Rex Viper Live 2023: Did They Finally Get it Right This Time?!

In this video I thoroughly review the performance of James Rolfe's pet project "Rex Viper". The band performed live at the Too Many Games Expo in, like, July of 2023. For good while there were barely any clips of this performance that could be found online unlike their previous two performances which were readily available soon after. After much speculation the full video finally surfaced under the new "Rex Viper" KZbin channel. Enjoy... I stayed up extra late finishing this one.

Although James is 'the Nerd', i find the leadsinger quite nerdy. The way he often acts and in the scene you point out is 'feeling the music throug every vessel of his body because he is a musical artist' is really cringy to me. He is such a goofy (which is fine when you are aware of this, but this guy clearly isn't) persona, not the way a lead singer of a rockband should act. He does look like a genuine nice guy though, just not leadsinger material in presence or voice.

The club found this Eminem wannabe to open for him -- I'll keep him anonymous - who came onstage wearing a backwards baseball cap. Literally as he's introducing himself and telling us he was born & raised in Chi-town, he turns his cap around and it's an Oakland A's cap. WOMP WOMP.... This anecdote probably doesn't translate well to the written word, but trust me that it was absolute pitch-perfect comedy timing.

The entire concept of Rex Viper is weird to begin with. They aren't even an "80s-band", because most of the game music they cover is from the 90s, but they mash it up with 80s songs anyway. It's as appealing as when 90s DJs discovered they could take some generic techno beats and put them with Bach, Mozart and Beethoven.

Seeing James with his cable not through the strap makes me wonder things like: does he even change strings before these shows? Does he even know how to change strings? Hell, he seems like the type of guy whose probably completely oblivious to things like dead strings, proper intonation, setup, etc. If so, does he has a real guitar tech or does he pay the slobs to worry about it? Did he pick his bandmates solely because they're also named James? It would be very interesting to know this stuff. Also if you google Rex Viper the first member on the list is Justin💀

Your analysis, just like last years, again closely resembles my own (Although they DID say 'Rising up to the challenge of a gameboy' later in the bridge... I know because I sat there listening to the entire thing, frozen by some unseen, fleshy hand resolved to torture me)... Going down the list, the bassist (from what I could hear at least) and the drummer were there and showed up. So that's cool. The keyboardist was easily the highlight of this entire show for me. The lead guitarist's playing ability is once again easily the worst out of all of them, and I don't know whether that's because of lack of actual practice with these song, or he's just horrible live... either way... While James isn't the worst player, he basically butchers (wrong chords, starts/stops) the entirety of Eye of the Tiger. If you listen with headphones you can hear it in the left channel, but no need to torture yourself, you can just believe me if you want lol. Lastly, the singer is in way over his head at those keys. Listening to him, and I'm not trying to be a dick here but, I don't believe he actually knows how to 'sing'.. like in the classical-some-form-of-training-warms-up-before-he-performs way... I feel like the vowels he uses aren't correct, I feel like he isn't activating the right mechanisms to apply rasp correctly (false chords and whatnot) and, like you said, to even attempt those keys with that amount of air, it just sounds painful. Oh, and one other thing, there was someone on their video claiming that the recording did not come from the board mix. Whether that is true or untrue, all the instruments recorded are from ONE UNIQUE SOURCE EACH, that much IS true. The volume levels and audio positioning of all the instruments, regardless of the camera, stay exactly the same throughout, so maybe someone from Screenwave had a Zoom recorder set up on a tripod somewhere or something akin to it IF none of the recording was taken from the board. Now, lets assume this is true, that none of the instruments are taken from the board mix directly and this was all recorded on a stationary device... if THAT'S the case, then this is the shittiest live sound I've ever heard. So, I'm with you, I would more believe that the drums were stripped from the board (at the very least AND given how dry they sound) and the rest of the audio from a stationary recording device. I couldn't get a good look whether their amps were actually mic'd either, but I did at least see the presence of a PA system and monitors. But, I'm done rambling. Good, honest review as always!

I wish Cinemassacre was still on good terms with Kyle Justin. Much rather see Kyle play the theme and other songs he's written for AGVN than the randos in rex viper.

You have really good presentation, a great voice and aesthetic and attitude, perfect for reviews. I GAF about Rex Viper's sh*tshow, and you give the best run down of their shows. That's why I am subscribed. Question, Why are they performing in front of a "The Water Tower" banner? Couldn't manage to make a Rex Viper display?

I have no idea what the lead guitarist is doing in some songs. Like in the Moon theme, is he even playing in the same key? Big Frankie fan BTW.

Oh Dear God, I thought Rex Viper was done , yet here we are. Josh is pretty much spot on with the analysis here. As a rapper i've never had an "announcer" but I've had a hype man. When you start the show with "alright nerds, are you rocking to rock?!?" that's already a bad omen. The lead singer isn't bad, I think in the studio he'd be fine, but he sings outside his range live. The big problem is these dudes don't vibe together. You can tell they only talk and jam out via Skype or Zoom, rather than in person.

It's just not an organic thing to me. I would have liked to see James to do a music project with "behind the couch guitar guy" Kyle Justin. At least Kyle could play and sing.
