I started when i was 56 (60 now) and this talk is right on time ‘cause i’m about to take my first multi-day long distance trip. I’m going to ride my SV650 from Nashville through the Ozarks, a little of the Texas Hill Country and end up in Austin to see the MotoGP race. Wish MM93 would be there but I’m glad if he is recovering. Then I’ll ride home through Mississippi. Can. Not. Wait!!!

I've done camping on my motorcycles since I started riding. Last year, I decided to try using hotels, to travel lighter. Leaving the bike somewhere more public I decided to use a disk lock on the front wheel (I dont normally) Next time I'll take a key as well, so I can unlock it again in the morning. Arrrrgh

Bike shop in the town I was staying in came round with an angle grinder, and then, after I had finished grovelling in thanks and utter embarrassment, went round to their shop. Rammed with awesome AJP and Fantic bikes. So I had a sweet test ride on an AJP 250 trailie (awesome, but useless on road, and with a mad suicide sidestand.) 😁

Best high side low side episode by far. Motorcycling is supposed to be pleasant, soothing, inspiring, adventurous, fun activity that passionate enthusiast can yammer on about for hours on end. KZbin content creators/internet social media has turn motorcycles into a debate about brands, motorcycle type, preferences and personal bias. It’s almost impossible to find any motorcycle media of any kind that doesn’t throw shade at other motorcycle brands and then be told it’s not meant to offend people. Motorcycling is a universal language and should be something that brings people of all types together but unfortunately that is rarely the case. So thank you for an episode that is just about motorcycles and the adventure we have and can have on them. Thank you for the nuggets of wisdom. I’m already on revzilla looking at some of those items for my next trip.

My tankloc trankbag is also my go bag when touring or just going to the office. I keep a water bottle, snacks, tire gauge, battery pack, ear plugs, spare gloves, Aleve (I am that age) etc in it for touring. I do carry a spare 1.6L fuel can as I often go on roads less travelled. Today it is rare to find a stretch greater than 150 miles without two fuel stations but I have run into a situation where one was closed at 75 miles and the next was 70 miles away. Bike had a range of 135 miles when doing my normal highway clip...had to slow it down a lot and still rolled into the gas station coasting. I toured many times with just a giant duffel and a small tank bag but now that I can afford it, I love having hard lugguage and a large tank bag. I rarely fill both 47L bags to the top as I like having the camping gear in a cheap drybag on the pillion seat...sometimes I camp where I have to hike up to the campsite AND need a bear bag. The drybag becomes the bear bag once the site is set up and only one thing to carry up (it is always up) the hill to the site. Motocamping has huge advantages if you like it. All you need is an all-weather hammock (most can be tent when no trees), great sleeping bag and a way to make coffee in the morning. Will be turning 50 on the next big trip and still can sleep on the ground but hammock is much nicer.

I use the red Motul (7100) for my motorcycles. I have a friend that has forgotten to bring his wallet on at least 1 trip. I also have a friend that lost his wallet on a trip and had to borrow money from a complete stranger. The stranger lent him $500. Needless to say the friend repaid that money money as soon as he got home. Plus sent some extras to the most trusting man on the planet.

When you change your clutch cable, keep the old in in place and zip tie it to the new one at bottom and top. Turns a “ let’s fish the cable through all this crap on the side of the road” to a two minute job .

35:40 for one of my morning commutes this past week it was around 35 degrees, so i wore a Frogg Toggs upper portion rain suit over my riding jacket. Let me tell you, it was like the wind and cold air only came through on my gloves, legs and some of my neck but not so much because i got a good balaclava. Definitely agree with the rain suit over the riding jacket

The note about alternative footwear reminds me of a time when I rode my ninja 300 from San Francisco up to Portland for a bachelor's weekend with the boys. We decided to go visit Multnomah Falls, and I had a pair of hiking shoes but my ATGATT self forgot what we were doing so I ended up at the falls wearing some SIDI speedrides which are cut down racing boots that goes down to a ankle height shoe. I ended up hiking all the way up to the falls (a few hundred feet) with those shoes AND my moto jacket and it was not a good time. I have rok straps over the back seat of my FZ-10 after watching Fortnine Ryan's video on moto camping and I have used it for my own camping excursions as well as just being able to strap things down from the store on the seat and occasionally some take out, I can't recommend them enough.

