I had a friend in high school and his dad used to restore old cars and one of my favorite cars he did was a Edsel it was gorgeous. It was white with red leather interior & it was beautiful when he finally finished. Took him a long time. He did a rotisserie restoration on everything the engine the frame body it looked better than the day it was brand new. He did museum quality restorations on cars

I had a 58 Edsel Ranger 2 door with a v8 and a 58 Edsel 2 door wagon years ago. Last year I sold a great running 59 Edsel 2 door Pacer with that six cylinder. Then I bought a 59 Edsel 4 door wagon with the 361v8. Got it running this summer. All of the old Ford rigs have that style starter and they all get their door latching internals gummed up so the don’t work. Gotta remove the door panels to get at it to clean and lube up. Good luck with that. I’ve got a 58 Ford retractable hard top and a 58 Ford wagon plus 11 Thunderbirds, 1956~2003. Come on up here to Alaska and buy em!

Edsels were made for 3 years 58, 59, 60, and were built on the Ford assembly line right along side the Ford cars which shared the same bodies as the Edsels which had different front clips and tail ends and trim and engines. This caused the guys working on the assembly line to outright hate the Edsels and many Edsels were sabotaged by the ones putting them together. Edsel was Henry Fords only son. Edsel named his son Henry Ford II and this was who wanted the car to be named Edsel in honor of his father who was a truly amazing car designer

The Edsel didn't use a lot of Ford parts, it WAS a Ford. Edsel was Henry's son. The V8 engines were the only "new" thing they came up with. The "FE" block engines were the Ford, Edsel. A block design they came up with for the Edsel. Later became famous as the 352 and later, much more famous as the 390. That 6 was likely the exact same engine my dad had in his Ford wagon.

good job, wonderful. All old cars deserve to be saved. My best cars were a dodge monaco 1967 et an eldorado 1979. they are the america that i love. long life to it. To fight rust efficently, you can put grease everywhere : between carpet and metal, inside doors, trunk door, rear wings... when you cannot reach the hidden parts with paintbrush you can pour oil with an extender - to be repeated every year for oil, for grease every five years congratulations from france.

Which I now have in my possession. He also love the 58 Mercury which he also had but unfortunately he wrecked it, (at night) comn home one night from work, he struck 2 cows in the middle of the road, 🥺🤯😵😱😭😭, no more car. Smash, no more car and no more cows. My grandmother hit a cow once with her car. And once she some how jumped the ditch and ended up in a cow field. Someone with her asked her 'how are we going to get back on the road' and she said 'same way we go into the field'. She floored that car and rejumped the ditch and landed back in the road. This grandmother was a real character - she drove for years with no license, but the local judge finally made her get one. Oh and this was all in North Carolina, where the ditches along the roads are like 1 to 2 feet wide and like 2 feet deep.

Hello Rev David & Ole Man. I just love those Inline 6 engines. Sounds like the piston rings may have been sticking causing low compression. That engine will probably run better and better the more that it’s ran. On A Historical Thought; Just imagine that the Edsel was brand new when Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens & Big Bopper lost their lives in the tragic plane crash near Clear Lake Iowa on February 3,1959. I am kind of curious what the specific manufacture date is on this Edsel. I’m so glad that both of you got the Edsel back up and running again.

Excellent video Rev :) , Old Man :) that cool 1959 Edsel Ranger car in 4 door plus surprises me got 6 cylinders, Automatic transmission on steering wheel column also would change that green acid cable too and change oil too why saw pull dipstick out got some water why drips like that! Plus not first one seen in those cars I know guy has but V8 motor also has push button Automatic transmission on left side dash and 4 speed with Overdrive button and update brake booster with fluid resivor 1978 year plus wheels to disk front and back drums and axle change too! Also 12 Volt Negative ground with Alternator too because Generator gave up also steering change plus suspension too also much more! Car is black and white too for body plus interior too! You guys nickname this car Flapper Spedo on Flapping driver's door and trunk too also gets up going speed! Need Wd 40 door locks and jams too help work right ! Nice see a 49 year car lives on too! Think gap on the Distributor points wild remember the 1968 McCormick International 105C combine gas motor had 1 cm gap on points Rev , Old Man why is because 4 cylinder motor had Champions spark that had size threads heads of Pop bottles buy today also gap at 0.45 foul and head sockets were 13/16 not kidding you motor size was 202 Cubic Cm ! Horsepower was 105 with 130 torque and carb was 1 barrel carb Zenith with hand choke cable knob! Great motor and plus quick start ups and quiet motor ever heard! 12:12 I had pulled a car or truck many miles with a car dolly years ago. They work well until you have to back up a long way or pull a car in the rain taking a corner to fast. Things get squirrely. 14:55 The only thing you had to do is put the car in park and back your truck up. The dolly would have rolled right under the car with tires in place on dolly. The same way getting it off. Put the car in park, loosen straps and take your truck and pull dolly a way from under car.

A lot of times you can take a standard shift car that has not ran in a very long time and you can pull it with the transmission in gear for several miles. That will a lot of times work the rust off the valve seats and build compression and heat in the cylinders. Saves lots of wear and tear on batteries and starters lol . An old WWII mechanic told me about that.

And the more you run it with good oil the better the compression gets.

I would also recommend replacing the ballast resistor. Its under the hood and is a cheap part to replace.

We had s 58 Villager wagon when I was a kid. It actually was a great car but ya,the technology was ahead of its time...which I think scared buyers off. Especially the pushbutton automatics.

Got the same car, year, color, 223 engine and 3 on the tree down on the lot. Few years back a tree fell on it and flattened the roof and entire back end. It had been sitting 50 years in the damp anyhow, pretty rusty. That six was one of Fords best engines, you want to upgrade to the FE V8 I have a '58 Edsel E400 ( 361) engine core waiting for someone to rebuild it.

36:18 I would pull the starter apart & clean it all together & were I stoped the video. In our 61 Ranchero 170 I ground new lines in the core cleaned the brushes with help put it back together brushes apart 😀 & it started cranking real good it wasn't that bad of a job to do

I don't think the Edsel was or is an ugly car. I hope the Ole Man enjoys her. He and I graduated the same year, 1973!

I love the interiors of those old Edsel's I don't care what anyone says about them even the styling was unique for a Ford at that time. Too bad Edsel Fords brainchild never caught on. You showed the engine turned over by hand fairly easily I just wonder if the compression on that engine is low for the reason it took so long to get it to run. The Ole man looks like Robert Mitchem in the movie "Thunder Road."

A couple tips for ya. Put a pipe over the come-along handle & it will be much easier to winch up. Also I piece of foam 1 inch pipe insulation wrapped over the cable to dampen it incase in snaps. I also use a large 3 claw puller to get stuck rusty brake drums off. Remove all the shoes & reinstall the drum. Rolls easily then.

Bob, I appreciate the tip.. If we had a pupe we woulda done just that.. no pipe to be had at the moment. A 3 claw puller would work better for sure.. Thanks for watching, we appreciate you!
