Rogue One a Star Wars Story was released in December of 2016. It was the first live action movie released in theaters that was not connected to the saga series. In this episode, Kristian Harloff, Mike Kalinowski and Steph Sawbraw rewatch the film with fresh eyes to see what held up, what they liked and how it will tie in to future TV series.

While I appreciate Kristian's take, to me, the Bor Gullet scene is an ideal Star Wars trope; in so much as there is normally at least one menacing/fantastical creature in each film: For example, in ANH, there is the trash compactor creature. ESB has the Wampa, and asteroid slug. ROTJ has Rancor and Sarlacc. In other words, these creatures help to flesh out the otherworldly nature of the saga...

Loved this episode! I tend to align with Kristian's views about the Stars Wars films. Rogue One was a movie that I enjoyed when I first saw it and liked, even more, every time I've watched it since. This movie ages like fine wine. I thought the beginning was a bit jarring. It needed an opening more like "Solo" to give us a little backstory and ease us into the film. I had read "Catalyst" before seeing the movie so I knew the backstory but I was the only one in my group who saw it opening night that had read that book. I think the soundtrack is strong. My favorite tracks are "Jyn Erso & Hope Suite," "The Master Suite" (when Jyn & Cassian climb the tower to get the plans), and when Vader shows up through the credits. The 3rd act is one of the strongest in the Star Wars series - great action and emotion. Vader wrecking shop is classic and I love how it leads us right into A New Hope.

In terms of the two stand alone SW movies under Disney, what I think Rogue One got right and Solo got wrong is that Rogue One took a simple idea (stealing plans) and built a story around it while Solo took a beloved character and tried to stuff their entire life pre episode IV into it.

Hello everyone! Well, today I might need to watch out not to sound too much of an echo chamber after listening to the discussion. So I'd like to begin with my actual experience at the theatre. I went to the theatre straight after work on opening day and already felt more excited than usual. The first half of the movie hit me so-so during the first viewing. I was too busy taking everything in the movie threw at me. Despite getting heavily distracted by a kid one or two rows behind me, which began to comment the film nearly halfway through its runtime, the second half of the movie absolutely blew me away. I mean, what kind of a third act is that? Absolutely overwhelming! I'm born in 77 and when I left the theatre, I had this warm and fuzzy feeling of just having been given a theatrical experience similar to what the people back in the days might have had, when Star Wars came up. And if it wasn't that extact vibe, at least I felt an overwhelming joy of just having seen a story, that perfectly aligned with the general idea of Star Wars me and my sandbox buddy had, when we were kids, playing around with our Kenner action figures. If I remember correctly, I immediately went for a second viewing the next day and loved it even more (without the annoying kid behind me). Rogue One just has "the feels", the attitude and the style of a true OT Star Wars movie. To me it's a n awesome (no perfect) prologue to A New Hope and if I had to put a bracket around the different eras, the original trilogy became a tale of four movies in 2016. Could Rogue One have developed its characters in a more indepth way? Yes! (Bodhi is a pilot...a pilot...the pilot!) Does it matter? Not really! I think the Andor series is a great opportunity to explore some of the characters in meaningful ways and put a lot more meat to the bone, that will keep Rogue One in itself streamlined, but with a ton of extra background to feed on. Andor's task will also be to build a sense of foreboding. I expect it to pick up the rising tension (with hints and pieces) and maybe steer into the calm before the storm, until the rebels become fully aware there's something truly big about to happen (which apparently surfaces in Rogue One as the cumulation of it all). I also think the Death Star has never been shown more menacing and impactful than in Rogue One. It was such a rough and physical experience when that blast wiped out Jeddah that you felt like a survivor yourself, when that U-wing finally reached space! As for the Tarkin scenes, they never bothered me the same way some people online gush all over them. I don't have a problem admitting, that during my first viewing those scenes totally hit me off guard. I just sat in that chair, my jaw dropped and my brain tried to wrap itself around what I was just watching there on the screen. It totally tricked me the first time around and if that makes me a fool, I was at least a happy fool for those magic moments! :) Unfortunately when The Mandalorian came up with Luke Skywalker I had the exact opposite reaction because of Rogue One. Ironic, isn't it? All in all its just an amazing movie and perhaps the most seamless addition to the Star Wars cinematic branch we've had from Disney so far. Ending literally 5 minutes before the events of A New Hope was a brilliant choice as was to unleash Vader for some moments of absolute carnage.

I think Bodi originally lost his mind permanently. I think that would have driven home how much of an extremist Saw was. And that's also why we see Saw on the beach in the trailers. When I first saw Rogue One in theaters opening night, the sound in the last 10 minutes of the film was out of sync with the movie. That’s right. Arguably one of the best scenes in Star Wars movies, the Vader scene, was completely out of sync. We heard the lightsaber turn on after he slashed like 3 guys haha. The entire theater went into chaos with a guy in the theater banging on the projector window screaming for a refund. It definitely wasn’t the best experience. Aside from that, I enjoyed Rogue One. Personally I think The Last Jedi is the best film of the Disney era, but Rogue One is probably the most unique. To make a Star Wars film with all new characters and to kill off all of those characters by the end was a ballsy move by Disney that they don’t get enough credit for. I was really hyped for Rogue One when it came out and bought EVERY Jyn Erso toy. I wouldn’t say it exceeded my expectations, but I thought Rogue One was very good and still do today.

