This movie tore me up. My husband got a job in Vienna, Austria (we live in rural texas). Us and our two little kids practically sold/gave everything away. Literally the job fell through about 3 weeks before moving and it crushed us. Life seemed pretty blah after that because we put so much hope in the sparks and romance of Vienna. Our jobs that fell through would also have been more exciting than our hum drum jobs now. Watched this movie on a plane ride back from Germany about 2 years after it all fell through and I couldn’t control the tears and sobs. So basically, I felt it
@Mari-il4bw Жыл бұрын
Damn I’m sorry that happened to you. I think this movie hits so many people because most of us see ourselves doing something bigger and better with our lives but then we end up falling into a routine like getting a job we don’t like and returning to it day after day, it can be ordinary and bleak. However, I like to look at the positives. For example, my life may not be the most exciting but there’s so many simple things that give me pleasure like enjoying a good meal with my loved ones, discovering an amazing book, and seeing my cats when I get home from work everyday. You really do have to enjoy the little things.

You’re so right. My mom drifts to it several times a day, every day and have to do mental/emotional/spiritual gymnastics to deal with it. Practicing gratefulness is definitely a must, and literally saying’it could be worse’ can do wonders. Life is pretty darn good Thanks for your reminder

@@kellyrhoads1067 also keep in mind it's ok to moarn what could have been, because it will always find a way to creep back in. Don’t worry, I will solve your problem. I worked in Vienna. It’s far better where you are, I have been to both where you are and Vienna. Vienna is good to live in for the most about 2 months. After that, it has very little to do, can seem very lonely there even if you are with family and people, its mostly grey skies and has a tax rate of 40% if you are above average wage. You can mourn what you thought it would be but don’t fall into the trap of feeling it would have been better than your life now in the US. It may not necessarily be so xx Just an affectionate message to you to help you heal xx

Thanks for trying. Appreciate the thought. But I lived in Vienna for 5 1/2 years. Gave birth to my daughter there. Still think it's better. Going back in 2 days and again will check for job opportunities . I made great Viennese friends, by taking my dog to the dog park

To them it initially was. Frank and April both believed it would magically transform their lives until Frank started taking risks in his job which paid him off well and he got a promotion. He probably understood that he just needed to change his approach and he could have the same kind of money and luxury where he was instead of moving to Paris. April, on the other hand, had nothing to look forward to, with or without the extra money. Her life was bland and full of domestic duties which she felt would change in Paris (since she would get a job first not Frank). Which is why when Frank wanted to drop that idea, she didn't agree with him. April was so in love with the idea of going to Paris that she couldn't see any difference, even with the extra money Frank's promotion would bring, in their lives. When she got pregnant, she felt it was another shackle to hold her back in her boring life and ot would give Frank a (valid) reason to cancel all plans to move. Perhaps she was afraid losing face in front of Shep and his wife after boasting. Perhaps it was their argument with their landlord's son (or friend, dont remember the name) who was mentally ill but who insulted them for "chickening out". Whatever it was, Frank felt he could cut himself free from the toxicity but April kept feeling more and more trapped. She was feeling the leash tighten and every occurrence was another blow to her dream and self-esteem, in her eyes. By the end of the movie, moving to Paris was still a big deal for April since it wasn't about the money or her family's happiness but more about herself and wanting to get out of a pseudo trap she saw around her.

@@m22d889 Thank you for this excellent observation. The novel/film is not about a move to Paris, it's about two people in a relatively long marriage who aren't happy with themselves or each other. Frank never wanted Paris - you can see it in his face throughout the film. Paris was April's last ditch effort to be free of her emotional baggage, as unrealistic as that is.