A great thing is I have a mini-wire lock. It's super handy in travel in general, and also with motorcycling since you can quickly attach anything securely and prevent theft if you're just nipping into the bathroom or have to briefly leave your stuff unguarded. The mini-wire lock with spiral cord and combo lock is super small and fits anywhere. It's handy to secure your helmet, even jacket, bags, anything you need to leave for a moment and don't want someone to be able to just take it.

I once MOVED from San Antonio to Colorado Springs on an 08 CBR1000RR. I had a duffel strapped over the tank in front of me, a backpack on front and back, and 2 bags strapped on top of each other on the back.

I used a 35 litre rucksack and loosen the straps so it sits on the pillion seat, did 10 years in the army that teaches you not to pack to much and the benefit is it goes with you so secure.

My r1100rt came with the factory option throttle lock, also tuna in pouches are a great shelf stable option for food.

My Harley Dyna (2011) comes standard with the little thumbscrew to relieve you wrist. I also use a "Crampbuster", a simple little plastic flap that attaches to your throttle grip, and allows you to control the throttle wit hte base of your palm, without needing to grip th throttle non-stop for hours.

Another great episode. I was 😆 when the topic of ramen for sale at Revzilla came up since the timing was perfect. 250 to 300 miles a day is the distance I've learned works best for me if I'm touring for leisure. No rush to get going in the morning, time to stop at interesting places and can get to camp/hotel well before sunset to explore the area. If I get to the destination early and still want to ride, I can pick a direction and go for a exploration ride. May add some miles on the first and last day since I will be riding through my normal riding area. I've heard someone say it's nice to stop close to home for dinner before going home so you can enjoy a recap with those you're touring with and to make it not feel like the last day is to just to ride home. I usually tour alone though. Rain jacket and pants are definitely an economical, light weight and compact way to up the temperature rating of your riding gear.

Just done 3900 km(2400miles), 22 day camping tour around South Island, New Zealand on '14 R1, used Kreiger soft luggage system, works very well indeed, waterproof, durable. Highly recommended.

I agree. As a year round rider in the PNW, my go to is a summer mesh jacket and rain jacket with mid layer if it's really cold. I recommend the system to new riders to start if they can't or don't want to buy gear for all seasons. Same goes for the legs.

Thanks for another informative, moral-lifting, fun(!) episode. Your season-five format with guests like Ari, Joe, Jen, Patrick, and the handsome old-school guy is the best format yet. I'll add a medium-sized safety pin to the list of things for your travel pack. It's good for some quick repairs and even a road-side repair of a troublesome wiring harness (IF you know which wires to short together). I once saved a trip on my much-loved CB750K1 using a a safety pin! BTW, WD-40 is also great as hair gel or for hemoroids, but not so good on toast!

A lot of hotels have a secure area, some will allow you put your bike in there. One chain even (quietly) advertises this for bikers.

One of my must have, tank bag, travel items is a zip lock bag with a small spray can of Lemon Pledge and a soft cloth as a “scratch free” way to clean my face shield 🏍😃👍. (Especially helpful for when the “night bugs” make visibility tough 😉.)

