Hey, with perlite prop you want to go semi-hydro. So you put it in a cup/glass without drainage holes and fill the cup with wet perlite pour water in about 1/3 of the way and place the cutting in. By far the fastest and most successful prop method for me

Where do you place the cuttings during propagation? Do you recommend some type of greenhouse or just in a well lit room? Just wondering about light, temperature and humidity?

@@Unfiltered_1 that really depends on the specific plant or type of propagation. Normally I just put them in bright indirect light nothing special regarding humidity unless it would be some humidity loving plant like alocasia or it would be wet stick propagation of pothos etc. but for wet stick prop I’d definitely go with sphagnum moss and not perlite as medium

@@harrymetcalf9512 thank you for your reply. You always see videos about propagation but they never say anything about lighting. I did build a propagation box with a grow light and a warmer to keep the plants around 75-80 degrees. I am using sphagnum moss as the medium. And keeping the humidity around 75-80% I’m hoping this will work. I’m new into caring for plants and It’s my first time trying to propagate. I’m currently trying Rhaphidophora Tetrasperma and a Rhaphidophora Hayi. Hoping i get some good results 😊

@@Unfiltered_1 be careful with the grow lights so that you don’t burn the leaves. The plants need to aclimate to it as it produces UV light with gets normally filtered out by window glass so usually no plants indoors have produced enzymes that protect it against UV.

I hope Melisa or someone else who knows what they are doing will read my comment / question, as I badly need some advice. About 3 weeks ago I bought an RT pot from a grocery store, it had 3 plants and I managed to bring it to the brink of death in 1 week, by overwatering it. It was potted in that fluffy soil, I didn’t realize that it was wet at the bottom and watered it some more. I took it out, spread the soil to dry, repotted it, and put one of them in water because it had no roots. After another week of daily misting the sad-looking leaves, I took them out again, all the roots were rotted, part of the stem was rotted. I removed all the black parts, cut each into 2 pieces, planted 1 in perlite, one in a mixture of bark, perlite and a little of the original soil (it died), one in sphagnum moss (it died, probably because I kept it too wet, or I didn’t let it callus a little before) and one in water. I put all containers in a plastic box with cover. The one in water had 4 nodes, 2 under water and 2 above. White, fuzzy roots appeared within less than a week from the top 2 nodes which are not under water. The one in perlite also has 2 new roots that started inside the perlite, but are now 1/2 inch outside the perlite, pointing straight up. My question: how should I pot the one in water? I want to pot them in a bark and perlite mix, but should I burry those roots? Or leave them outside? Or wait until roots come from the bottom nodes before I repot? I’m happy that it rooted, I really want to save it, maybe the plant gods will forgive me for putting this plant through so much stress. Thank you for your help!

Hello Maple88 !! Wow I can see you have put so much effort into helping out this plant, love that 💚 I would say you could wait a bit longer, but If the nodes are spent then roots will not grow. You could cut the bottom nodes and let the top ones continue to grow in the water. I would slowly transition the cutting, by putting mostly perlite in the mix when transferring. Also, side note, I don't mist my RT at all! I personally don't think it's necessary. It can cause bacteria and mold if the water sits on the leaves for too long. Let me know if you have an update! @@Melisawith1Schannel thanks so much! A couple of days ago I did basically just about everything you suggest. I transferred the one that was growing roots in perlite into a pot with a mix of media made from orchid bark, perlite and a little bit of the fluffy soil that was in the original pot. I created a pocket of perlite, placed the plant in it, the roots were flexible enough to stay parallel to the perlite, and I covered with media mix. The one growing in water: I cut the piece with 2 nodes that didn’t have roots, and I put it in perlite, just in case. And I also put in perlite the top part with the 2 nodes that had roots. The roots were a little grayish, I’m not sure they were in good shape, but maybe more will come from the same nodes. So far, after 2 days, the leaves have not curled. In 2 weeks I’ll know if they are out of the woods. Or “in the woods” would be better for this plant?

11:52 So the white tip at each node is a branch forming. Mine is about 3years old, growing in a well draining 20 oz drink cup and watered from the bottom. I use Miracle Gro fertilizer in evere watering. It is forming a new lead leaf and a white spot at each node.

