John confuses me and makes me want to quit. Californication is in the key of Am, but yet he is playing C# minor pentatonic and it works. Lol. FML.

Whole solo section is modulation to f# minor, man :) And he then gets out of it swiftly, with the help of E major at the end of this part.

@@TheNomios F#?? That doesn't make me feel any better. LOL. The song is in A minor, which theoretically will have all of the notes in Cmaj, which there are no sharps or flats.

@@dada402 Yeah, but it is a modulation - meaning the song totally switches key in this moment (to f# minor in this case). Listen carefully to the song and notice how the whole solo section seems like it could be in a totally different song. He then uses E major chord as a turnover to go back to a minor/Cmajor. Modulations are cool, look them up, there are plenty of videos on the topic :)
