Squares I recommend (affiliate):
Starrett Engineer's Square (pricey, but worth it): amzn.to/2HflMMU
Small Machinist's Square (good accuracy at a low price): amzn.to/2JwmwyO
6 Inch Engineer's Square (my preferred size): amzn.to/2LDWNr8
Speed Square: amzn.to/2W2GjfU
Framing Square (mine is a Stanley, but this Starrett is very cheap and gets good reviews): amzn.to/2Q2lPP1
Try Square: All of mine are vintage and since I don't own any new ones, I don't feel I can recommend any.
Woodwork for Humans Tool List (affiliate)|| Stanley 12-404 Handplane: amzn.to/2TjW5mo
Honing Guide: amzn.to/2TaJEZM
Green buffing compound: amzn.to/2XuUBE2
Cheap metal/plastic hammer for plane adjusting: amzn.to/2XyE7Ln
Spade Bits: amzn.to/2U5kvML
Metal File: amzn.to/2CM985y (I don't own this one, but it looks good and gets good reviews. DOESN'T NEED A HANDLE)
My favorite file handles: amzn.to/2TPNPpr
Block Plane Iron (if you can't find a used one): amzn.to/2I6V1vh
Vaughn Bear Saw: amzn.to/2WoIzLP
Dewalt Handsaw: amzn.to/2IAHX1Z

One of the main benefits of a speed square is that it's a very handy quick fence for circular saw cuts at 90 and 45 degrees. Set the square down on the board, put the saw blade on/next to the line and slide the square/fence over and make your cut. Can also be used for a hand saw

Dear Rex, I am from Berlin, Germany. About two years ago I started to get interested in wood work, and I started watching a huge amount of youtube videos - and I learned a lot from them. Your channel is in my view the best combination of teaching, story telling and having fun! THANK YOU for your great effort to produce such high quality and instructive videos! I only have a small chamber for wood working - only 6 or 7 square meters - and use only a few electric tools: a screw driver, a stiching saw and sometimes a sanding tool. All other works I do manually. And I bought most of my (used) tools on ebay. Thus, your ideas and recommendations are really worthy for me. Thanks again!

I'm in berlin too! I kind of have a similar "shop" although I shouldn't dare call it that way. I also started recently, and although it's not my main activity, sometimes I think it could be interesting to find some contact to join forces with, perhaps for a laid back market project or simply friendly exchange of ideas or materials.

As someone who spent a year in Berlin (and frankly misses it... hopefully I'll be back one day), I'm glad to see it represented (even though I'm currently in the states). :) I look forward to seeing the 🇩🇪 on the wall at some point (even though I know there's a very different relationship to flags there than what we have here... heh.)

Hi Rex - I’m a Brit living in Australia, so my allegiance to the flag depends on who is winning the cricket or rugby! Would be happy to see either flag on your wall. I have a couple of projects in mind for my workshop - a Union Flag (Union Jack) made of three different shades of wood, and a map of Australia, with each of the states and territories again in a different shade of wood. All made from reclaimed pallet wood, of course 😁😉 Keep up the great videos

I'm obviously late to this party, but this video is _exactly_ what I needed. I'm a DIYer who does a little of everything, from woodworking to welding (jack of all, master of nothing) and try squares are a common thread in almost everything I do; from setting up a router bench to squaring metal for welding to keeping pipework square when plumbing. Every tip I can glean on this subject saves me time later on, and that's gold. I'm currently looking for a new adjustable square as the cheap Stanley one I bought turned out to have a locking bolt made from plastic. Really, I have no words for that. So thankyou for this, and count a new subscriber to your channel. Greetings from Scotland. 🇬🇧

Hello from France. I'm a mechanic and have spent years working on vehicles, welding and making things out of metal but I've always loved wood so I decided to make an oak bed for myself. I looked for videos on squares to find out how to use them, I was all set to get a speed square as it seemed to be the most versatile. I'm glad I found your video before spending money on something that may not have been as useful as I thought.

Poland! :) And about squares, my idea for best precision square is the square not from a fancy brand, but with a norm. In Europe it is DIN 875 (even lowest precision grade 2 is super precise). You can buy made in Europe square with angle precision of 0,03 mm (1/2-1/3 of human hair) for 10$. Way more precise than 99,999% of squares and cheaper than any "woodworker brand" square.