Did you propagate it because it was struggling, for some reason I remember you saying that. I actually propagated mine because I bought it struggling and it died in the water 😩 but I’m sure it was because it was already struggling. I’m so glad yours is doing well!! Now what are you going to do with 3 more of the same plant? 😂

Haha actually it's been thriving and haven't had any issues, besides it growing too fast 😂 ..and I wanted to cut it back since it was touching the ceiling, and to see what would happen 😁🌿💚 now I'm just letting it crawl around the room haha I can either share the plant with some people or sell them haha 2 RTs is good enough for me 😅

On amazon I've bought the brand Coaste 😊 the New Zealand moss is popular too! I would recommend both! But, also the garden centres near me sell moss, some big box stores, and hardware stores!! haha I was surprised when I saw that it was available at a local hardware store down the street from my house 😁👌💚

Hi! Awesome videos, I enjoy all your advice and watching your plants grow. Recently my rhaphidophora tetrasperma has grown so tall that I have him clipped to my wall all the way up to the ceiling. Any advice on watering without moving him? I have it planted in a nursery pot with holes which I keep inside of a decorative pot. Previously, I was watering in my sink until the soil was saturated and the water ran through but now without moving him the water has no where to drain except to flow into the decorative pot. How do other plant parents usually water plants they can’t move? Thanks!

Hi Theresa! Thank you for sticking around and watching all the plant progress. I'm glad you enjoy the advice I have provided 😁💚 .. I have a couple of options: You can try bottom watering! You can add one cup at a time until you feel the top of the soil moist. If you can just lift the plant out of the decorative pot, then You can also drill holes in the decorative pot and add a clear saucer to catch water. Or maybe repot the plant if needed?

Hi Zainab! I hope this information was helpful 😊 If the offshoots don't have roots them keep the soil moist but not wet! Adding perite will also help with root rot. If it's on a window sill then the sun should be bright indirect light, Keeping the cutting warm to encourage root growth. If they have some root then it can be watered normally, letting it dry between waterings. For my mother plant, I water my mother plant when the moisture metre reads 3 or less and when I put my finger in the soil feels dry (no sooner) haha 🌿💚 let me know if you have any other questions!

New sub here, I love that you used the pallet to display your plants. I came in search of info on this plant. I bought via the mail a cutting on Oct 22. It's been very slow but yesterday pushed out a leaf finally. However it's limp for lack of a better word. The petiole is firm but the leaf itself isn't. Is this normal? The mother leaf is perfect. I hope it hardens up 🙏🏻

@@Melisawith1Schannel It's in an Ikea cabinet, so lots of light and humidity and it's getting watered every 10th day. The leaf did stiffen up but this morning after yesterday's water I noticed it's yellowish with dark green veins. This plant, my goodness 🤦🏻‍♀️☺️

I would definitely check the roots! Because it may be staying moist for too long. I find my plant can handle under watering but not over!! 🌿🌿🌿

@@Melisawith1Schannel oh gosh now I'm going to expose those roots rn 😬 stay tuned. * deep breath Ok roots are white and firm whewww. So as I was doing that here were my thoughts. Cabinet around 28-30 c (82.4f) and 65-70% humidity. I fertilizer every watering with 1-1-1 fish emulsion. The older leaf is getting a brown/yellow spot and new leaf is upright and firm but it's like see thru with dark green veins. I REALLY appreciate you talking this out with me, I don't want to lose her. 😕

Hello Elizabeth! Yes! As long as it's still "active", the node should be a light green colour, and the aerial root should been healthy too (not rotted). You can place it in a small container with damp moss or perlite 😁🌿 hope this help! Thank you so much for watching 💚

What if your cutting (i chose a whole vine) has aerial roots. Can i still put it in water? The bottom node actually has a huge aerial root. Will it rot? Im afraid of soil propagating

Hi Sophia 💚 You can definitely place the aerial root in water! You can also air layer the vine as an option too

You can keep an eye on it if you see the stem rotting 👀 I always like to leave an extra bit of space when cutting the stem before the node just in case. And you can wait for it to callus over too so that it's not too soft. Make sure it's not in too big of a jar with too much water either! Plan B if it doesn't root you can place in a moss prop box!