Another great episode! and timely as Sport Touring season is almost upon us here in the northeast! I think that I've gone through pretty much every conceivable iteration of luggage over the years.... I have achieved luggage Zen!!! (it took over 10 years🤣). 2 examples from my Sport Touring past: The ultra light packer: Summer of 2007, along the Croatian coast, I met a young couple on "holiday" from the UK. They were on a CBR1000RR, one piece leathers (lightly scuffed, looked well used), small tank bag, and the girlfriend had a backpack. She wore a bikini under her leathers, he wore swim shorts. Backpack had a couple of t-shirts, beach towel, and personal hygiene items. Tank bag had wallets and electronics (phones and charger). They rode along the coast, stayed on the beach during the day, slept under the stars when possible. They got a motel room about every 3rd day. They were on a 2 week jaunt. I guessed that they were in their late 20s. Chatted for a few minutes. Cool couple and they were in traveling sync. Oh to be young and limber! The overpacker: 9 day round trip NYC to Gunnison Colorado in 2008. My buddy on his 1992 Yamaha GTS (funky machine!), had all 3 factory hard bags stuffed, tank bag, and a duffel on the pillion seat. He brought a spare clutch... and the tools to do the job.... you have to split the engine case to do the job on a GTS 1000😂. You are insane Bill!!! The good news is we didn't have to do the clutch on the road!

Re: Packing Tips: what you are wearing, plus one extra pair of socks, underwear and undershirt; tent, blanket and two trash bags. Wash/rinse/ in sink/hose/river stream and hang on bike to dry. Rain gear … it depends - if it’s going to rain more than two hours, just leave it in the bag … you are going to get wet. Period. I made a bicycle trip from Seattle to Savannah 30 years ago. No, not a motorbike but similar principle, except the extreme difference in weight impact. Started out with panniers on both front and back, plus handlebar and tail packs. Couldn’t ship items back home fast enough. Eventually, ended up with just two rear panniers, tent and blanket - difference of 60 to 15 lbs. On a motorbike, I used a tank bag and back pack - both of which are a pain - personally, I prefer panniers and a tail pack. In terms of lodging, plan on both - depends on length of trip and location. Skip the stove and food - pick up food at gas station along the way. The most important item is to decide where to sleep (hotel or camp) two hours before it gets dark. Waking up to a shotgun in your face in the morning is ʜɪɢʜʟʏ probable. Oh, and bananas. Take lots of bananas.

Good discussion about security. I'll add that hard luggage on a bike looks to a bear (in a national park) like a cooler or food container. Take your bags into your cabin or tent. If you can't do that, leave the bags open so the bears won't open them. Keep your bags clean and free from appetizing scents!

I know all motorcycle security can be breached with enough time but I always carry two disc locks. One on the front and one on the back. At least that way they're not going to lift the front end and wheel it anywhere. Doesn't stop anyone just lifting the whole damn thing though just makes it more inconvenient..

My strategy for parking in sketchy places was to buy a dedicated bike for it. Before COVID, you could find FJR1300s under $4000. They just look like an old, uninteresting bike, especially when you take the luggage off and put it in the hotel. They're also heavy enough that it would take a crew to pick up to put into a truck. If I know where I'll be parked ahead of time, I'll take my newer stuff.

Was supposed to be on a road trip with my family in a car, got called to the office so they went first in the car. i had to ride to the destination myself (close to 250 miles, night time, in the rain, first long road trip). was listening to this episode while working as a crash course for packing and Ari talking about bringing shoes, and of course i forgot to bring a pair of shoes with me. Did a few short hikes with sidi boots, while not terrible, it wasn't the most comfortable thing in the world. will never make that mistake again.

Coffee causing dehydration is an old myth you can put to rest. Even if caffeine has a mild diuretic effect, you ingest more than enough water in the cup of coffee you drink to make that effect trivial. What makes you go to the bathroom more when drinking coffee is simply the fact that you are adding liquid to your body. Drink the same amount of water during the day and you'll go to the bathroom about the same amount of times.

The free locks that are included with purchasing a firearm work great to lock your helmet to your motorcycle. They are nice because the cable part of the lock is silicone/rubber coated so it will not scratch your bike.

Only note about caffeine: drinking tea is fine. Youll hydrate more than you lose from the extra diuretic efffect. Not sure about coffee and energy drinks, though, due to their higher caffeine to liquid intake ratio.

