Charlemagne had Aachen built up into his favorite residence. From here he ruled over his huge empire, which stretched from the North Sea to the Mediterranean. In 2014 Aachen is commemorating Charlemagne, who died there 1200 years ago. With the imperial cathedral as its focal point, special exhibitions with sumptuous objects from all over Europe bring Charlemagne's era to life.

Charlemagne, Charles the Great, lived in Aachen. It's a very old and beautiful city ❤️ Could have been a better documentary.

Is Charlemagne considered French or German or both or neither? I read once that he preferred beer over wine which seemingly would tip the scales to German

Maybe both. Franks were a Germanic tribe after all.

@@petermages9482 Charlemagne forbidden the use of Germanic languages didn't he? He considered himself French and Roman I think. He was ethnically Frankish.

The "bleching" ritual sounds correct. The lords of pre-medieval and medieval Germany were "mead-hall lords" meaning that in order to keep power, you had to entertain your best warriors or they would simply defect. There is a hint of this in BEOWULF and other tales from the early period. I have always wondered why the Germans waited until AFTER the Roman period to start building Castles. So if Karl der Grosse was Frankish, then he was familiar with the situation in Gaul. Seems logical. The Franks might have originated the Castle design after putting old Roman forts to use as strong holds for Frankish lords. I bet there was quite a bit of Gallo-Roman discontent against the Franks, probably a lot of riots and outright banditry, thus nessesitating the Castle.

Charlemagne... CARL! Why the excess use of only how the French call him? His LATIN name was Carolus, and I get it, he ruled what is later Split into France and Germany, and the Germans call him to this day Carl (the great). Both Countries claim him as their historic Emperor. 😅

aix la chapelle is (as the name makes clear) is a chapel, not a cathedral - which is how he wanted it.

2%? It's said that all Europeans are descended from Charlemagne, since mathematically, anyone that long ago who has any living descendants is the ancestor of everyone alive.

I don't think he was illiterate! He couldn't have been as powerful as he was if he was unlettered. I'll credit that story of him being illiterate to later historians.