To me the *best* Disney era Star Wars movie is still The Last Jedi so far but Rogue One is easily the most fun, accessible and just flat out entertaining. I wouldn't say its the best because the characters are all a bit bland and underdeveloped and the story is all over the place in the first two acts but the third act is some of the best Star Wars action ever. Glad you finally stopped hating on Giacchino's score too it's really great. Also I can't stand how half the people on the internet spell this movie as Rouge One xD

11:40 "we know the spies aren't going to make it out", why do you say that? There was nothing in Star Wars that implied that whoever stole the plans were killed in the process. In fact it said "rebel spies have stolen the plans to the Death Star" and they cut to princess Leia's ship it is highly suggested that the spies were with her. Read the crawl carefully, it says rebel spaceships striking from a hidden base have won their first victory against the empire and during the battle rebel spies managed to steal the plans, pursued by the empire princess Leia races home aboard her starship custodian of the plans. To me that sounds like her ship was clearly at the battle, she was with the spies (if not one of the spies) and her ship was escaping the battle and being pursued by Darth Vader. She had been dealing with her for some time, he even says you weren't on any Mercy mission this time! So when he saw her ship make a run for it he know that she or someone on her ship must have the plans. It's all right there in black and yellow. Anything else is reading in a bunch of stuff that isn't there nor conceived of at the time. I think it meant exactly as I said that they were at a battle they stole the plans and she was trying to get away with them. Everything else has been retconned. In any case, no where did it say that "they didn't survive" until captured by Vader. If they had died at the Battle, I don't think it would have been referred to as a "victory" in the crawl. It would have said something more like "rebel spies bravely sacrificed their lives to get the stolen plans to Leia who now races home aboard her starship." The line about many bothans died to bring us this information is from return of the jedi, there was no similar line in Star Wars that said anything about the spies "not making it". At least until Vader got a hold of princess Leia's ship. It was all retconned (placing the former Canon from the radio adaptation, which does place Leia's ship at the Battle where the plans were transmitted to her ship) to make the movie rogue one, but other than that there is no indication from the source that the spies did not survive and weren't with Leia fleeing Darth Vader. In fact he immediately accuses her of being a spy as soon as she is captured. So it would make perfect sense to assume the spies referred to in the opening crawl referred to Leia and whoever else was with her on her ship.

I wholeheartedly believe the better version of Rogue One is sitting on a computer drive somewhere. All the rumors and speculation point to the original cut being heavily influenced by the studio. Tony Gilroy supposedly handled reshoots and the initial trailer footage shows an entirely different ending. Now I can’t watch the movie without the flow of the film feeling unnatural to me, as if scenes are completely missing in between. I also find it odd how Gareth Edwards hasn’t directed a film since.

The only Disney film where I left the theater truly thrilled at what I had just watched. Hear alot of comments about how the visuals were so beautiful in The Last Jedi, personally I think this film had some incredible shots and how the hell did it not win an Oscar for visual effects? Especially with the bold recreation of Tarkin. Going to add a super nerdy comment - the filmmakers pointed out the effort they made in matching the Ep. 4 Vader costume yet they used the AT-ST design from Ep. 6 and didn't use the one from Ep. 5. Only know the difference because of the original Kenner toy...

Another great review/discussion! I love this movie! Easily the best one put out under the Disney brand. I agree there was no need for "Bor Gullet". I also wasn't a fan of the choice in accent for Saw Guerra they went with. Bit like how they changed General Grievous in Revenge of the Sith compared to the animated shorts which was far more menacing. Loll, I also didn't like the crappy font for the title. The versions used in the posters are so much nicer. Having said all that the rest of the movie was brilliant. The aesthetic was authentic and overall tone to the original Star Wars was nailed on. The characters, acting and dialogue were all great. The visual effects were spot on and I really liked what they achieved with Tarkin. Out of the two, I thought Leia was the weaker attempt but still great for the time! They managed to capture a lot of emotion in this movie and that's a testament to the acting, script and the score which I really loved and grows on me even more every time I re-watch the movie! Finally, that Vader scene at the end was EVERYTHING!! It's so easy to get carried away and say I wanted to see more (which I obviously would) but it hit all the right notes in the context of this movie and was perfectly executed!

I love Rogue One more and more, I feel like it has the best rewatch value out of the modern Disney star wars. The tone of the movie is great, they never try to diminish the drama with random comedy like in the modern sequels. The characters are all great and they don't get in the way of the story like in the modern sequels where it feels like the actors get in the way of the characters and story they are trying to tell. It has great star wars moments without having to be just fan service. Appreciate these rewatch discussions really remind me of the old collider commentaries.

Really liked Rogue One, i saw it three times in theaters, but it is also the least fun/entertaining on rewatches. Not that it is a chore to get through, to me personally, it has the least interesting characters out of the Disney films. As a big fun of Clone Wars and Rebels, it was fantastic having Saw in here (plus, geez, how great is Forest Whitaker?!) but if you don't know him, i can't see anyone liking him from this because of how ham he is. The bummer ending is cool, the warlike cinematography is great, and i still think the Tarkin CG holds up well today, though Leia looks terrible. This is, imo, because ILM just really isn't all that great. Weta is easily the best effects company out there and i wish ILM could measure up. When you compare even Gollum from 2002 to Rogue One, it's a clear winner. But i digress. Very well made film but it is lacking a real soul to me.
