Hey mate. Is the rf160 any reliable and how long have u had it for. Also have you had to replace any of the parts
@DarrenMcKinney13 жыл бұрын
Hi Alfie, I’ve had this bike for a bit over a year now and it has been very reliable. I haven’t had anything break or wear out on it but the main let down with the bike is the carb and getting it setup right. It can be difficult as it’s a cheaper carb but apart from that I’ve had no issues even with putting over 500 miles on the road on her

Hi there i have a couple of questions first of all what bike would you recommend more and second of all would you say there is much difference between the RF160 and the RF140 thanks for your time.
@DarrenMcKinney13 жыл бұрын
Hi, in my personal opinion if you are doing off road only I like the KMXR better but for the road I like the RF as the seat is a little more comfortable and the position of the handle bars I like too. They are both great bikes and I would honestly recommend either but if I just had to choose it would be the RF. As for the 140 or the 160 there is a difference but not a massive one. If you are not worried about all out power, want to save a few quid and just want to have fun the 140 would be fine but they are both great engines

@DarrenMcKinney12 жыл бұрын
Yes they can be a bit of a pain to get setup right. You will need to start by setting the idle mixture screw at the front of the carb to 2 turns out and set the idle speed screw so that it is lifting the cylinder inside the carb ever so slightly. You can see this by removing the air filter. If it still refuses to start keep turning the idle mixture screw a 1/4 turn at a time to see if this helps. It will take a lot of adjusting and I know it’s no fun but it’s the only way to get them setup

@DarrenMcKinney12 жыл бұрын
Im not just 100% sure of what comment you mean but the main thing I had to do with the carbs on these bikes was get them setup so it would start hot and cold. They were an absolute pain to start with and with no real equipment to test or setup the carbs it took a lot of fettling but I eventually got it sorted. Main problem was getting the idle jet set just right but I found that around the 1 and 3/4 to 2 turns out mark was fairly close

In my own personal opinion I would pick the rf160. I found it to be more reliable and easier to work around the carb (which is obviously important when it comes to racing) and in general I just like the way the RF160’s engine puts down the power. I hope this helps.

@DarrenMcKinney13 жыл бұрын
Hi Helen, thanks for the question. Speaking from experience I would recommend a used 50cc scooter or moped over the like of a pit bike as you wont have to go through the process of registering it for the road. Plus you will have lights which will allow you more hours on the saddle because once you get your CBT you'll just want to hop on and go for hours. Then once you are 17 you can move up to a 125cc which will open a lot more doors for you. The likes of a little rf125 pit bike all the way up to 125cc cruisers and sports bikes, whichever style of bike you prefer and feel more comfortable on. I hope this helps and welcome to the world of motorcycles and stay safe on the roads.

Yeah sure i remember. Mines is just over 2 turns out. You will find if it’s hard to start cold keep it on the rich side and if it’s hard to start hot make it a bit leaner. It’s a delicate balancing act but it will generally be around the 2 turns out. If it’s brand new just check the valve clearances too as I found one of mine was too tight. I think the inlet is 0.1 mm and the exhaust is 0.15mm. Also if it’s hard to start in general I find screwing up the idle helps too

Check the idle screw at the bottom front of the carb. It should be around 2 to 2 and quarter turns out. Reset it by screwing it all the way in until it stops (don’t use much force) and then screw it out the 2 turns or so to see how it runs then
@nickcompton47723 жыл бұрын
what are your idle and air screw positions ? on the kmx
@DarrenMcKinney13 жыл бұрын
The air screw is pretty much impossible to access with the carb on. It’s at the very front on the bottom of the carb. If you look up in you may just about see it. I have mine set to 2 turns out. As for the idle screw on the Kmxr you will want to remove the screws from the cdi or ignition unit on the right hand side of the bike. You will then get access to the idle screw when it is moved to one side.

I have my air/fuel screw set to 2 turns out and as for the idle get the bike warmed up then just set the idle to an idle the bike seems happy at. I leave mine a little high as it leaves the bike less likely to stall

Quick question how long did it take to start your rf160, just got mine and it takes a while to start and it kicks back a lot, I got it started yesterday and it wouldn’t idle so I turned the idle screw and now it does idle but it takes a while to start
@DarrenMcKinney13 жыл бұрын
It took quite a while the first time. Then can be a pain to start unless they are set up just so. The kick back is usually caused by a mixture of low idle and timing too far advanced but mainly the timing too far advanced. If you have access to some power tools you can remove the gear lever and flywheel cover on the left hand side of the bike and you will see the sensor. It is not adjustable but if you can slot the holes and move the sensor as far up as possible this will retard the timing and should cure the kick back. Keep around a 1mm to 1.5mm gap between the pick up on the flywheel (the little square) and the sensor. This can be hard to do on the bike but you can easily remove the sensor bracket from the sensor to do it off the bike. I hope this helps

The kickback is caused by kicking it wrong, you must go just past top dead centre with the kickstart, also you shouldn't be throttling it when starting that will increase kickback ditch the standard carbs on these things you'll never get it to run right the pilot jet is what you need to go up on if it's hard to start they should start one kick with no throttle
