Our next step is to make the developers force the strictest standards upon localizers. No more subversions.
@TehFlashBang_7 ай бұрын
To play devils advocate, even if you’re not trying to subvert the original meaning with your translation, localizing Japanese text is really really difficult. I’ve been learning Japanese for a while now and a lot of times I’ll read or hear something in Japanese and have a very defined idea of what is being said, but translating it to English in a way that sounds natural (not for the culture, but for the language itself) is not an easy thing to do. Localizers should definitely be held to stricter standards, and should keep the original meaning and feel of what they’re translating, but being too strict might be an overcorrection.
@sum111117 ай бұрын
@@TehFlashBang_ I concur, there is usually a way to get across the gist of what is being said, but translating to a literal degree is often impossible or just a bad idea. Also, the best translations are usually a result of taking certain liberties when appropriate to produce more natural sounding English, take Nintendo games for example. The liberties taken by the translators that end up in these videos are on whole other planet and usually have absolutely nothing to do with the original intent of the passage, shoehorning in shortlived pop culture elements like amongus memes or political soapboxing like the infamous Dragon Maid example. Transgressions of this type are only done deliberately or by somebody who doesn't at all understand the fundamental tenets of translation, and "strict standards" would even be overkill to get rid of them. It simply requires somebody who has the intention of preserving the original tone and meaning as best as possible while producing comfortable English.
@ErdeZ7 ай бұрын
@@TehFlashBang_ If you can't translate the meaning accurately, you need to translate the intent. That's how proper localization is done. Or like we did in the old days, have a translator's note in anime explaining it in more detail. Regards, ex-fansubber.

Blue Archive is very easy to get into. The game is extremely generous with currency, has great pull rates, a guaranteed pity system that lets you redeem the character of your choice after 200 pulls, and has basically no grind at the beginning. It's actually the late game grind where it gets grindy, but even then it's manageable. Also the characters are the best I've seen in any gacha. There's a reason Blue Archive is consistently #1 at Comiket - it's because the characters are so endearing and have unique and interesting personalities. So much so that you can easily imagine them in various scenarios and how they'd act in such circumstances, hence their popularity in dōjin short manga. The game gives a level of focus to the characters that is unparalleled among gacha games, such that it's very easy to get invested in the characters. The relationship stories are the primary reason I get characters, as opposed to most gachas where I only see them as stat dumps. Lots of characters in this game have community memes that are an extension of aspects of their character. The story is somewhat cliche and a typical story of hope, trust, and friendship; but it pulls it off amazingly purely because the amazingly fleshed out characters get you to genuinely care about their predicaments. The art style is... just look at it. If a Mirror's Edge style city, soft and bright shading, and Azure skies speaks to you... it's great. And the music is easily my favorite soundtrack in all of gaming, and that's coming from someone who plays A LOT of JRPGs with banger soundtracks. It's a heavy electronic soundtrack that is mostly Kawaii Future Bass but has other electronic subgenres thrown in, and the handful of sombre piano tracks really bring it all together. 10/10 game would recommend. When you play this game you really understand why it's so popular in JP.
@OM3GA-Z3RO7 ай бұрын
@@McCaroni_Sup Most of what you said may sound like an unbiased opinion of the game which I will take it to heart, GBF also has a pity system and even a milestone system (At 200 pulls for example, you get a guaranteed SSR ticket and at 300 pulls you can choose any character you want) and when you pull the current new released character you get bonus Mastery Points and Mastery Items to pump into the new character. Late grind being the actual grind sounds very similar to GBF as well which that seems to be a plus for me. When I play a game I usually listen out for the music and in GBF and Limbus Company (The other Gacha I play, very good) their music is very enjoyable so I hope what you say about the music being good is true because if the music catches my vibe then I will be hooked in the game. Thanks for taking the time to commenting your thoughts on this game, you've convinced me to try and I hope I will get as comfortable in the community as the rest that are having fun in the game.

It's moderate, easy to get into but takes a while to max level and maybe the community is needed to better understand what stats do what.... not that it matters if you're into the characters, since story mode is essentially a pain free visual novel with almost no requirements to level up your students (except for the weird difficulty spike at the end of Volume 3 that requires you to at least have 4 strikers and 2 specials at lvl 45, but it's the only one)

Aside from the cute and funny and very interesting anime girls, beautiful art direction, banger soundtrack (literally the best game OST of all time imo), and great story - the emphasis the game's story has on the value of being able to live your life and pursue your ambitions without undue interference from higher powers is a big part of what made me fall in love with this game as a libertarian. Okay, I got nervous for a minute there because I was looking forward to the new banner. Yeah, ever notice how this stuff either never happens or never sticks with cash cows like gacha games and MMOs? They know. They know this doesn't make money. They can make a ton of ESG money on an individual game that some people are still gonna buy, but games with a steady stream of income? Nah, not happening, they're not risking that.

Hey Rev I think you should also cover about Fgo recent localization cuz they sneakily add the word “non binary” on the game which has no relation on any of the fate franchise or the original Jp wordings of the game you can check one of the fgo ad from Aniplex EN channel shows the scene where the word occurs not much people voiced this concern to enforce the EN localizers to fix it which sucks

Weirdest part about this was people tryna say "this is not the kinda game where you sexualize the girls!" and thing about that is you can tell they never actually read any of the story or paid attention to the student's voicelines towards Sensei in Blue Archive. Played this game for an hour before never touching it again but that hour was all I needed to be able to tell what this game was about. This is a game very much directed at those into the student x teacher trope. That is like... its entire core. If people dont like it, they should find a game meant for their tastes rather then try and change another's.

Meanwhile in FGO we got the localized new event saying things that if a servant was non binary while from what I found online was a moment of confusion since the servant in question was a man while alive but was summoned as female, right shocking in Fate I know however there was a good explanation about it. Now I am worried about future translations.
@saviletotorres1437 ай бұрын
I wouldn't feel too worried. From what I read in some comments, the translation itself was not bad, the complaint is that they used non-binary. I know there is a word for it in Japanese, so maybe that's why they translated it that way. The rest of the event hasn't had anything bad so I think everything is fine

The original line wasn't even that bad to be honest. Even if you want to make the argument that it has suggestive connotations, its still not that explicit. 100% certain the localizer just knew it would give their male playerbase joy and wanted to deny it even at the expense of everyone else as well.
@Dorian_Scott7 ай бұрын
Yeah, it was. The original Korean line implies that Kikyou wants to feel romantically close to Sensei. But the initial English translation made her come off as somewhat colder than what was originally intended. There's a difference between _"I want to be close to you"_ and _"Please stay within my sight."_
