I never liked fuzz pedals until I reached the stage of playing when I learned how to play with my amp on a higher gain setting and use my volume knob to clean up. After I got used to that method of tone tweaking a fuzz pedal became a totally different effect. With the volume rolled down you get that subtle fuzz warmth with that edge. You can play full chords and the fuzz mostly stays out of the way unless you dig in hard. Then you can roll up for that Hendrix violin tone for the big single notes that bloom. Just like you guys illustrated so well in this video. Another important lesson I learned that also applies with other effects is subtly. Subtle use of chorus, flange and reverb also make them so much more useful.

Many years ago, we were throwing out one of those old school tacky big screen tv's with speakers built into it. Somehow I rigged my guitar up to it and got the nastiest most low fi sounding fuzz like distortion out of it. It was awesome. If you listen to the Mentally Ill's Gacy's Place, it sounded almost exactly like that. If you have Amplitube 5, there's a preset called "garbage champ" which basically nails that tone. It's so close, that I'm convinced the guy who made it must have been a fan of the Mentally Ill.

@@bryanherward4679 lol 😆 but I understand what you mean about Teles in general. Not quite a typical Tele, but my latest purchase (in February) was a 2021 Fender Telecaster Special Edition Custom. Even after a professional setup by my local luthier, it's my least favorite guitar to play of my three electrics. After a setup by the same luthier, my 2021 Epiphone LP Custom Koa stays in tune all day long, the intonation is dead on all the way up the fretboard, and it just plain feels RIGHT to my admittedly amateur hands. I wish I could enjoy playing the Tele more because the Seymour Duncans sound great. Hopefully once I find some more amp & tone combinations that I like for the Tele, it'll help break me out of the rut I'm in with it.

I started loving fuzz pedals about a year ago and i used to hate it before that. I started liking it after i discovered TC Electronic Rusty and Honey Fuzz. Now i own 5 fuzz pedals in total. The thing with fuzz is, it's a dark sound compared to an overdrive and it gets you time to find the right one. Also one more thing that i absolutely don't get with fuzz pedals is that some sound really weird. Sometimes i hear one and i think "there's no way that someone can make music with that sound" 😀

One of the things I've learned early on my guitar journey is that good "bedroom tone" does not always - almost never - translates to good live band sound. I've been wanting to add a fuzz pedal to my board. I like the sound of it, but I've never used one in a live settings and I feel like it caould be hard to manage in a live setting where you often need to cut through without getting louder than the singer / other instruments.

I believe it was either Josh Scott or one of Pedal Show guys that said that most fuzzes have a lot fewer components than other drive pedals, so as a result the way that all those work together matters a lot more. I think that applies to fuzzes as a unit as well. A specific fuzz has its own sound, but the guitar you have, the amp, the other pedals. All that affects how it sounds too, more than a lot of other pedals.

Dude that les Paul sounds so good any way you guys change it. That strat really shined when you Rhett had it set to be really chimey tho. I think that boss waza craft one was my favorite.

I like to think that a fuzz turned up doubles the strings relatively speaking. A heavy one string fuzz lick or riff has the power of double stops or two string power chords with an overdrive or something cleaner. 2 strings has the power more like 4 strings. Thinking like that helps me play less busy to keep a fuzz happy and not muddy up with chords that can't be as layered and still sound good.

I use a mkii type bender & dial it in by diming the level, then working up the attack knob til it hits a sweet spot, so that bit about turning the knobs toward one another was spot-on.

OK. I’ve never been much of a player to touch the volume and tone controls on my guitar, and I’ve not used fuzz much either as I’ve been a Les Paul straight into a simple low wattage valve amp type of simpleton. But I’ve just had a revelation with this fuzz stuff, both here and on the JHS channel. I just tried turning my volume down into fuzz, and it’s sounds amazing. Not that awful spitty gritty sound I’ve always associated with fuzz pedals. And my engineering background helps me make sense of it. Yes, the high end is rolled down when reducing the guitar volume pot but fuzz creates a bunch of harmonics. So when the guitar signal is darker, there’s more room in the high mids and highs for the new, distortion (fuzz) harmonics and there’s less high end in the original guitar signal to create those buzzy, harsh high frequency harmonics. Plus the number and level of harmonics is reduced in general due to lower level. So I’m getting these wonderfully balanced harmonics which are in the normal overdriven amp range, but still with the interesting part of the fuzz character - rather than that sound I expected, with high level harmonics going up to the sky and just marking too much of a mess for my ears. I can’t believe I’ve never experimented with this before!

Fuzz makes a great old fashioned, 'Im going to get a good amp one day, but liked the old crazy horse sound' kinda noise. Perfect for a 'Rust never sleeps' cover band

@@richardclark. yep 60 cycle is the reason I got it and tried it. It works. Just not my cuppa tea. Too bright. I found the triangle muff and it’s warmer. Fuzzier. A little more costly but it’s a forever on my pedal board… and it’s more so like a transparent fuzz. It can go from filthy fizzy. To almost a warm OD just past breakup

@@robertgransee8849 I meant the pedal pushing the guitar to the edge 😂 I own a strat and a les Paul. The triangle always gets the job done for fuzz. If I want them crunchy I’m going with my tube screamer

Thanks for that, guys! It was informative. I was on the side of I didn't think I liked fuzz all that much, it was way down on my list of things to get. I like the Dreadbox Disorderrrrr. I like the versatility and the sounds it can make. I've been wanting to do synth sounds on my axe, now I can easily! Gonna get me one. Plus, fuzz in general opens up riffs and makes them BIG! You guys have done us a service. Tanx! 👍

I have the JHS Bender, use most of any of my dirt pedals. The sound with humbuckers is massive. Also have a home-made Jordan Bosstone (shout-out to General Guitar Gadgets for the kit), nasty, snarly, octaves drifting in and out, great for 1960s psychedelic noise sort of jams.

Enjoyed the video, thanks. I’d like to contribute by pointing out that most fuzz type effects work with the impedance relationship between the guitar and the effect. So, chaining pedals like in the first part of the video alters their response and tone, whether the pedals are buffered or not. 🙋‍♂️
