This is one of the main reasons why a lot of Canadians voted for the Liberals is because they made this pledge. The 2015 Federal election would be the last time the First past the Post system would be used. Now his popularity seems to override his commitment to ending this outdated method of vote counting, this is very disappointing to many of us.

Just like the Liberals attacked Harper's healthcare funding changes, Harper's CO2 targets, Harper's LNG pipeline, Harper's handling of public sector unions, Harper's Saudi arms deal, Harper's C-51, Harper's handling of first nations, and then mimiced him on every one of those issues. I'm disappointed that Trudeau is backing down on this issue, but not the least bit surprised. The Liberals always campaign like the NDP and govern like the Conservatives.

Justin is deplorable the way he pretends to be a femanist, but has the women in his cabinet lower than the men. or like how he is for the middle class so he gives a tax break, but takes a tax grant for kids away and introduces a new tax where if Provences don't implement it in a couple years the liberals will force it down their throats.

@doitalldan53268 жыл бұрын
I did, but I live in bc and we don't have much say in the elections. I think conservative won in my area, but it didn't mean anything compared to the east. that's one of the reasons why I am for the west separating from the east. it's like the east are cats and the West are dogs, but the cats' owners protect them and hold the dogs down. one day the dog's gonna bite.

This voter turnout all of Canada voted Liberal. I was watching the coverage from Ontario and the West was among the first votes to be counted, all liberal. If you want the west to separate, good luck creating a new separate economy; look how well that's been working for the Quebecois. Oh wait, they're still a part of Canada....

Of course he backed away from it. Pierre Trudeau once tried eliminating it, but his party rebelled against such moves simply because they wanted to keep their 'majority'. I'm absolutely positive he looked into it and discovered this, making a grinding halt before the discussion can even happen.

Electoral reform would go against the foundation of provinces uniting almost 150 years ago. In committee NOT ONE other system was deemed better, as they all created problems.... Not saying FPTPT is perfect, but it is the Canadian system and removing it would make our democracy NOT CANADIAN anymore.

Trudeau's Liberals were elected with changing the voting system as one of their core promises. Canada currently uses FPTP (so does America), which is short for First Past the Post. That is, whichever party gets the most votes in a given riding wins that seat, and every other vote that wasn't for the winning party essentially doesn't count. In America it's not quite so bad because there are only 2 major parties so the winner must have > 50%, but in Canada with our 3-5 major parties (depending on who you ask), it's common to see governments elected with 40% or even less of the popular vote. So the Liberals promised to change this system, but are now backing away from it, as the Liberal Party is known to do with all their election-season promises.
@AK-oj2bf8 жыл бұрын
Joseph Gubbels Very good summary. Being a conservative. I for one wouldn't bother voting anymore. Not because I'm protesting but because there would be no point. This would ensure that the Liberals were either the governing party or official opposition after every election.

Each Vote should count as one, otherwise my vote doesn't count like in the last election. i won't waste my time voting again because my vote doesn't count unless you revise our electoral system as you promised.
@chipahoy35308 жыл бұрын
Rex is ignoring reality here. Yeah he flip-flopped, but intellectually that is the best decision they could have made. First past the post is not a very strong electoral system, but changing it would be incredibly difficult. The promise was originally made to steal votes from the NDP, who were campaigning heavily on electoral reform despite not having a concrete plan to change things. Not changing the current system is estimated to have little to no effect whatsoever on his approval ratings nor is it expected to reduce the amount of political capital the liberals have built up over the past year, if there is one policy that is worth dropping in order to get the rest of the promises done with, it was this one. Now obviously this is a partisan decision, but does Mr. Murphy want to imply that the conservatives didn't enjoy partisan politics? Is he implying that there is an intellectual conflict with the PM trying to push his party's agenda, but that conflict didn't exist within the conservative government? This is the problem with modern-day right-wingers in Canada, too focused on making the next sound bite (such as "intellectual equivalent of a selfie"), which is just repeated from the last right-wing echo chamber you happened to be in, to actually realize the real issues at hand or do anything to change them. Until now, the biggest problem conservative voters seem to have with Justin Trudeau is that he is popular. Rather than present us with a policy position that they oppose, and why. We are presented with an attack at his popularity for flip-flopping, which is a play taken straight from Harper's playbook. And then to attack the intelligence of this move without actually considering the outcomes that are implied. The hypocrisy is on display, and it's unfortunate to see this sort of bias sticking out like a sore thumb on a Canadian news network. Especially considering Mr. Murphy opposed electoral reform under Harpers government, but now supports it under Trudeaus. He is making the exact same intellectual fallacy that he is accusing the PM of having made.

Chip Ahoy Rex Murphy was attacking Trudeau’s “FLIP FLOPPING” . Nothing more . The squeaky clean-cut Justin Bie...ugh...,Trudeau is like every other politician with his pandering and platitudes . THIS was Rex’s message 👍

Didn't vote Liberal because he also took the coward's way out of committing to fix C-51. Sadly Trudeau has proved yet again once in power a politician never wants to fix the broken system that got him/her there. Our only choices (faint hopes) left for fixing FPTP now are Green or NDP. We have to go through each party and throw out each one that reneges on this once given their chance.
