avinuvenkis yes CBE intercity, kovai express and vaigai express are fastest intercity type trains. Among these 3 kovai express has a slight edge over other 2.

Indian trains are wayyy wayyy underpowered. One loco should not be hauling more than 12 average coaches (10 North American/Japanese coaches). Even that EMU has somewhat slow acceleration for locomotive passenger trains in the developed world (which is already giving India an unfair advantage). That Intercity Express accelerates even more slowly than a 100+ wagon North American/Aussie train!

Stupid and poor planning. There is no justice to either side..You have 18+ coaches for the inter city and it is speed is curbed...and the local which is catering to quick and speed commuters..is also hampered. This is a bad-product mix -- at the end of the day.. it is a waste of resources, and importantly wasting the commuters time...disgusting...!!

Not so bad as to be disgusting sir. A train is half a kilometer long and it takes time to pass over points---similar to long trucks with 20-30 wheels going over a speed-breaker on roads. Speed cannot be more than 20-25 KMPH over these heavily pointed tracks as otherwise the wheels will jump. Also it is because the outstation trains may have to cross 4-5 pairs of tracks in order to reach the allotted platform there will be sharp turns. This together with the "piece-wise linear structure" of a train does not allow one to increase speed beyond 20 KMPH or so. The EMU going sloe and getting stopped may be due to platform not being clear in Central Suburban. In all cases the traffic controllers moto is to bring the train as close as possible to the point beyond which it is sort of not possible to move further. This explains why the CBE intercity was blasting past Villiwakkam only to slow down near/in BBQ.
