RF 100-500 + 1.4x Teleconverter Extender Green Heron Canon R7 Bird Photography

I use the RF 1.4x extender teleconverter with my RF 100-500 lens and Canon EOS R7 camera to make photographs of Green Heron at Rhea County Wetlands. It was a fun morning!

Great timing for me - Phil as I am about to buy a 1.4 extender that I want to use on the 100-500. I have a 2X RF extender, but I find it hard to use on the 100-500 and I think that my photographs are more blurry with the 2X extender on RF100-500. However - I have used the 2X extender on my RF800/F11 with succes, so I am convinced that the 1.4x extender can be used on the RF800/F11 as well. I am using the R7, so the different combinations can give me a high flexibility in reach. Thanks again for another great video Phil. Lovely shots; thanks for sharing. Based on your earlier video - where Heather was using the R7, RF100-500, and 1.4x TC - I decided to add the TC to my R7/ RF100-500. And I am very happy with the results, not to mention the versatility. Most TC reviews restrict their attention to full frame cameras, but I have been impressed by both the AF responsiveness and image quality on the R7, presumably a reflection of the high-quality lens optics and R7 sensor resolution. Keep up the good work.

I have neither the 1.4x or the 800mm. still a tough decision. I think the 800mm would ultimately be better when you know you are looking at long focal lengths but takes a lot more bag space when traveling. So you video helped a lot. I think for price and travel space (plus minimal focal distance) i will go with the 1.4x. thx again for this video and the comment at the end on your opinion.

The 800 f/11 in its collapsed state takes the same amount of space as the 100-500 with TC installed because with the TC installed, you can zoom back further than 300mm.

The consensus seems to run that cropping with the 100-500 is every bit as good as using the teleconvertor. I will get the teleconvertor if I can justify it (I have the R5), but I'm not going to put $500 if there is no benefit.

I enjoy the same lens hood as you on the 100-500. So much more compact than that supplied with the lens. Always amazed with the sharpness you get with the 100-500 and 800 with such slow shutter speeds.

Beautiful shots of the Green Heron Phil. You certainly got some extra reach with that 1.4 tele. How was the sharpness when the lens and tele was combined? Close up macroof that bees was incredible. Great video, well done 🙏

Comment toward the end about the 10-500 with 1.4X vs the RF 800 f11 that maybe you like that one more. Sounds like the RF 800 f11 is very near the 100-500 with 1.4X tele.

The 1.4 TC works on both the 600 and 800 f/11 lenses but you'll be stuck at f/16. It works also on the 600 f/4 lens, with that setup you would have a maximum aperture of f/5.6.

@@mattgericke4537 it’s OK, it’s not great in my opinion. Also I learned that it adds a color cast to your images that I thought was very surprising when I did my test chart video a while back

I could be wrong but it looks like the canon takes a little bit crisper image than the sony 6700. Please tell me if you can agree.

I do think that in my experience the Canon 100-500 seems to be a little bit sharper than the Sony 200-600.
