I've had several SCART switches over the years. Unless it has a mains power booster, I wouldn't even bother using one as it culminates in a much darker picture.

TehMonitor Thanks! Yeah, that was the main thing we set out to do. While there is a lot of info out there, most of it is not put together in the most easy to understand way. With these videos, we wanted to present this information in a way that anyone can do it. Its a fairly dense topic, and when spending that kind of money you want to get as much info as possible.

Don't want to step on any toes, but definitely yes. Almost any input is accepted except some obscure digital formats (some need adapters). The only downside to composite (rca) is that your input isn't great, so your output wont be great. It works on the rubbish in, rubbish out principle. Will look loads better than just plugging in it though.

You can get scart switchers easy in the UK for many years, even today. They are also cheap. You can get them through Ebay or Amazon if you order internationally. It's not recommended to keep switching/swapping scart cables each time you play a different system. The scart cables will wear out very quickly, so you end up buying more cables.

Enviable setups! Wow! I'm using an older model of the Extron MPS I got off ebay for $20 as a switch. It handles 12 devices (4 VGA, 4 Composite, and 4 S-Video). If you're not afraid of making custom adapters, you can use it to switch SCART through the VGA ports or you can look at Extron's other switches, but you have to get lucky to find them unless you're a dealer.

I've got about 15 homecomputers and consoles attached to 4 Bandridge 5-way scart switchboxes linked to each other. No interference whatsoever, despite some bad behaving systems. I use these quite a while now, I've got them for about €35. These switchboxes automatically detect input and switch accordingly. I've got also a version that mechanically switches for about €20. I highly recommend the automatically switching version if you have a collection. Just turning your console on without any fuss will make you smile every time.

Some people tend to forget that the hi-res mode with expansion pack games for N64 will support 480i just like the Dreamcast. There are even a few PS1 and Sega Saturn games with 480i like Tekken 3, Tobal 1 and 2, Decathlon and Virtua Fighter 2 (the 60 fps games). So RGB to Compenent can be really nice on an EDTV (480p capable CRT) or an HDTV CRT that goes up to 1080i, but converts 240p and 480i into a stable 480p with little to almost no lag. PS2, Dreamcast, Xbox, Gamecube (even more with 480p mode from the consoles settings) look great on HD CRTs like a Toshiba HF series and Sony FD series from 2002-2006. I am using a Toshiba HF72 36" for those consoles with component video. I use my 2003 Sony Trinitron SD CRT for all of my classic games consoles, also through component video (S-video with my Turbo Duo and N64).

If you are still looking for a scart switcher you may want to consider the Bandridge SCART Auto Switchbox ( VSB7735 ) It's the one i use on the mini. It looks a little bulky but it has most of the properties you desire from a scart switch. It has five SCART inputs and one output. All inputs are isolated from each other so no interference. You have two versions of this switch. The purely manual and the automatic+manual version. Using the automatic+manual version the scart switch automatically switches input signals but also allows you to manually select an input using a button on the front. It's externally powered using 12V/500mAh.

Coury, another reason you should have your Wii hooked up is that it can play your Gamecube games at 480p. It is true that a 480p GC game through Wii component cables have *slightly* less detail and color clarity than through a Gamecube component cable, but considering the massive cost of GC component cables, the games through Wii component cables are perfectly acceptable for the price. Much less expensive, and almost as good. True, you won't be able to use the Game Boy Player with it, and until you get Gamecube component cables, that's really all the Gamecube will be good for, but why play at s-video when a simple solution is right there, not being hooked up?

As far as SCART switches go, I have the Hama 100S and have had no issues at all with any of my systems (and you know there are quite a few of those), but it's only good for 3 consoles at a time. The Bandbridge seems to be the new gold standard, though. I was considering one until I read about your experiences with it in these comments. So weird. I'm going to wait until that gets sorted.

Hey, My Life in Gaming. You mention using an AV Receiver as a HDMI-hub of sorts. Some/most of these AV Receivers feature its own upscaling device. I, myself, own an older Harman/Kardon AV receiver. It features the DCDi by Faroudja. There's not a lot of information (?) regarding this processor, atleast not that I've found, and what I've read is that it is good (at least at upscaling video). How well does this DCDi Faroudja, or any AV receiver, in upscaling games compared to the markets best (RetroTink 5X, OSSC, etc.) ? Thanks for the answer!

