I bought one back in the day. they were hard to find at first. I ultimately got rid of mine, but looking back I wish I'd held on to it. Alien Vs Predator, Iron Soldier, and especially Tempest 2000 are must haves in my opinion. The music and trippy visuals in Tempest 2000 were really incredible. I would play that game for hours on end, with the lights out and I had my tv sound output through my stereo system. Awesome stuff. I miss playing that game. And I liked the controllers too. I kept hoping Atari would make a version of Star Raiders for the system. that goofy keypad would have been great for a game like that.

(awesome but no I game music) Wolfenstein 3d is awesome Iron soldier 1 & 2 (2 is a repro) Etsy for $35 Tempest 2k. Awesome game Rayman Battlesphere gold (repo from Etsy $36) Defender 2k Atari karts. Repro Kasumi ninja. Meh Raiden. Excellent game Checkered flag. Controls way too sensitive Cybermorph

Raiden was the first game I played on my Jaguar and sparked my love of the series. If you're curious about other versions of Raiden, play the Raiden Project for PS1. It is the definitive version with both Raiden 1 and 2, and you also have the option to select remixed versions of the OST.

Atari Karts is a decent alternative to Super Mario Kart. Doom and Wolfenstein 3-D play well on the system due to the Jaguar's number pad allowing for quick switching of weapons, but there's no music in Doom (it's often called "Silent Doom").

We always pronounced the 'u' whenever any of my buddies talked about it: 'Jag-u-ar'. Of course we were just wrong, having only ever seen it written down. It was always a bit of a mythical beast (no pun intended) because no one I knew owned one! It was just legendary! People have put the Jag controller down for a long time, but I have used my Jag controllers since 93 and I have always found them, the original and Pro version, to be very comfortable and I don't think it looks that bad either though I am in the minority for sure. When coupled with the look of the system, I think they match very well. Does look a little better with an overlay on it in my opinion though.

Multimedia was a buzzword used in the early nineties for anything on CD-ROM. Marketing folks used it like the "bits" and "Information Superhighway".... I remember we had the end of year speech night (where parents came to see all the stuff their kids did all year, and listen to black robed teachers rabbit on about how great the school was to justify the cost), and the principal announced the school would be leading in computer education in the coming year as they purchased multi-media technology. That basically meant they purchased a CDROM drive with the Australian census CD. Everyone gave it a huge round of applause. One CD-ROM drive for 1500 kids, which not surprisingly went mostly unused.... So I assume since the jaguar was meant to originally ship with CD-ROM as standard, that the branding was reflecting that... I want a Jaguar now.... bugger there goes the budget...

@boblowes8 жыл бұрын
I've always had a soft spot for the Jaguar. It's by no means a terrible system, as some people like to make out, and it has some quality titles. The 'Multimedia' thing doesn't refer to the number of different media you could play on the Jaguar - back in the early-mid 90s, Multimedia was a computer buzzword. It usually referred to CD ROM software that would mix up different media. For example, a CD-ROM encyclopaedia could be "multimedia", as they could include text, music, video, and photographs - multiple forms of media. A "multimedia device" would be a machine which would hook up to your TV and enable to play back of this software (rather than have to deal with the complexity of a computer). So, systems like the Commodore Amiga CDTV and the Phillips CDi (another underrated system) were primarily marketed as "multimedia" devices, even though they were perfectly capable of playing games. Presumably, Atari were cognisant of the impending CD-ROMadd-on they were intending to release, which could be used to make the Jaguar akin to a more traditional "multimedia" device. The open circuit connector concept is familiar to the good old ZX Spectrum, from Sinclair Research, here in the UK. The Spectrum was a cheap, but phenomenally popular home computer, and it used the open edge connector concept for expansions. Flare Technologies (who designed the Jaguar) had previously all worked for Sinclair Research on computers like the ZX Spectrum, and it was a useful cost saving measure for that system. Doubtless, Flare felt the same thing with the Jaguar. You can get professionally made RGB to Scart Jaguar video cables from Retro Computer Shack on eBay. They're well worth it, and make the Jaguar's picture quality really shine. You'll need some sort of Scart converter if you're living outside Europe though. The Jaguar's library of games is surprisingly good. There's a lot of ports from the Commodore Amiga and Sega Mega Drive, but that's not surprising, as they were both based on the Motorola 68000 cpu, which was also found n the Jaguar and could be assigned as the CPU (I think the Jaguar's complicated architecture was a turn-off for many developers). And while they may be ports of existing 16bit titles, they do look nice on the Jaguar. Games like Alien vs Predator, Doom and Castle Wolfenstein show what could be done.
@RGT858 жыл бұрын
I honestly wish that they would have tried a little harder with Pitfall over the 16bit version. That could have been something special since Pitfall was so essential to the 2600 library you know?

