Conventional thinking is that if your knee is the problem (tendonitis, arthritis, etc), you address the knee directly with various modalities (tissue massage, stretching, strengthening) to improve your symptoms around the knee. A more holistic and systematic approach would be that you recognize knee is a part of the whole, and you improve a relationship between knee and the other parts. This would mean that you will change your habitual movement patterns around your knee, and this would also mean changing your brain/nervous system through movement retraining. This applies to any other parts of your body and any conditions because all your body parts are connected. As I always say, everything is connected! Changing your nervous system means changing what's normal based on your beliefs and current knowledge. Possibilities are endless. It's a matter of learning how to retrain your nervous system and movement patterns! Do you want to change how you feel in your body? Let's retrain your movement patterns together!

@@hrvojehorvat4298 you're very welcome:) From a neurological development perspective, we develop functions of hands, arms together with functions of torso, head, legs as we learn to reach, grab, push, pull, hold, crawl, etc. So looking from this perspective, you can retrain very fundamental movement patterns (rolling, reaching, crawling, etc) in order to improve functions of whole together.

@@hrvojehorvat4298 I suggest you check my playlists. You can start with the one that interests you the most. I personally like "Follow alongs" playlist where I guide people through integrated movement practice. Hip mobility follow alongs would be wonderful.

Here's an important thing to know. Everything is connected. There's no "fixing" of your knee without improving a relationship between knee and others, the whole relationship, interconnectedness. You're improving a relationship with your body, YOU through nervous system and movement retraining! Enjoy!

This is great. I have no knee pain, but brain injuries which affect my movements. I had to do it on my bed because I don't do well on the floor. I found that I am really stiff with limited range of motion. I did both sides. It did activate something. I am confident that if I keep doing this it will help a lot. Thank you Taro ~ Marilyn

Hi Taro. I think my arms or shoulders are weak. It is hard to hold the position that way. Will I get the same benefit if I am laying flat and still moving my feet around staying in contact? I wanted to do this several times a day. I can do it once with the sitting position but that is all. I've been doing it laying down the other times. Just didn't want to use energy if it is futile. Thanks Taro. This movement has helped me to be conscious of my feet on the ground and its movement was a little with halts not smooth. Well, i will probably with practice retrain the entire body and the nervous system. I am getting pricks and needles in my feet often. I am doing the exercises whatever i can, atleast it is not getting bad. Thanks once again Taro for all the guidance.

Thank you very much Tarot. I have good hip flexibility and while there’s no pain, my left knee has started kicking whenever I’m coming down the stairs. I will give this routine a go and let you know if it helps. Arigatō🙏

I have tons of videos on that topic on my channel "Improve Neck" playlist. A theme of my teaching is about nervous system, movement retraining to improve the whole relationship, connection. A key to improve parts is to integrate with all other parts. You can go through my neck series which I posted a few months ago.

Idk taro I think that you do offer quick fixes. Except they work! Today I felt my back diaphragm descend for the first time ever! It’s been stuck folded up around my lower ribs! So it’s also a long game too. If you have any recommendations to get the diaphragm more unstuck that would be amazing. Its caused problems that go beyond pain that I won’t go into here but I felt an improvement and can tell they’re connected. ❤

It's amazing. Feels like I'm recalibrating how I move the many parts of my legs to be more efficient! Feldenkrais really does wonders with the body and mind!

Thank you taro! I have a mysterious limitation. In all drills where I need to sit on my sitbones, I cannot put my feet flat on the ground -- they just lift up and only the back of my heels touches the ground. How can I improve this? I guess it is a pelvic limitation but I am not sure. Thank you brother!

I will give you the "answer", but before I do, may I ask why you think you "should" keep your back straight? We are so used to do things in a certain way without even knowing why, so I like asking people "why". Why do people feel/think they should engage core? Why do people feel/think they should keep their back straight? Why do people feel/think they should stretch? etc.

@@TaroIwamoto ok, Taro, I get your point. Just let the body go with the flow so I can explore new benefits of not trying to control everything, even my life. Let the Universe be the Universe. My lesson that i should focus in this exercise is to keep the sole of the foot touching flat the floor. Yes, that is the only thing I should ...control. Then feel how the rest of the body flow and enjoy. Haha. Correct?

@@ThuLe-eh1xe there's nothing wrong with keeping your back straight as long as you know your intention clearly. For example, you use this movement with your clear intetion of learning to differentiate and isolate hip movements from your spine, and you intentionally keep your spine still so you can sense movements of hip clearly. That's great. Many people have a habit of doing exercises without knowing their intetion clearly, so exercises become mechanical movements. As Moshe Feldenkrais said, "If you know what you are doing, you can do what you want."

@@ThuLe-eh1xe my pleasure:) I believe its important to be intentional, know your intention for your action, move intentionally. So you have a good intention to keep your back straight while doing this movement lesson, i think thats great! Of course, I have a very specific intention fr this movement lesson, that is to help people understand connection between lower leg, knee, hip, torso and help them find a clearer connection so they can reduce stress to their knees and improve functions. For this specific intention, you can experiment different options. One where you keep your back straight, disallow your torso to move with yout hip and lower leg, Second option where you allow your torso to move with your hip and lower leg. See how two options affect your body, quality of movement, breathing, effects on your knee. Then, based on your own sensations and experience, you can decide which option serves you better for that specific intention. You see which option is better depends on what you try to accomplish, so it depends on your intention. If you dont know your intention, a question of what is good, how you should move becomes very vague. Hope this helps.

If your doctor has given you specific instructions as to what to do, what to avoid, please follow. If you're okay to go through light movements, improving your movement patterns to improve your knee functions during your healing period would be wonderful!

Hi Taroo. Thank you for the vido and the previous ones. The pervious video about the knee was clear for me. I felt the transmission of the movement from the heal up and by the end of the session the whole body feel well. However I am confused about today's video! Where my attention should gi? I kept the foot toching the floor but didi not get your point about the coordination and the relerning. Nerw pattern & nervous system. Would you please direct me to articles or books about that! Thanks for your senceer work.

What appears to be random movements that have little to do with knee, these movements give you the opportunity to improve coordination of ankle-knee-hip-torso. Knee's functions are largely determined by its interaction with others as it's directly influenced by the joints above (hips) and below (ankles). If lower legs and upper legs don't interact/coordinate well together, what's being most affected is knee. If there's habitual holding in your hips, trunk as moving your lower legs, your knee is affected negatively. So to ensure your knee is not stressed, you need to allow your hips and torso to respond and move with lower leg. Then you know movement/force is transmitting through your knee, to hips and torso, not stopping at your knee (stress).