I have a powered 4 port RGB SCART auto switcher that switches between my PS2, SNES, Mega Drive II and N64. The SCART switcher just detects which console is powered last and switches to it, even though my N64 is not RGB modded and only outputting PAL composite video it still works fine. I have also noticed that it filters the signal before it reaches my computer monitor so output from the Mega Drive looks clean. The switcher was bought 5 years ago and seems to be somewhat rare.

The bandridge automatic 5 to 1 (or 4 to 2 actually) is an excelent scart switcher. I use two of them daisy-chained using two outputs (tv and capture card) and there is no quality loss or color difference. Plus you get the convenience of auto-switching, with both RGB and analog composite.

I don't know if they are still available, but the company "Madcatz" produced a scart switch-box a few years ago. I purchased a few at the time. They are all black with clear "bumper" ends and gaming\Madcatz logos. It reads Item:6013 , RGB System Scart Selector on the bottom and has 4 inputs\ 1 output ( all scart obviously ) with a small 4 position sliding switch on the front. They were specifically designed for gaming and are the only type that I know of. Standard types can at best cause interference. Worst case scenario, slight differences in pinouts can fry a system! I have been using these Madcatz switchers to switch between my 13 different systems for years now with no degradation of picture or crosstalk and advise their products if found.

Great video series, guys. I recently took the plunge on getting a Framemeister recently, and did have a couple of questions: (1) Are you guys going to go into the newer updates on the Framemeister? It looks like Micomsoft recently updated the firmware to 2.00, and the JunkerHQ wiki doesn't have any information past 1.10. (2) Both of you are dealing with Japanese devices, which generally use a 100V adapter, while US power sockets generally output 110V or 120V. This isn't just the Framemeister - the A/V Famicom Jr. and the PC Engine Duo-R also have this issue. Are you using step-up/step-down transformers to cover the issue, or do you have adapters that can receive voltages from the gamut (e.g. 100V-240V)? I think my Framemeister came with an adapter that does this.
@mylifeingaming
@mylifeingaming 9 жыл бұрын
[Coury] I've updated to the 2.0 firmware and really like it. I haven't gotten too deeply into it yet though. I'm probably going to wait for the experts to make profiles instead of making my own. In order to make this series the best source of info on the subject (in video form), we intend on doing point updates for episodes that might need them. For instance I can see us doing a 301.1 for this down the road. "Patches," if you will. The voltage issue, we're not currently using anything - but my PC engine uses a U.S. Genesis 2 ac adapter so I'm safe with that. I'm not sure what Try uses on his AV Famicom though. We're both also using our stock ac adapters for the framemeister. I've looked into getting an correct US adapter for mine, but haven't. I heard that newer units include a variable voltage adapter that solves this problem. I wonder if they sell these official adapters by themselves...

Don't know if it's much help to anyone stateside, but here in the UK I've got a B-Tech Quattro scart switch which is pretty awesome. It's active, so it boosts the RGB signal rather than degrading it and it's a nice looking set top box which wouldn't look out of place sat next to a bunch of hi-fi gear. Only cost me £10 off eBay, used of course. They stopped making them around the turn of the century. I've got the BT941 model which is great, but I'd like to get the BT945 model because it's a bit better (or so I've read).

[Try4ce] Keep in mind that the Framemeister is discontinued, although I believe stock still remains. For analog consoles, we use devices like the OSSC and RetroTINK-2X more often these days, but the Framemeister does have an edge in 480i deinterlacing. As for the HDMI inputs, I don't quite trust them. Even when set for HDMI passthrough, I think it screws up with some sort of color conversion, so I prefer to not use it for HDMI input. There is no device in this retro gaming scene that yet supports 4K.

@@mylifeingaming Thank you for such a quick and detailed reply. I'm still only a few episodes into this MC. Given how much things have changed since you started making these videos, I assume the future ones go over these new options? In terms of the HDMI output, I was surprised in this video to see that both setups ran the modern consoles through the framemeister as I assumed that would sacrifice some quality in the passthrough. Given the changes with 4k, have you guys changed these setups and do you ever detail out the new setups you're using?

[Try4ce] Yes, there's a later setup video, and that too is out of date. Coury has moved twice since this first setup video. We're both working on new setup videos but they'll still be several months away. The most accurate video actually would be our video about retro and modern gaming on 4K TVs, which has relatively up to date info on the OSSC. I'm not sure if going in order is really the right way to tackle this series at this point since the early videos are really really old.

