Rewriting Star Wars Episode VII | KnockBack: The Retro and Nostalgia Podcast Episode 159

We're pretty hard on Star Wars here on KnockBack. But it's only because we care so damn much! Yet, we're rarely (if ever) asked to put up or shut up when it comes to the topic... until now. As voted on by our listeners, this episode is the first of three that will be dedicated to the new Star Wars trilogy, but through a simple lens: If given free reign, what would our new trilogy look like, one that takes place after the events of Return of the Jedi and includes as much or as little of established lore as possible? Well, today, we open our respective trilogies with our Episode VIIs. Dagan sets up a tale of familial redemption through haunting spectres of Darth Vader's past. Colin writes about an out-of-control corporation commanded by a religious prophet intent on showing the lies of the Force. They are very different stories from each other, and certainly different from canon. Naturally, we hope you enjoy both.

Both the stories were great. The plot of Colin's seemed a bit better but Dagan's had better characters. Also maybe the next one you can take turns telling the whole story because they both kind of blended together in my mind now. I cant wait for you guys to talk about the Mandalorian. Its getting so much right that the sequel trilogy got wrong.

This is great have been loving the new content especially the video aspect. I find CLS to be inspiring in a difficult time. Colin showing that even being alienated by what feels like so many people that you can still overcome, build your own identity and be successful.

This was so bittersweet. Both of the stories put forward were excellent and captured my imagination. I could see and hear the scenes and characters. Its devastating to come to the end of the episode and back to reality to realize that these stories will never go any further. I am begging you to get somebody to write these into books or comics. It would be so good.

Wow, I don't know which version I like better. Colin put it perfectly, his feels more like a spinoff trilogy and Dagan's more like a 'proper' sequel, both great. Listening to this and just imagining these two stories gave me more joy than watching episodes 7, 8 & 9 put together. Can't wait for the continuation.

This is SO f'kn good! I love it! I miss listening to you guys, I took the year off from listening to podcasts, moved from Guam to the US and never got back to listening to these. I like Dagan's vision for the acolytes and I think it would be really cool to center a narrative around a female in that group that was disillusioned with the passion and anger that goes along with the dark side but goes along in indifference because it what she grew up in. It's all she knows. Imagine like a Nazi camp guard that exists in that evil... I imagine there may have been some people who operated in that space with indifference just because of their German identity and what they were surrounded by. I don't know if we have seen a dark side force user that sort of "falls" to the light without outside influence by another individual.

Cool idea for a series, just started listening but it is interesting how there's a ton of creativity arising from simply trying to counter the mistakes of the sequels. I presume your respective trilogies also 'overwrite' of the old EU stuff, in my opinion the more famous EU novels would have made perfectly serviceable sequel films (20 years ago).

Both stories were great set ups for a sequel trilogies, however if I had 1 criticism it's that Colin's hook with the evangelical twist at the end is so good that it overshadows the rest of the movie.

I want to add to the part where Dagan talks about the identical twins switching Lightsabers, they would switch them mid fight to really bamboozle their opponents. Maybe Dagan meant this exact thing but that's how I was envisioning it when he talked about it.

While I liked both, personally I would say I prefer Colin's movie, in large part because the plot feels more realistic. It's also because, like he said, it feels smaller in scale, which I think is exactly what I want from Star Wars. I think the smaller scale is a large part of why The Mandalorian is so much better than anything else we've gotten from Star Wars for a long ass time. Solo was another great movie (honestly in my top 3 of the entire series) because it felt more like a heist movie in space than just another "good vs evil" story.

to be honest if I were rewriting the sequel trilogy I'd keep what we got in force awakens and change last jedi and by changing last jedi that would also change rise of skywalker since I feel like many of the problems of the rise of skywalker had to do with plot points not being resolved properly or not at all