Jag supports S-Video and Scart as well, so if you have the means to utilize them, definitely do so. But anyway, you forgot to explain what was up with the thing in the back middle of the system, is it some type of connector to use cables like the AV or Svideo or etc, since it only has RF out? Or is the RF Out just meaning that is just what it was bundled with? As far as the controller, it is a pretty good controller. I think the lack of shoulder buttons was bad and the 12 button thing as just plain weird, but the shape, D-pad, and main buttons all feel solid. If you're looking to see what games are worth picking up on the Jaguar, a good channel to check out is Brian Thomas Barnhart, he has some of the best Jaguar and other atari videos and doesn't have nearly the subs he should.

I too recently got a Jaguar. It was one of three systems I always wanted back in the 90s but never got (3DO and TG16 are the other two, though I did get a 3DO some years back, still need the TG16). Only have two games right now on the system, Ultra Vortek and Wolfenstein 3D. UV is a Mortal Kombat clone and it's quite fun if you're a fan of those types of fighters. Nowhere near the same league as MK, SF or other top fighters but as a clone, I have fun with it. Wolf3d is a great port. Its similar to the 3DO version. Hoping to get Tempest 2000 one of these days as well as checking out the Doom port (I'm always curious at how some games port over to different consoles).

It wasn't a marketing gimmick per say I have studied the Jaguar hardware and I did do a video on this, the Jaguar does have some graphical processors that are 64 bit and they work along with the 32 bit processors and all the game data gets sent through a 64 but bus pass way so it is complicated but there is evidence to suggest it is 64 bit! I got my Jaguar a couple years ago after I saw the AVGN episodes and I really like the system! I have the Jaguar CD but only a couple of the games but I do have a pretty decent Jaguar library including Alien VS Predator, Doom, Wolfenstein and even Rayman and Atari Karts! I have the Pro Controller and it does feel comfortable though I with the shoulder buttons felt abet better but minor complaint! I think had the Jaguar been able to get more talented 3rd party developers we could have scene what the Jaguar can really do and who knows maybe one day we will!

The Jaguar was great in my opinion that had several awesome titles. Iron Soldier, Defender 2000, the original Rayman, Tetris World, Ultra Vortek, Aliens Vs. Predator, Cybermorph, its own version of Pitfall The Mayan Adventure. Not to mention I also had the CD attachment but only 2 games for that Primal Rage and Dragon's Lair. Yeah those were ports of games that you could get on other consoles but I felt like I had to justify the purchase of buying a peripheral that eventually only had 11 games in it's life cycle. Still had fun with both systems though for what I could get out of them.

+RGT 85 Well.. hah... uh... It might not have been good per se... for me it was the only port of the game I had ever played outside of the arcade version, which I loved. It might just be a nostalgic thing.

Doom and W3D are great on the Jag and you should thoroughly enjoy them if you get them. If you ever happen to pick up a JagCD unit, Iron Soldier 2 is phenomenal in my opinion but the unit and that game will cost you an arm and a leg and more! Telegames did produce some limited edition cart versions of IS2 so you wouldn't need the JagCD, but those seem to be pretty rare nowadays.

I love the Sony WEGA brand of CRT TV. Goodwill's and Habitat for Humanties are filled with them and they are usually cheap. The picture is fantastic.