[Try4ce] I'd start with the Modern and Retro Gaming on 4K TVs episode, and look at various others from there, depending on what systems you're interested in. Things change a lot more in this scene than you'd think, so sometimes things get outdated! Doesn't mean the options presented in the videos are bad now, but it doesn't present ALL options.

+My Life in Gaming Id recommend getting a cheap mvs board, a supergun board from arcadeforge and hookup a Pc power supply to it. It has the neo geo controller ports, scart female connector and has the same 4 pin molex connector that IDE hard drives used to have. Sure, you need something to mount it on, but its gonna be a lot cheaper than an Omega.

Are you guys experienced with PEXHDCAP? I'm pretty happy with 1-chip Super Famicom via RGB through Sync Strike to PEXHDCAP if you judge by video quality, but I have problems with this 7-pin miniDIN connector that's supposed to be the audio input via breakout cable. It's just that apparently some common composite + 2x audio RCA to 7-pin doesn't transfer audio at all. The card used to come with a component + 2 RCA audio breakout cable but those are in my experience impossible to find online (apparently any kind of component + 2 audio cables) so I thought to ask you as RGB/retro gaming/capturing experts if you have some tips or ideas, generally knowledge about these connections and where to get a suitable cable. Thanks in advance!

ShogunGin0 [Coury] We've definitely gone back and forth between the two. Try actually uses SCART for his, but I use Component with mine. A downfall of using SCART is that 480p is out of the question without having to resort to additional equipment. On the other hand, Component introduces a little bit of noise that you can see on certain colors - you can see it present here on the solid gray color kzbin.info/www/bejne/i6vdqKiCecSUZqcm54s When we get to the PS2 system specific, we'll absolutely get deeper into it, but thats a ways off at this point.

You guys should look into the Hana (or is it Hanna?) SCART switcher sold on Ebay. It is very cheap and actually has excellent reviews. I have one myself and I cannot see any noticeable picture quality loss or interference at all due to it being completely mechanical and is just a straight pass through unit. It is definitely the best budget switcher out there bar none. The only drawback is that it only has 3 SCART inputs, but it's certainly better than nothing.

i was watching adam koralik's video once and seemed like he was using a SCART switch strip. is there a reason you guys aren't using that apparatus? is it due to discrepancy in amperage to each of their respectable scart connections or will it become a detriment to the image quality? i apologize if i sound like a noob in this. i am just getting into retro gaming (I actually do have a saturn that i would love to scart). Another question is, concerning the original xbox, would i get better screen fidelity with hooking up the component cable directly to my sony LED or would an upscaler like the framemeister enhance the image quality? Honestly, the component hook up to my LED TV from the original xbox looks like poo (blurry) and was wondering if there's a way to make the image quality better. I love your shows and you guys kick ass. keep it up.

[Try4ce] While I feel the benefit for systems like Xbox is not nearly as great as it is for older lower res consoles, there is definitely some benefit to be had. Though it's compressed somewhat by KZbin, perhaps my Grabbed by the Ghoulies episode will give you an idea. As for SCART switchers, we've actually been using some for a while. I have an older GSCART, and a newer, more developed version will be available soon I believe. I'm happy with it, but u was reluctant to recommend it for a while, partly due to limited availability (it was put together by one guy), and that I did have some issues at first that I eventually sorted out with better suited cables. Coury uses two Bandridge switchers, which are somewhat popular and cheap, but they have some issues... some quality loss, but it also is designed incorrectly... small voltage for example can be output to your consoles through it. When I tried it, my Genesis LED lit up when I turned on my Famicom! Certain consoles also didn't work in port 5. However, these issues can be fixed by opening the unit and slicing a particular trace on the board.

Great video. Good info and crisp images. One question I have though. You explain that when using scart the audio follows in the same cable. Which is good since I´m most used to scart. But when it comes to component. How do you hook up audio from the console into the frame meister? Or do you simply have a multiple inputs -> one output that comes with audio? Since from what I see on the D-terminal to component cable you don´t have any audio cables there. So how did you hook up the audio? Curious about this since I´ve seen a lot of splitters or switches, but most of them don´t have any audio input/output. Could you help a poor little guy out here explaining all of this audio thing with component?

