Weichai Power, the world's largest manufacturer of diesel and electric engines, introduced a revolutionary diesel design with a thermal efficiency rating of 53.09%.
Most diesel motors in use today operate at 45-46% efficiency. Users of the new engines will see fuel and cost savings of about 14%. A typical truck operator, for example, will realize over $13,000 in cost savings annually.

This is actually very important for industrial production. It was 46% at max. China diesel engine was the first ever able to make diesel engine at 50%. 14% fuel saving and CO2 emission are a lot of fuel and CO2. China simply have the market, resources and patience to improve one step to break western monopoly.

@@jeremyheung6582That was what President Xi meant by common prosperity. If it only benefit only the top few, the money does reach and spread into the economy. Kindly allow me to share a joke. Two big men in a particular country were flying in a helicopter. One said it was my leadership that enable the country to develop. The other man replied it was not your leadership but my economic policies that brought the in the wealth. This leader added if I let a $100 note dropped to the ground, the person who picked it would be very happy. The economist retorted I would dropped one hundred $1 dollar note, I would make one hundred people happy. The helicopter pilot who was tired of their bragging said to himself quietly, "If I drop this 2 braggarts from the helicopter, everyone in the country would be happy." Joke aside. A country that gave 1 trillion tax break to the top one percent people in the country that didn't need the money unlike those in the bottom half of the country was not a good decision. More money would have spread into the economy if it has gone to more people who needed it.

The figures cited are for Carnot Efficiency (CE), the relatively simple formula for which is CE = 1 - (Tc/Th) where Tc is the “cold” temperature portion of the engine to which the heat from the Th “hot” temperature portion of the engine flows to perform useful work (in this case, propulsion). As you can see the goal from an engineering perspective is to make the fraction Tc/Th as small as possible. That is usually done by increasing the “hot” temperature Th in the denominator for the heat flow (useful work) of the combustion process as a whole. In power plants Carnot Efficiency is increased by running much higher temperatures and recycling heat down variable rate turbines. Those CE improvements always come at a cost of very expensive, high temperature, shorter-lived turbine alloys and/or more complex, heavier, and more expensive variable rate turbines and heat recovery mechanisms. I am willing to be persuaded, but I don’t know of any ways to dramatically increase CE without trade-offs inherent in the Laws of Physics. I believe the CE may have been increased from 45% to 53%, but at what cost? I look forward to another commenter more knowledgeable than I explaining this to me. Thanks.

Just read an article on F1 engine, notice petrol engine can reach 54% in theory. The F1 engine reach 49%. It has motor generator at exhaust manifold to capture the waste heat into electricity, also has one joint the crank shaft. One KWH lithium battery. The little 1.45 liter engine output 700 kilo watt power, my 2.0 liter Mazda CX-5 output 110.
@ZweiZwolf
@ZweiZwolf 16 күн бұрын
Yes, that F1 engine makes a lot of power, but what's the cost and maintenance compared to your Mazda engine? In a typical F1 car, the engine is something like $10 Million USD, where the engine in your CX-5 is less than $10k. Literally 1000x price increase for only 6x power increase. And you don't require a $100k mechanic to babysit it.

This is good, but probably not significant for trucking in China. China's national security plan is to shift from thermal power based on gas, petrol, diesel, crude, & coal to renewable energy sources. Over the same timeframe, China will save 100% of diesel fuel costs by switching to electric and/or hydrogen fuel cell systems - 7x more than what is possible with an efficiency improvement. China has the world's largest (and still rapidly growing) renewable power grid, so their trucks can use electricity generated by renewable solar & wind plants. China already has electric trucks with swappable batteries (they're HUGE) and produces more Green Hydrogen than the rest of the world combined. The transition to renewable electrified transport is inevitable and unstoppable. China freight km and passenger km will likely be over 90% electric transportation by 2035. The greater significance for the diesel engine efficiency improvement is for very large and/or ocean-going naval vessels such as bulk carriers and cruise ships which cannot be powered by electricity. The other major application is military vessels, such as diesel-electric submarines which typically operate in the oceans for months at a stretch.

The Atkinson cycle gasoline engines such as those used in Toyota Prius have 41-42% efficiency, I think. About 10 years ago VW had made a 2_cylinder turbo diesel hybrid that was getting I think 100mpg or some insane number . I don’t remember if it was a plug-in hybrid. It is possible to pair a very efficient ICE with plug-in hybrid technology and achieve great efficiency.

this is off topic but I am interested in your take on nuclear power development in China. they have started new reactors lately and have one SMR thorium molten salt reactor that went on line last year. not much info available on how it is doing. here is as vid from Copenhagen atomics on their thorium reactors. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fn7ZZpZpZ72Lpac do you have any info on the chinese development path here. when CN gets cheap electricity, and they must be pushing this hard with the amount of NEVs and Mag trains being deployed, they are suddenly going to be cranking out these reactors from assembly lines and make a sudden migration to electrification. would be very interested in you perspective here, tks
@ZweiZwolf
@ZweiZwolf 16 күн бұрын
China is pushing energy across the board. As I see China's nuclear plans: * 4th gen reactor is a single step improvement in safety, incorporating a full suite of passive safety making a Fukushima / Chernobyl failure almost impossible. This probably close to the endpoint for traditional Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) tech that scales poorly at limited sites. * Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) are for efficient scaling. That is, it's better to mass produce huge numbers of identical power plants to bring the per-unit cost down so it can compete globally. In theory, a SMR can be a "reactor in a box" that China loads onto a container ship, for inexpensive global export to BRI partners. * Thorium molten salt reactors (TMSR) are for desert use, where a traditional PWR is impossible due to lack of water. If China can drop a nuclear plant anywhere on earth, regardless of the climate, then that gives them a lot more flexibility in power generation, freeing up valuable coastal land for other use. As the technology matures, China will modularize the TMSR, possibly as a next-gen Thorium SMR to replace existing thermal (coal) plants and for global export.

This is nothing new. Such efficiencies in laboratories are pretty common and were achieved in Europe around 1960. The problem is that efficiency in heat engines depends on difference in temperatures. So Diesel engines that are more efficient are also much hotter. That fact in itself causes a lot of issues especially the durability of the engine is much lower. Higher engine temperatures means different kind and much more expensive lubricants more expensive engine block materials mean more expensive maintenance. There have always been struggles between efficiency and economy, very efficient engines were not the most economical.

WHEN China establishes a base on the moon first they will be the first to start manufacturing lol oh and those harder lighter metals and glass!!? means taller stronger lengthier infrastructure!!! buildings! heck bigger ships! bigger planes! stronger armour stronger bullets not that you will need bullets when you have also laser weapons and railguns! how will China get stuff to and from the moon!!??? hypersonic space plane launched by maglev slingshot!!! oh and dont be worried about jobs as well.... theyll be jobs in space for sure, maybe some people will be stationed on the moon and the expanded CSS!!