While i would tend to agree that Jaguar doesn't really welcome programmers all that much, it's probably neither here nor there. Dreamcast was a literal dream for developers, but nobody gave a fuck. In turn, Jaguar fans and proponents often say that it's still easier to deal with than Playstation 2... and they wouldn't necessarily be wrong. Well except for that huge performance headroom that Playstation 2 has for the basic tasks, while Jaguar doesn't. But really they are right: nobody in their right mind will put down their money to develop for a gaming system whose installed base is low, whose future is unclear, which comes from a basically failing company. In turn, to overcome the development issues on a difficult system, be it a Jaguar or PS2 or Saturn, all it takes is one or two crazy good engineers to do the complex parts and guide the overall structure of the project, so it's not that much of an impediment, it's not terribly expensive. If you can fire 4 mediocre developers, you can afford 2 wizards, pays off easily.

I think people overstate how difficult a console is to program for as a reason for it's demise sometimes. The Saturn had an entirely different life in Japan where it briefly outsold the PlayStation and it has a lot of high quality exclusive games that the West never saw another example is the PS3 once Sony was able to right the ship it got a ton of really great games despite being a pain to program for. But being difficult to program for can be a huge hindrance which will hurt a console as we saw with the N64 and Gamecube.

Most 3rd Party Devs just pooped out ports that ran on the M68000 in the Jaguar like the Genesis, it was never meant for this which is why some games looked poor.

I had one. I got it from a friend. Some one dumped one at my buddy's house. No one knew who's it was. I left my 2 Atari 2600's there (6 button, and a Jr) plus 50 games or so. Someone took all my Atari stuff. We were all so close...it's weird no one knew who took the 2600 stuff or who left the jag. So he felt bad and I got the Jaguar. Had 7 games. Zool, Theme Park Maker, and I forget what else. The power adapter then got busted. being 2004. I didn't know where to get one...didn't do online buying at all back then. I just threw it out. Man, was I dumb. HAHA the drake rip off was funny

Hey, cool channel! Plus, you know that the "blast processing" term is just a PR talking thing, right? There's no such feature inside Genesis. It's not a thing, it's basically a technique of programming so Genesis could handle some difficulties and they gave a name to it like it was some serious tweak. They spilled the therm because the clock speed on Genesis could be something that the console could do better than SNES. By the end of the day, it mean or does nothing. Scott Bayless is the name of the guy behind Blast Processing and he can be seen on some magazine ads at the time. I love marketing :D

Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, and AvP are the only games I would want on this system. It would be cool to have but space is limited and I just don't think I could justify owning this for 3 games.

needed more hotline bling and less T-shirt.. this system is not for me, but its good to see you can get enjoyment out of it... I remember seeing the controller in magazines and just being like, wtf?
@RGT858 жыл бұрын
lol dude hold the controller just once. It's like a glove.

It does look nice now, when I was younger though I just associated it all those older controllers that looked confusing. Its just too busy, knowing now that not all of them are used. I guess I would give it a go given the chance.

Alien Vs Predator should've been the pack in game, THIS alone would've installed a big enough user base to attract 3rd party developers who could've really worked toward nailing down the Jag's hardware architecture to develop new, more, and better games..., that would've in-turn sold even more consoles, motivated Atari to not kill it so soon, thus the Jaguar would've been saved..., The Jaguar was in fact a beast of a console that was unfortunately never tamed by developers..sad.
@eriksojka92096 жыл бұрын
The jag is a very powerful system. But the programmers did not utilize the system to it's full potential. But the game super burnout is the only game to make use of the 32 bit chip. Running at 60fps

I think it could have been way more successful to be honest. Shame how it ended up.
@chuckweicha15 жыл бұрын
When it first launched I saw it and my jaw dropped...it was potentially a nuke in a rock fight...but the developers could never catch up with the hardware the hardware itself was not designer friendly and it tanked...but it could have in it's ambition and scope changed the game
@LordMonkus8 жыл бұрын
The Jaguar if you get it for a cheap price with AVP is ok but overall its a pile of shit. I actually owned one back in the day and sold it off fairly soon after. AVP is the one good exclusive experience you can't find elsewhere, it really is a unique game with all 3 races playing totally different. I certainly wouldn't go out of my way to spend a bunch of money on it though.
