On the very edge of Germany, yet at the centre of German history, the city of Aachen features hot springs, an 8th-century chapel now part of a massive cathedral, and the chance to visit two other countries simultanously.
With grateful thanks to the Aachen Cathedral Chapter for their help in the making of this video. Find out more about the cathedral and plan your visit at www.aachenerdo...

I visited Aachen this past October. I’m not sure how to correctly describe what set it apart from the other cities I visited (Frankfurt, Köln, Düsseldorf, and Neuss) but Aachen was by far my favorite. The atmosphere and mood of the city was very appealing to me. I can’t wait to go back one day. Ich liebe dich, Aachen! Du warst meinen Lieblingsstadt!

Aachen's bus system is still based on its old tram system. The second or third digit of a bus number usually denotes the axis, so 5, 15, 25, 35, 45, 55, 65, 125 any 135 all generally go into in the same direction. Maps of the system can be found on aseag.de under "Netzpläne". AVV local tickets and other German offers are valid on all* buses in Aachen, including Dutch ones on line 44 and Belgian ones on line 14. Exceptions are buses that only stop in Aachen once (like Arriva's 21 from Uniklinik to Hoensbroek) and also the express line 350 to Maastricht. On the other hand, you can travel to Kelmis (bus 24), Vaals (bus 25, 33) and Kerkrade (bus 34) with all AVV and other German tickets and to Heerlen (bus 44 or train RE18) with selected AVV tickets

For some international travel in the region, I recommend the Euregio ticket. It costs €18,50 and is valid on all regional transport in the AVV, buses and trains in Dutch southern Limburg, buses in both Belgian Limburg and the province of Liège and some railway lines. On weekends, one ticket can be used by up to 2 adults and 3 children, an absolute bargain.
@SimonS44

@@barvdw it also includes buses and trains in the district of Euskirchen (which is VRS and not AVV). And yes, it's a great offer.

During the final weeks of WWII, fighting around Aachen was so significant that the city, which had been mostly spared from bombings throughout the earlier years was reduced to rubble in large parts. In fact, some military historians have dubbed it 'America's Stalingrad'. On the outskirts of the city, you can still see the anti-tank-barriers of the Westwall, a large series of fortifications raised against Allied incursions. Small personal anecdote: During a walk in the surrounding forests when I was a child, I once found an unexploded WWII American hand grenade. Unexploded ordonnance is not a severe problem, but if you're lucky (or rather: if you're unlucky), you might see some.

There are only two other cities (with a population > 100,000) in the world that start with 'Aa' and they're both in Denmark. But Aalborg and Aarhus don't beat Aachen on the lists! The only city that does is cheating - computerized systems usually put Spanish A Coruña before Aachen because of the space.

I was struck by your comments at 6:30 describing how Richard of Cornwall had to please the local businessmen's needs. No doubt they approached him as they do to this day, with small bags of cash! Here in my country they call themselves Political Action Committees or PAC's for short. I think the concept of carrying bags of cash to get your problems solved still works. A small correction to the tripoint remarks. The Vaalserberg tripoint is not the highest point in the Netherlands, that honour goes to the 877 meter high volcano Mount Scenery on the tiny Carinbbean island of Saba. It also isn't the highest point of the Netherlands proper, which consists of the Netherlands and the Caribbean Netherlands (Bonaire, St Eustatius and Saba) as that is also Mount Scenery (the Kingdom of the Netherlands consisting of the Netherlands, Curaçao, Aruba and St Martin). It is however the highest point of the Netherlands in Europe. It's a bit confusing I know.

Interesting, albeit not surprising (to me) - I'd hazard a guess that _most_ Europeans outside the Netherlands aren't aware of the 4-nation status of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

im not sure since youre british breakfast might have a different meaning to you but I found that rather than eating ( and booking ) breakfast in a hotel I find it enjoyable to skip hotel breakfast and istead find a local bakery, have a croissant or something similiar and a coffee there. I try and make sure that its one that locals visit and not one made for tourists since it adds to the traveling exerpience and is usually cheaper. Granted I have never really tried it in germany since we tend to have breakfast at home but if you happen to visit Italy or France at some point I can only suggest it

@@mehdimaleki3246 Currently it can be quite difficult to rent a home here. It depends on the time when you are coming. Just before the semester starts in April and October it usually is the most difficult. What kind of home are you looking for? A single room in a shared apartment or an apartment for yourself? Prices start at around 200€ / month + internet, heating etc. Possibly the most affordable apartments are "die Türme" about 10 minutes north of Uni.

For a mostly clean and boring sterile country like the Netherlands, it was pretty cool there, partly duo to the over 50% foreign students. You should avoid the places like Markt, Vrijthof, Platielsstraat, or that shitty The Lab. But Liege has really cool things also like Kultura, pot a lait and more.
