I agree with your view on digital foundry. While I enjoy DF videos there’s a strong emphasis that smooth frame rate, frame gen and dlss, might make the gameplay better. It doesn’t. DF also gave starwars outlaws a very favourable opinion. Ubisoft Leamington just shut down. Totally agree with you on digital foundry.

All other things being equal, I don't see how a game that has good performance isn't better than the same game but with frame-rate drops or stutters. Also Star Wars Outlaws was developed at Massive, not Leamington.

@@SteelSkin667 Mostly because a lot of the time the Frame Rate and the Resolutions are the main focus. Specially with a lot of AAA games a Larger focus on that then Game play and even story has been a Trend in a LOT of titles. Even a lot of the Talking points about such games are on Frame Rate and resolutions. Those elements are Good. But Because so much is placed on those. A LOT of ball Droping occurs on bugs and even game play elements. Not to mention it Ballons the Size. Good Example. TOTK was about 20 GB for the ENITRE game. Black Myth Wukong was 130 GB.

Also the size of a game has generally nothing to do with either rendering resolution or frame rate, case in point both of the game you cited suffer from poor performance and image quality on consoles.

Also, being that it doesn’t have to be cutting edge in terms of graphical Fidelity these developers don’t have to worry about pushing these games to the limit they can focus on just making the games look great I would assume a game that’s not pushing the limits of today’s cutting edge graphics would be much easier to develop for vs a game that’s on the cutting edge of todays standards and has to meet a certain criteria visually and frame-rate wise you know. Like oh we’ve built games in the past with these hardware limitations and specs before we already know how to maximize visuals and frame rate vs a game these days they are basically learning as the go

Nvidia SOC in the Switch 2 is the most heavy customised & modern processor yet that Nintendo told Nvidia to develop. It's a monster for 10 watt device. You know right Switch 1 AAA gameplay cost below 10 watt of electricity power for all of processor, ram, display, speaker etc combined. Very efficient gaming device, same with Switch 2

For an analogy most probably would understand at some level, I compare the way Nintendo has chosen to operate VS SONY and Microsoft like traders on the stock market. You have your day traders who have to constantly shift and change, always looking to make the quick buck and sometimes they strike it rich, sometimes they lose their entire a$$... Then you have the trader who focuses on long term investment. They stay the course with their long term plan through the ups and downs while making steady incremental growth. With SONY and Microsoft having this power battle, they've been the day traders. Mid-gen refreshes, pumping out broken and unoptimized games that lose them money etc. Nintendo has been more concerned with making quality games, making a SOLID but not over the top console, having it last longer until the next console is an ACTUAL improvement over the last at an affordable price to the consumer, and it's working so far...

Nintendo isn't a company that'll be held at another's mercy. It's just not in their DNA. That's why they're able to go left, when the entire industry goes right, then when everyone realizes that Nintendo was on to something, they Switch it up(pun not originally* intended) again. This is why, even with Nvidia onboard, we're seeing all these DLSS-like patents - including techniques and implementations that go far beyond just image upscaling, yet, this is Nintendo's own technology, likely the fruits of this long-term partnership with Nvidia. Nintendo has a history NOT ONLY deeply rooted in tradition and culture, but also in PRESERVING that culture. No one is going to stop them from being their own boss, and running things how they want it. Partnerships were burnt decades ago (during the whole PS1/Super CD debacle), and Nintendo has never put themselves in such a position again. I'm certain that they would have made one thing clear in every partnership since - "This is our product, we run this show!"

Speaking of that retro game example you used; I am really hoping that the DLSS in the Switch 2; does something to improve the image (and overall emulation quality) of all retro games that were released on the Switch 1; to where you can get something on par with what a retro tink or other retro upscaler, attempts to do. Aside from that; with all the other components, techniques and technologies that are being applied to THIS ITERATION of the Switch; it really sounds and feels like this thing is just gonna WORK and run very well across the board. You know how awesome it would feel to play say Final Fantasy 7 Remake (or any of the PS4 gen games) on this thing, with smaller file sizes, with little to NO loading times AND Look as good or a bit better than it did on the base PS4? This may be the generation and ONLY console that will literally feel like you are playing a game on a cartridge from the 90s era; where you just pop it in and it instantly loads and works! That really is going to feel like magic if it pulls it off in the manner I described.

I think cutting edge graphics is not as much as a selling point anymore as it used to be - developers went crazy on realistic look, ray tracing and how the hairs of caterpillars drop perfect shadows on leaves on a tree that is hundred miles away from you and not even visible because it is covered by a hyper realistic apple that perfectly reflects the lights of its environment, meanwhile the game itself is broken, buggy, dull, empty and boring. Nintendo's own AI upscaler sounds a lot like Sony's PSSR, which is quality-wise, slightly worse than DLSS performance mode according to Digital Foundry. I'd expect something like DLSS ultra performance mode quality from the Switch 2. Then again, if all the RTX cards are getting the new transformer model, which boosts the quality a lot, maybe Switch 2 will get it too.

Just thought of an idea for the speculated mouse like feature of the joy cons. I'm pretty sure it's a gimmick but Nintendo may have a pack in game for all switch 2 owners (like ps5 astro playroom). I can see some table top hockey puck game using the mouse feature. Or some cooking game mechanic to slice produce or something. Maybe they will include some kind of mat (or sold separately) that you can can glide the joy cons over.

You got to understand the upscaling technology in order to run. This is still a lot more powerful than the original or we would were just stuck with the Nintendo switch and added more software to it. My simple example mechanically is taking a Ford mustang and taking a 4-cylinder and putting in a 6 cylinder in it. Same car. More power so why redesign?

Games are not build for DLSS. DLSS is an upscaler, you turn it on and off. The created image is delivered from the gaming engine in a lower resolution and gets upscaled in real time in a second step. Building games "for" DLSS means, you don't care about the performance without DLSS. That's what happening on the PC side of things.
