Revutsky's compositions often reflected Ukrainian themes and folklore. He aimed to integrate elements of Ukrainian folk music into classical forms, helping to establish a national identity in music during a time of cultural awakening in Ukraine. After graduating from high school, he studied at the faculty of physic-mathematics at the Kiev University and also entered law school, simultaneously studying music.
