If you ever make it to Monschau during winter, when it's snowy, I can highly recommend it.

Bonus information: The long straight part of the road from Aachen up the Eifel to Monschau is called "Himmelsleiter", "stairway to heaven".

It is a lovely little romantic village. But it is completely overrun by tourists in the summer period. Therefore a visit in early spring is advised. Parking is limited ( and expensive) , so take that in account too.

To my eyes, the weather enhanced the visual appeal of this video. The light from an overcast sky has an effect on the colors that is more pleasing in some aspects than the contrasty light from a bright, sunny day.

I went there last year for a few days in Winter and I would like to add that it's also surrounded by quite a lot of hiking paths. I went on a gorgeous hike along the river.

For Belgian visitors, there's also a Belgian bus from Eupen, TEC bus number 385, but that one only runs 4 times a day on weekends and some holidays. As with all buses in the region, it is accessible with a Euregio ticket. It's a wonderful area and definitely worth a trip. Have fun this Sylvester evening, everyone!

Well, the weather only reflects the dismal and sad colours of the Eifel mountains around. All those grey and darkish stones and bricks... bright sunshine doesn't fit there at all... ;P

Great end of the year video. As for the weather, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Belgian weather for the most part during this time of the year is wet and shivering cold. I lived there for a few years. Happy New Year 2019 to you and your family.

Unfortunate weather? Bullshit! It was _beautiful!_ I love rainy days, and it was lovely seeing Monschau in the rain~ What I hate is cloudy days with a thin cloud layer. The diffuse, bright white light is just ugly. This doesn't go for days with thick, but individual, relatively small clouds. Seeing the blue sky above, and the directly sunlit clouds, is actually very nice. Anyway, I'm getting off topic. Main point: I'm glad you went there on a rainy day, because I absolutely adore the fog-like effect of rain over larger distances, as well as the general lighting in rainy weather and the shiny sheen of wetness on the ground, the plants, and the buildings.

Rain can be beautiful visually but the humidity fucks up my nose and throat and makes me kinda itchy
@theuncalledfor6 жыл бұрын
@Siegfried Yeah, thunderstorms are awesome. I do like certain kinds of cloudy, as I said. The kinds where you can see spectacular cloud formations, especially when they're illuminated in just the right way. But there are days with just a solid white cloud cover, and I just can't bring myself to like those. It's bland and ugly, and white is pretty close to my least favourite color. Too bland. I approve of your way of thinking about the weather, but I'm not capable of replicating it in my own head.

It's a shame this video is labelled 2018 as within a day, people will see it as out of date and it will get less views. Rewboss "Destination" videos remain useful for many years after they are made, but I think putting a year on them discourages people from watching older Destination videos.

With high water it is also a popular whitewater kayaking spot and also hosts tournaments, where you have nice spotting points as visitors in Monschau. Directly near Monschau is also the national park Eifel, which is also worth a visit - it includes an international dark-sky region, one of the the few regions in Germany, where you can still see the milky way - which is quite remarkable as big population centers like Aachen region Cologne and the lit Belgium high ways are near (other regions are in remote Brandenburg and in the Alpin regions. They set up telescopes for visitors on clear night there. www.nationalpark-eifel.de/en/experience-national-park/dark-sky-park/

Wait, so say I steal something in a store in Monschau and the German Police comes after me but I make it to the Belgian path,would they be able to arrest me?
@ingridchristiansen43676 жыл бұрын
No, it Looks they cannot unless you give Up or starve.
@Rick20101006 жыл бұрын
Yes and No - they can follow and catch you, but than they have to hand you over to the local Police. But it is unlikely that they do this for a small shop theft, because of the massive paperwar. In the case of armed robbery, they have to and the Belgian Police will also chase you.

The main reason this town is so nice besides its bit of old affluence: it didn't get bombed into the ground in WW2.
@Breakfast_of_Champions6 жыл бұрын
@Siegfried Yes, there are lots of nice little places with timber frame houses etc. Monschau is a little pearl as you don't expect it in an area where the farmers always stayed poor.
@canuzzi6 жыл бұрын
@Siegfried It depends - especially at the same river (Rur). The city Jülich was destroyed over 98% and Linnich over 90%. Jülich was one (when not the) of the most destroyed cities in the whole war. Also around Monschau there were many villages nearly completly destroyed - as the West Wall was running through this region.
@canuzzi6 жыл бұрын
@Siegfried Yes, but Jülich was especially heavy air bombed as it was still labeled as fortress on Allied maps, due to the Zitadelle and city fortification from the 16th century and further fortifications added by the French, when they occupied the town under Napoleon. Ironically the only buildings surviving were the Zitadelle fortificaton and the large Brigde head added under Napoleon (just google map Jülich - they are still up and standing - by the way - Jülich was the first town northern of the alps to get a bastion fortification). The Allied had still some trouble crossing the Rur as it was addidional flooded by the Germans from the dams upriver. The Germans brought also in additional significant reinforcement to secure the flank for the Ardenne offensive, which resulted in heavy atillery fights and tank battles there.
@canuzzi6 жыл бұрын
@Siegfried It was also considered to give up Jülich. After the large air bombing in 1944 it was completly evacuated and had 0 inhabitants, but still a running city administration, which was evacuated to Düsseldorf - which is SO German.
