The problem with going into redline with a diesel is that it has zero torque after 4200 RPM. You can actually hear when you reach that point, as the engine stops going "VRRRROOOOOO" and starts going "MOOOOOO". It's because of the diesel being auto-ignition. The combustion can only be sustained as long as the piston doesn't exceed a certain speed. Shift it at 4500 or sooner, a diesel is not a gasser.
@PepegaPig9 жыл бұрын
+Gordon Freeman I generally agree with you. :) Although something to note it depends entirely on the given car/engine/hardware/tune. My car makes peak BHP at 4200rpm and holds it flat till 5000 :-) (same base Common rail VW engine as this)
@hunghuge77179 жыл бұрын
+Gordon Freeman Hasn't been the case in a lot of diesels for quite a long time. BMW, Merc, VW/etc all learned ages ago how to make diesels rev right upto where the fuel stops burning. Usually 5000-5200 is the new cut off and that's because they build soft limiters into the software to save engine damage after that. Look up piezo injectors in a common rail and you'll see just how flexible the new fuel delivery systems are.

Thomas Lee SUVs are a major American thing, however you pointed out something important, the crossovers. You were talking about the temparaturegauge not making a fuss. Did you know that a VAG tempneedle will show 90°C (190°F) from 70-110°C (160-230°F)?
@BlahBleeBlahBlah9 жыл бұрын
It sucks, in a lot of modern cars the "temperature gauge" has become a glorified idiot light... People got concerned when the temperature gauge would fluctuate (as coolant temp fluctuates normally). So in most modern cars they just set it to dead centre over a wide temperature range... So by the time the car indicates hot on the gauge it's well and truly hot!
@TheSmokingTire9 жыл бұрын
I did not know that. And that is the dumbest thing on earth. Why even put a gauge if it's not accurate?
@YZJB9 жыл бұрын
+TheSmokingTire it's designed so that people who have no idea about cars don't freak out if it's a millimetre left or right of 90 degrees C.
@originaslpyderxta9 жыл бұрын
+TheSmokingTire Same reason the Miata had the oil pressure gauge replaced by an idiot gauge in 94. Too many people came in saying their oil pressure fluctuates. I mean, they arent wrong, my oil pressure gauge will go from 30psi at idle all the way past 60psi when really getting on it or when its cold. This is nothing new though. My 2003 Focus SVT was the same way. There were 2 temp readings. One coolant reading at the t-stat housing which was really a switch for the fan. Another that was a probe in one end of the cylinder head that was connected to the dash but it was also buffered so it would not fluxtuate. It would sit smack in the middle as long as the car was running fine and there were no numbers on it. However the SVT got 2 aux gauges fro oil pressure and oil temp that were real gauges. In contrast my 1990 Chevy Suburban has a real gauge with number on it and you can watch the t-stat open and the temp drop. It cycles between 150F to about 190F.
@Sj1bby9 жыл бұрын
+TheSmokingTire It's designed so that people who don't know about cars, won't come and wine about any fluctuation. I'm guessing VAG thinks that a coolant temp of 70°C/160°F is an okay temp to beat on a car. No offence but, you might be a good example here: you tell the viewers VAG has a good reputation with not runing warm or cold a bit when pusing te car. Is a good repuation, not exactly wat you would want wen you manufacture cars? .. I'm guessing here, but me thinks loads of carbuilders do this...

Matt, when you say the tune is a win/win, does it really mean that MPGs aren't affected? Surely it either brings them down or emissions up. (Honestly neither of those things would prevent me from getting it, though.)
@TheSmokingTire9 жыл бұрын
+Willy Lamb-Orgel Most off-the-shelf tunes do not really affect MPG unless you're driving the car hard. If you're trying to get the most performance out of it, it will surely use more fuel than the standard tune. If you're just cruising on the highway, the tune's parameters are not that far from stock so MPG shouldn't be affected. In our Fiesta ST, highway fuel economy is not changed from stock, even though the car makes 50% more power than stock.
@rfouR_49 жыл бұрын
+TheSmokingTire I do in the Fiesta ST. I use COBB's the fly switchable tune to go into that economy tune on the highway to equal it out though, and flip back when I need the power. Otherwise I notice a few MPG loss. Conversely if I stick it in cruise control and go 65 with the economy tune, I've average over 40MPG. xD

Regarding reving the diesel to redline, to go fast as possible shift into the next gear when the engine produces more power in the next gear then in the current. with the performancechart and the gear ratios it is possible to calucate the rev's when to shift into next gear. Normally you feel the powerloss at high rpm in a diesel But maybe the tune keeps the power up to redline.
@dbauernf9 жыл бұрын
I was just about to say that you're probably overreving it just by listening to the sound in the first minute when you mentioned it. A lot of diesels start to loose power at 3500 already and can be down by 10% or more by redline so.. might not be an opinion but something actually measurable.