There’s one scenario not mentioned here and that’s moto camping with your kid. Kid is smaller than your partner and thus the amount of equipment needed is much less. Where I live the right to roam includes camping and let me tell you, the amount of adventure is pretty great considering the small amount of money needed if you’ve already got the gear. Make a one day slog into a two day adventure with a night under canvas along the way, the kid will thank you when he or she is all grown up.

At my age (64) camping is not an option, I hate sleeping in a tent and have done so since my military days long ago, Motorcycle trips, however, I love. So there was some useful tips in this podcast, the best takeaway was still the entertainment. But I will adjust my packing slightly and replace my old bungy cords with new rockstraps. Propably also add a duffel bag, the size of my saddlebags are on the smaller side and until now I´ve had a rugsack also but I want to get rid of that. You do a great podcast, always when you come out with a new one I settle down with a good cup of coffee and enjoy the entertainment. So thanks, and keep it up!

Soft luggage is the better option. Buy a horshoe bag, they are water proof and wont brake if you tip the bike over. Hard luggage brakes very easily and starts leaking.

54:08 one time i rode to the Jersey Shore and to store my full face i put the visor in my saddlebag and then hung the helmet on my rearview mirror and ran a kryptonite chain through it and the bottom loop of my handlebar above the triple tree. Couldnt see the chain until you walked up to it. 56:05 i hit a nasty pothole in Connecticut on my way home from New Hampshire and it must have debeaded the rear tire and had a slow flat that didnt render my bike near impossible to ride for like an hour afterwards. Made it to a gas station and tried airing it up and it held, but the next morning found a nasty dent in my rear wheel so that was the end of that riding season. Great stuff Spurgeon Ari and Zack

In 2017 I did a solo 4700 mile, 13 day trip from Chicago to Colorado then back via Monument Valley parts of old Rt66 and a trip down the Coronado trail on my 1975 Honda CB550F.

I like using a bike cover for a little added security. Bikes are shiny. A cover helps them blend into the background. As for planning daily distance, use time rather than mileage. It's far more accurate to say I want to travel 7 hours a day, rather than 500 miles a day. If you use mileage, tough roads or traffic congested areas will hammer you.

Multiple gloves are a great idea. I've been caught in tropical downpours before, it's nice to change into warm dry gloves once the rain stops. Full leather waterproof gloves aren't comfortable in the tropical heat.

I always carry a small cable for locking my helmet (and jacket) to bike. I also always carry a disk lock. Nothing is full proof, but they are discouragements. I've watched an opportunist pick up my helmet only to realize it was cabled to the bike and put it down. I also practiced plugging my tires and have done it on the commute to work in 15 mins.

one time i went on a ride to New Hampshire and stopped in like every state between there and NJ, didnt know i was supposed to have saddlebag brackets to hold the bags from sagging into the rear tire and lost a belt guard and bored a hole in my left saddlebag. 21:00 I was on a 50cc moped going from Victoria BC to Calgary AB via Cranbrook, and my credit card got frozen. When I called fraud prevention to get it reactivated, they said it was frozen due to the "frequent small purchases of fuel". Apparently buying 8 litres of gas every 150-200km looked suspicious!

San Francisco cold??? My dad owned a bike shop in the 60’s-80’s in Alberta, just north of Waterton-Glacier Parks. Even in the middle of summer you can get snow and definitely frost at night in the mountains. If camping make sure your sleeping bag is warm enough AND have a plan for really cold weather… go around it, wait it out, put on long johns.

hey can you guys recommend a glove that I can use for the early morning may or April rides where is still cold out and your hands freeze for the first 2 hours of the ride until you stop at hanks for coffee. lol....My summer gloves don't cut it, but I don't want an all out winter glove.

Get some nitrile gloves, put those on then your summer gloves. it kinda acts like a wetsuit for the water but for the air. just rode 3.5 hours in 44 degrees for a wind chill of 25 ish and this was a life saver granted my figers did go numb but it took longer than just gloves alone. If its still not enough just get the real gloves. hope this helps. Ride safe, have a nice day. Zj.
