I'm so friggin excited for this game! It looks so cool and I /love/ the philosophy of making movement so fun you wanna spend time just going all over the place. It's part of the reason why Gravity Rush is my favorite game series ever, I've spent hours enjoying the smooth, fun movement available in that series, long after I beat the game. "I can do all these cool weapon art movements but then when it comes to climbing a rock... it doesn't make sense" glad to see I'm not the only one. I really like the philosophy behind figuring out what you like about the game and how to distinguish it (Dark Souls combat is fun? Take that. Add a twist, mounted combat. Already done? Well, the focus was a new mobility thing, so focus more on that, because you like good movement mechanics, so why not focus on that?) And then, with the core behind what you want from it in mind, you can design around it. It makes a lot of sense to me, so yeah, nice design philosophy / method

I was a big fan of Worlds Adrift and this grappling hook system looks amazing, one small thing that WA did that i would advise was a shift to shorten the grapple length and control to lengthen the grapple to change position and speed, shortening to add speed and lengthening to slow down, with spacebar as a boost for last minute height and a little extra boost. Can't wait for the game, already wishlisted!

Thank you! I do have inputs for reeling (shortening and sending you towards the attach point) and boosting (shooting you forward in the direction you are looking) which gives tight control. I don't have a lengthen one as just falling and regrappling sort of acts in a similar way but something that could be considered after the demo if there would be a bonus use for it and available input

came from the creature IK animation video and I've been catching up with your devlogs, the grappling movement system looks absolutely incredible! I like the little sine-wave S shape the golden grapple line makes when grabbing onto things as well, it reminds me of Hornet's thread attack from Hollow Knight, very satisfying and stylish :) Someone else mentioned weighty weapons in the comments, I agree! I imagined using the speed and momentum of your grapple-swing and careful timing to influence how much damage your weapon swing does. Like a wrecking ball! Like in elden ring, holding down the heavy-attack button while on horseback lets you drag your sword on the ground and do a little damage to enemies you touch. But when you let go of the button there's a little delay before you swing your sword and do a heavy attack. It rewards timing your weapon swing perfectly while charging at an enemy, but also offers a nice safety net of "at least you'll still do SOME damage". That, but while swinging around on a grapple with a damage boost depending on your speed might be really fun :D Or holding down a button while grappling towards a big monster to drag a sword or bladed weapon across it while you pass, which will do more damage the longer you hold the button down, and will also do more damage the faster you're moving. But as a tradeoff, the longer you hold the button down the more momentum you lose, the less damage you'll do over time, and it may make it hard to get away if you get greedy and try to do too much damage at once! There's so much possibility here, really excited to see what you do with this combat system but hope those ideas are useful :D

The movement system looks extremely promising!! Grappling hooks is one of my most favorite mechanics ever. I can't think of a game that's made worse with it. Especially when synergized with the rest of the gameplay. I love action games, so I'm looking forward to seeing what the skill ceiling will be and how stylish the combat could be!

This is so cool to see man. I have a VERY similar core gameplay loop in mind for the game I'm making in Dreams with a grappling hook used for scaling big monsters and a prosthetic arm that transforms into different tools used for scaling them. I'd love to compare notes sometime. I am 100% on the same page with you about these design principles. I've got Withersworn wishlisted and cannot wait for it to come out. Keep up the good work! I'll be following this. Would be cool to have momentum included in the melee attacks so if you do a big grapple speed wind up the attack would be higher damage. A skilled player could transfer all momentum to the enemy if timed right but have the possibility to die if they miss and crash into the ground or wall. Have you considered a gliding system with the cape? spiderman, just cause, and a smaller game called last oasis have very good mechanics. Another point for inspiration might be genos from one punch with how he generated force with movement and propulsion.

im so excited!! this looks amazing and so innovative, the designs of the withersworn and the lore really intrigue me you probably already thought of this but i feel like momentum should be preserved more like when you dive down land and roll you should be able to just keep running and get back to high ground more games i think might be worth looking at for inspiration would be titanfall 2, dying light 2, praey for the gods, bomb rush cyberfunk and crumble

Firstly, I want to say that, like many others watching the video, I'm incredibly excited to watch this game evolve over time and become the best that it can be! Secondly, I'm sure you've already considered and determined what kind of melee weapons you want to add to the game. I want to toss my hat in just to give my thoughts on what I would want in a game like this, and what I hope a lot of people would want. Put simply, I want melee weapons to have WEIGHT to them. I don't just want something that rewards speed, I want to feel all that momentum come to a head with one incredible, explosive strike. For me, my mind goes to the weapons from Monster Hunter, particularly the great sword and hammer. Being able to use the sheer weight of those weapons to deliver an incredible blow is probably one of the most satisfying things in video games. Genuinely, I really wish the best for you and this game. I don't want to just give advice and be like "do this or I hate it". I would buy the game now if I could. Already what you've said in this video gives me great hope. And I know you probably aren't looking for anyone else, but if there's any way I could help make this project a reality, I would love to offer my (admittedly limited) services. Keep up the awesome work man! And may the bugs be ever in your favor!

For sure, I've played every Monster Hunter game and love the weapons so should be able to deliver on that desire. It will have a similar set up with a handful of weapons that each have a distinct playstyle.

Okay legit saw a clip of this on twitter and im now all in this project looks RAD AF and im super hyped. that being said if your still on the lookout for more inspiration might i recommend looking into a game called Spark the electric jester 3. you might be able to get some momentum or level desgin ideas from that one. as for combat the best i got is actually not a game itself but looking at style videos for games like devil may cry or even speedruns for games like mario oddessy. even the best games tend to have a major separation between combat and movement so you defiantly have way more of a challenge ahead of you then even I can fathom. though one game does come to mind. a long time ago when attack on titan was first airing there was a chibi fan game that came out and it seems to be unfinished but it did have really good swinging and some just okay melee combat you can still find the game if you look up "chibi attack on titan fan game" Hope something in here was able to give you something to work with and even if it doesn't hay I'm super hyped for this project and ill be following it as best i can.

a good fit for leveling up would be collecting orb drops from enemies. something other wordly and mysterious that you can exchange somewhere for upgrades.

I think this is a great ability, but i think it might be good to take the potential world into consideration. An example would be that if you make a really large world with varying biomes then the grapples might not work as well as the open space you have in the demo, but you could turn this into something that changes the dynamic of the game. An example might be a ice biome with really enclosed spaces that doesnt allow for fast travel swings, but where there is ice that you can break that slides down, allowing for a moving grapple point, or a forest where you cant gain speed in dense vegetation, but if you see a open trail you can gain momentum in exchange for maybe being an easy target. I think Titanfall 2 does this incredibly well but its not purely because of the movement system, but rather that you need to adapt your playstyle to gain the best results. Only grappling might not be a good idea against a sniper while doing a cloaked stealth dash is and so on. The grapple would also make for some really cool "weak point" strats against the dynamic enemies where you have to change your playstyle on the fly. Another really interesting aspect of the movement would be "increased damaged the higher the speed" where if you can angle and speed up you might get a oh-so-satisfying hard hit

Project has tonnes of potential - I think some kind of bullet time mechanic coupled with the ranged combat would help for targeting weakspots with the more fluid movement system - add some chunky feedback and you’ll have devolver digital in your DM’s in no time 😂
