If you're seeking feedback... and forgive me, game audio is my profession... I'd dial down the pitch wobble/tremolo. It's a bit too much. If you can control the speed of it, make it MUCH slower and reduce the depth of the pitch change so it drifts very slightly out of tune over a longer period of time. It's too noticeable right now. The lowpass filter is a bit too heavy handed. Those old TVs were muffled but not quite that much. I'd raise it a bit, but not too much. It might also be worth pushing the mids a bit, maybe around 600-1000Hz, as a lot of older TV speakers were very mid-forward. This is all based on listening to the video. I'm at work and don't have time to try this on a game right now. But I hope this is useful. This is a very cool project to dig into, excited to try it out!

@@markkilborn512 thanks so much. I truly appreciate the feedback. I'll have a tweak tonight using your feedback and hopefully it'll help. Admittedly I've over exaggerated the sound muffledness, more as a proof on concept rather than anything hugely accurate

Agreed on the tremolo: it sounds like audio from a bad tape recording instead of audio from a soundchip going through mediocre speakers. It doesn't sound natural in this iteration. Edit: The updated presets sound a lot better to me.

Thank you for this mod and thank you to the comment about the drift/wobble in the pitch; it seems that that LFO is too intense making it sound more like a VHS and not as a TV live. I'd like to add that these old TVs were also resonant in the lower mids; adding a feedback in that frequency or a drive that concentrates in that range of the spectrum could mean that you don't even have to have a filter because the drive would neglect the highs and the lows making it sound boxy. Thanks again for your work.

In Sega Genesis/Megadrive case we need more options to accurately emulate the diferent hardware revisions disctinctive sound. I wonder if all this mono sound simulations have been compared to the real hardware pluged with RF swithes to different tvs- Not all tvs are equal in how they process RF and composite video signals and that is also true for sound.
@CyberLabStudio2 ай бұрын
There actually has been a lot of work done in this regard and the results of it are actually built into some of the Genesis/Megadrive cores. You might have to search for it but there are threads which talk about this and how best to set the LPF and other Core Options to simulate the different hardware revisions. This is how I've been playing for a while now. For arcade games, I know there's already low-pass audio filter available. Note that I'm not trying to discredit @RetroCrisis's work, just answering the question that this is an area that has room for improvement and is often overlooked but it definitely has received at least some serious attention in the past especially when it came to matching the authenticity of Genesis/Megadrive audio.

Sound from retro consoles never had the slight variations in pitch that can be heard in this demo video. If you recorded them to tape and then playback, then yes, of course. That's part of the distortions you can encounter in analog tape media. But this, in my opinion, is a NO NO.

Why is the pitch warbling?!! That was a characteristic of VHS but not of a direct signal from a console. It's immediately distracting and annoying and nothing like what it should sound like.
