Where I live in the US we have forest fires. Our firefighters have told people that if they refuse to leave after a mandatory evacuation order has been issued, they are on their own. Firefighter's lives are not going to be put at risk to save stupid people. It has been very effective. Your rescue people should adopt the same policy and announce it for people who walk on the lava.
@krisushi13 жыл бұрын
In Australia with our bushfires, if you don't keep your property clear of rubbish and overgrown trees etc., the firefighters will not attempt to save it but go into the next. We don't have mandatory evacuation but if you chose to stay and fight the fire, you will do so at your own peril. Many died during the Black Summer Bushfires of 2019/20 doing just this. The only issue I have with letting idiots play with lava, is that they are forcing their immanent deaths on innocent viewers at the site. There aren't spectators to those fighting to protect their homes and we learn of the fact afterwards. It's a different story here. I know what happens when humans come in contact with volcanic output and no-one should be forced to see this. I wish it was as easy as letting them learn for themselves but at what expense?
@shiraz17363 жыл бұрын
You don’t save someone who does that. Just stand back and appreciate the level of stupidity you are fortunate enough to witness in person.

Same in Australia. But all that will happen with the volcano is they will close it off to the public, so he ruins it for everybody, very bloody selfish. We got drones these days, no excuse for that behaviour, he knew it was wrong, but off he selfishly went.
@TrainLordJC3 жыл бұрын
@@zed4225 I agree with your comment. I can't imagine a genuine geologist would be silly enough to climb up a volcano as active as this one. Seems to me that the idiot (and the world has plenty of them!) just wanted a selfie to put on his instagram! He was extremely lucky to have gotten off that flowing lava without hurting himself and if that lava flow had not divided where he was it could have been a different story. And if he had been caught by the lava and been a fatality then the people of authority would certainly restrict access to this wonderful act of nature that we (wherever we are) are so fortunate to witness. My passion for geology grows more deeply as I have been watching on a daily basis since the beginning of this volcanic outpouring to see how mother earth continues to fascinate us.

Having watched this with everyone else for months now, I'm not sure it is fair to say that this is turning into a shield volcano. Although the history of this volcanic field around Fagradalsfjall is relatively infrequent, it seems to have a lot in common with volcanoes like Kilauea in Hawai'i. I would actually argue that the volcano already is a shield volcano, but has been deeply incised by glaciers over its history. Natthagi is a classic glacial valley in this respect. I would go so far as to say if Hawai'i were as far north as Iceland, and had glaciers, Kilauea might not look too different from the plateau surrounding Fagradalsfjall.

10:15 A volcano will kill a geologist with the same speed and brutality as it would kill a bus driver. When Mt St Helens erupted in 1980, geologist David Johnson was one of the first people killed. He just had time to key his radio and say, "Vancouver, Vancouver, this is it" By the time they asked "What is it" he was already dead, and of course they could see it from where they were. He was calling Vancouver WA, not Vancouver BC. Vancouver sits on the north side of the Columbia River, across from Portland.

I find it fascinating how quickly the lava changes direction. It’s like the volcano believes in an equal share for everyone. Since the big spill into Natthagi, it seems it’s decided to redirect lava towards the northern end of Meradalir. Of course it will come back again. The volcano itself seems stable but I still expect a wall to collapse or for the lava to find a weakness in it, given the volcano is now in a continuous state of eruption.

@ikluft3 жыл бұрын
Don't count them out. The volcano just does the same thing, basically following gravity while building a shallow-sloped shield volcano. The engineers have been learning from the experiments so far. They also have more motivation on this new barrier because, as the video shows, the town of Grindavik is potentially downstream if it goes the wrong way (west) over that ridge.

Bloody heck Pipe and major sized water pumps to allow some ofthe lava to chill out✌🏽 It has been utilized before. Build a 4 or 5m retaining wall, then flood with seawater…. Then spray/flood 0.5km to km above retainer & pond area, then build new barrier and repeat ✌🏽

if people take risks on the lava field and get hurt, they harm both themselves and potentially the rescue team, and it costs a lot of effort, and yes money as well.

Greetings from California. Great coverage from the beginning. Even though other photographers have done a marvelous job capturing ever aspect of your country's newest newborn volcano, RVT Newscasts goes into great detail of the geological reason this volcano is unique. I even believe you had the very first drone shots, then a lot of copy cats followed. Just one thing when you say you smell like a brush fire. That's humorous to me! That's moss burning. Come to California during one of our many 'real' brush fire fire seasons when we are burning. Keep up the tremendous effort you take to bring such detailed information to the pubic.

Strangely, in the Hawaiian Volcanos National Park, people were allowed to go out and hike around, at their own risk. I remember that I had to tell my kids to feel the surface before they walked on it because they could not tell just by looking...My teenage daughter said that it was a good thing I warned her because she would have walked on the hot stuff. So you can go, but you have to the common sense and going as high up as he did certainly seemed crazy to me!