i love it when you say "use the torque of the diesel" and you are trashing it to the redline...The higher the rpm the acceleration is slower on diesel,because max torque is at around 1500-1800 rpm and max power is at 3500-4000rpm(depending on the engine)...No need to rev past that(like you do,to 5000) and there's no need to downshift to 5000 when you can keep it in higher gear...You drive too many petrol cars,diesels can be fun too!
@TheSmokingTire9 жыл бұрын
+Lazar Janjusevic Yes, but this is a manual gearbox car, and so the shift times come into account. If you can rev the engine to redline in between corners to avoid making two shifts (one up, one back down), the net will be in your favor. Furthermore, if you drive an automatic or dual-clutch diesel, put it in automatic, and floor the accelerator pedal, it will shift at redline, not at 4,000 RPM, leading me to believe the engineers who designed the car are of the opinion that the fastest way to accelerate a diesel car is to shift at redline. If someone can show me proof otherwise, I'd be happy to hear it. But I would love to see a drag race between two diesel cars where one car is run to redline and the other is short shifted at 3500. I'd bet the redline shifted car wins the race.
@giomartini9 жыл бұрын

You don't agree with the idea of up shifting early, and yet you're a gear higher than the petrol? :/ Also, look at the dyno graph, and you'll see that revving it out is an absolute waste of revs, speed, and time.
@TheSmokingTire9 жыл бұрын
+BigCarKilla I'm a gear higher than the gas car, yes, but I still don't like upshifting before redline when I'm on the straightaway. The car doesn't pull as hard above 4500 as it does below it, but the last 500 RPM are still worth using if you're trying to go as fast as possible. The time and momentum lost with two extra shifts isn't worth it to me when there are still revs left in the gear.
@BigCarKilla9 жыл бұрын
+TheSmokingTire Matt, after looking at the power curve of this tune, I really am going to stand firm on this - as from 4,300rpm the power drops like a cliff. You'd be pushing to redline for no reason, and slowing your progress. If you get the car again, do a 1/4 mile time shifting at 4,500 and again at 5,000 - you will see an advantage. The amount of torque and power you lose in those last few revs is massive, this isn't a gas car, the drop off isn't progressive so there isn't a reason to whip a dead horse. While up shifting earlier places you back in the meat of things and gets you progressing faster.

with the golf 7 2.0 tdi, you just waste time after 4200-4500

I would stay away from those affected cars period. VW has tarnished its reputation and I'm sure it's hurt the resale value. Once they "fix" the car it will be less desirable. Throwing in a tune effectively voids your warranty. I'd rather buy something more fun out of the box. You can't go wrong with the ST twins. Great performance and superb value. I know, I've owned both.

Those who buy tdis are for the most part either: looking for the high mpg (close to 50) or vw enthusiasts or both. The same person buying a focus st will not think "let me try the golf tdi instead, I bet it'll be more fun and faster". It's two different markets. Therefore your comment is irrelevant sir.

+Reginald R yeah 50 mpg and a huge boot/lots of backseat room. It would just be a positive that its 190+ hp and manual for a car guy.

+Reginald R not true. I've cross shopped a tdi golf manual and a focus st.

There's a reason it feels lighter on ts feet. Easy to tune when you have no emissions controls :p (sorry, I had to!)

25hp are a poor upgrade, they do around 200hp to the crank on stock hardware, and 430-450nm. 184/190 versions we can get in EU gets 230-240hp and 370-380ibft when they are maxed out.

Sportwagen? Seriously? :D This doesn't make any sense

+Mathias Braun Oh man, do you have things to learn. No offense as I understand that its not everyone's cup of tea but the modern day wagon is no woody. (Check out the C7 RS6) but its got the name because it shares the same plat as the Golf just extended body for utiliterian purposes. Its actualy sporty.

TheSigp220 Whatever. I'm German and "Sportwagen" is the term for sth like Porsche, Ferrari etc. I guess in Germany this would be the Golf Variant R-Line TDI
@TheSigp2209 жыл бұрын
Oh, I see what you're saying now. My buddy had a MK3 Variant VR6 and it was awesome. What Model Porsche and Ferrari do you guys get badged Sportwagon over there? I lived in Germany from 1992-1995 and its a diffrent world these days.
@TheSkilfingar9 жыл бұрын
TheSigp220 I only took Porsche and Ferrari as an example to explain the meaning of "Sportwagen". ;)
@Noise-Bomb9 жыл бұрын
+TheSigp220 in Germany Sportwagen is like the English sports car so things like 911's Ferrari's or things like that. Sa for us Germans this term makes no sense especially when it comes from a German car manufacturer