[Try4ce] I think at the time we did this video, we didn't have our Dreamcasts setup the way we want. We now use VGA boxes called "Toro" by Behar Bros. They pull VGA from the system, and you can then connect either a VGA cable to the box, or a SCART cable, but the cool trick is that the SCART will carry 480p. If you use SCART on Dreamcast without a box, it won't be 480p. This lets us integrate it into our setups much more easily than regular VGA, but we still get 480p.

Yes, Behar Bros do make the top notch DC VGA-boxes, indeed ;) Earlier, I didn't have a problem with scart (RGB) consoles. My projector (Panasonic AE900) had an Scart-socket and the picture quality was really enough for me. I upgraded to AE4000 and did order that cheap scart to HDMI-scaler from ebay... Not too happy about it. I will maybe try Scart (RGB) to component box and after that (in the end) I will get Framemeister... Eventually ;) 25 consoles now (on somewhere they mentioned, that Atari never made an RGB-scart lead for Jaguar. Not true, as I have the official one xD The lead is REALLY heavy duty!) and maybe a few coming later ;)

It's funny you show that HDMI splitter there cause it looks very similar to the SCART-to-HDMI adapter I currently use. Also why use an HDMI splitter to begin with? What is the benefit of it? Is there a good place to find Component for the original Xbox? Also it will be nice to see some links for the switchers you use in the description since the idea of having an HDMI and Component splitters for my consoles will be ideal for me. Thank you for the video guys! :)
@mylifeingaming
@mylifeingaming 10 жыл бұрын
[Try4ce] There are a few benefits to the splitter. First (and this was totally not part of the plan, just a happy accident), the particular one we use (which we bought on eBay, and the seller doesn't seem to have them anymore) strips HDCP copy protection... this is meant to keep people from illegally copying movies, but it's frustrating because it also prevents HDMI capture from the PS3 (and until it was patched, PS4). Thankfully, we don't even have to think about that with our splitters. The other reason is to send a line to both the TV and the capture card. I don't want to play the game while looking at the recording window on my computer, because not only is the quality slightly worse, but there's also noticeable lag that I don't want to deal with. The reason I use two splitters is to bypass the Framemeister for HD systems. While I route the HD systems through the Framemeister so that they appear on my capture card, I don't want to have to turn on the Framemeister every time I play an HD system, if I'm not recording or streaming the footage. You can have the Framemeister set to simply pass the HDMI signals through without processing them, and this is what Coury does. His setup is a little simpler in that regard, but I just like doing things the way I have them, for now. Coury would also know more about where to direct you to for Xbox component cables and switch boxes.

***** [Coury] hey sure thing! When it comes to Component switchers you'll probably be good with just about anything. For anything above S-video, I prefer to use powered ones in case there is a problem with signal strength. The one I use is by a company called IMPACT. They have one like this www.amazon.com/C2G-40324-Component-Performance-Selector/dp/B000AM3U2I/ Thats not the exact one I use though - mine was a bit more expensive because it outputs to two destinations at once - a feature that I use to streamline playing games and outputting the VHS "How to Beat" videos we do. The two outputs is purely for convenience of not having to get down and pull wires. This is the HDMI splitter I use www.amazon.com/Kinivo-501BN-Premium-wireless-adapter/dp/B0049SCB2Y/ Xbox component cables are cheap and easy to find. You can get any off of amazon. First or third party ones. The ones I got were 7 dollars. Also, I saw a comment though i can't find it now about the Duo. This is the seller that I bought from, but you really gotta watch his account - he only puts up one unit every few days and they generally go quick www.ebay.com/usr/doujindance

***** Thanks for the elaborated response! The HDMI splitter you put looks remarkably different than Try's, and is very similar to the HDMI-SCART adapter that I use. I also had very bad luck with those MadCatz component cables so I am not sure if investing in those cheap cables will do the trick.

Good morning, I have a sega saturn japanese victor, I am trying to buy a solaris framemeister and the official JP21 RGB cable from Japan (hss-0109) for use on my modern TV. However, television does not have a good sound. That's why I bought a high quality sound system, is it possible to connect this sound system to the framemeister? So that the image comes out on the TV with the JP21 RGB cable and the sound is output through the sound system using another cable. Is this possible? What options do I have for the image to be output on a TV (using JP21 RGB) and the sound output through a sound system? If possible, what cables would you need? Thanks for your comments. regards
