During the 2018 Eurosatory exhibition in Paris, Rheinmetall presented a ground-breaking technological innovation that may change the way that infantry engages the enemy on the battlefield. It was the Mission Master Cargo Unmanned Ground Vehicle.
Besides helping alleviate a soldier’s carry load, the Mission Master UGV can effectively detect and engage the enemy with state-of-the-art artificial intelligence and the latest weaponry against hostile troops and armored vehicles.
Even more impressive, the Mission Master can scan the environment and provide immediate feedback to other units, and it can make its way through rocky terrain, mud, sand, and even cross rivers with ease thanks to its hybrid nature, as it can also be controlled by an operator when the fighting turns more difficult.
Having a Mission Master UGV in the battlefield will help elite operators analyze the surroundings, take their positions, and fire explosive projectiles when the enemy least expects it. That's what the future of combat looks like.

@@AnonEMus-cp2mn I rocked iron sights for three tours. Had the second most EKIA's in my battalion. On my second tour an OPS NCO asked why I was using iron sights ony M4. I told him it was because they wouldn't let me use my old M16A2 from the first tour. He clarified with, "Yeah but why iron sights and not a CCO like everyone else?" This is back when they had the little proprietary battery. I asked him what the holdover was at 500m for the CCO and stated that irons don't glint, they don't have glass to break or batteries to run out. The large aperture peep sight and tracers still work at night. And when I told him that iron sights have been killing people a lot longer than anything else, he acknowledged reality and got my point. I'm not saying that elite operators can't walk without crutches but, you should hear them bitch when they have to.

People talking about drones taking it out. Well this is also a drone. Except on the ground and given a fancy UGV label. It is still a remotely operated drone with the option for autonomous/AI configurations. But for whatever reason, they want to show case the "follow me function" so badly. I am pretty sure most people if given the armed setup will just let it do it's thing while they control at a safe distance (like aerial drones). As for taken out by RPGs, well that is FAR better than a guy getting blown up inside the vehicle (ala the T-72s in Ukraine). Same for drones that get shot down, but it beats the pilot getting shot down in a manned helicopter or plane by a Stinger missile.

Where they will really excel though is as mules for heavy weapons platoons, pioneer infantry and for signals guys (wet dream for those guys) and logistical support (ammunition runs etc). "Well shit, we're in the middle of scenic nowhere with only the gear we brought with us on the back of this here 8 wheeled tonka truck. We crossed a river and left all of our support behind because that just seemed like the logical thing to do. Being that we were the only guys in the area the enemy honed in on our rough location by triangulating the only RF signals in an area where nobody should be. It's the size of a shed so they saw it from two miles out roving around the landscape where no reasonable group would be bringing such large and heavy equipment and it took some fire so 3 of the 8 wheels are flat and it can't move over anything but flat ground. The optics took a hit from a toy laser that fried the visual sensors so now it can't see anything and the weapons system on top was a highly situational option to begin with so it's useless too; maybe next time we'll mount the machine gun so it's as effective as one more squad member. So now we have to either carry this full ton of sensitive and vital equipment on our backs or destroy it. We contemplated calling in an artillery strike to solve our woes but we were told to just use the rockets on the back of the unit so the whole fucking world can see exactly where we are and make ourselves a priority target because that's just so much cooler than using the dedicated fire support equipment we have at a single radio call away. It's days like this where I wish I had signed up to the engineers so I could properly help my comrades get to where they need to be instead of openly encouraging them to rely on their own wits and a singular piece of hardware like the movies."

I accept that this would serve to unburden troops of the extraneous weight they presently carry. As a mule-vehicle, or medical evacuation craft, I can see nothing but benefits. Where I am concerned, is where it is used in an autonomous role, which has already been forsworn by manufacturers as something they will not accept for their robotics.

"AI" is simply jargon for expert software. The programmers have to actually tell it to do the nasty stuff you imagine. Think of it like this, we have software that can beat any human in a game of chess, but that is ALL that software can do, and to do it, it had to be told how to play chess. Or think of it like this, are you scared that Siri will somehow take control of the guns you have locked in your gun safe and shoot you with them? That, is all that "AI" is, there''s no actual intelligence, emotion, soul, or sense of self existence. It is merely highly specialised software, programmed to fulfill highly specific tasks.

In other situations, it'll be good, convoys? Can be used as cover, can be moved easier out of the way than a Humvee or an MRAP when it eventually gets destroyed during an ambush. On defense? Try pinning a squad of marines if this little fucker keeps popping out of cover and redirecting rpgs and gun fire. On retreat? Just leave these behind to cover your sorry asses to safety, saving your buddys from getting a one way ticket to heaven. Hell, why wouldn't you want a damn auto cannon covering your ass on the ready?

@@titanfallgamerwithnotitanf8187 Because they are an incredible liability that smaller, man portable options like AT-4/Javalin and 240B are perfectly capable of filling. Just my opinion... I'd rather carry the extra weight in ammo belts and kit than have one of these things anywhere near me. Perhaps having one drop off supplies to a pre-designated drop area that we can move to that is well away from our op area... sure... but having an integrated truck like this for dismounted infantry work will get us all killed.

That's why a lot of UGVs are being equiped with electric of hybrid engines--very quiet. There has always been a need for the equivalent of mules and additional fire support; how intelligently you use them determines whether they are an asset or a liability. You may as well complain about how APCs, MIFVs, and tanks can't be useful because they have GIANT footprints. It comes down to your tactical doctrine and your commander's intelligence. If you are part of an offensive wave, you don't have to worry as much about being followed by an enemy that's being pushed back. With the increased mobility, energy conservation, and fire support provided by UGVs, the speed of an offensive could change the calculus of a battle drastically.
@dampsok
@dampsok 6 ай бұрын
@@Kirin2022 I can tell you don't actually have any experience with this... use as many camo nets and dead branches as you want... you aren't going to hide from a drone or a patrolling ATGM squad. FLOT's are a thing of the 20th century. There is no specific line of troops anymore, as these lines are generally porous enough to allow small groups of enemy infantry through them, or to be hidden as the mechanized column passes through, leaving enemy at your rear, undetected.

@Demane69 Жыл бұрын
For how long? Drones exist now because they are cheap, which means they are fragile and lack defenses. The counter to drones will be easy for high tech nations. There will indeed be a drones arms race, but conventional drones are easily detected. A.I. controlled defenses would likely be lasers. This means battery hybrid vehicles which this one already is (I'd assume it would need further build to spec features) so the batteries could be recharged for laser use. The benefit of drones is that they are cheap and easily deployed. The downfall to drones are they are cheap and low tech, and will be easily countered low cost measures once implemented. There is an issue with this demo. The vehicles are designed for conventional ground operations, but this could easily be converted to mobile anti-drone defense.

@raykoziupa8275
@raykoziupa8275 Жыл бұрын
@@cstgraphpads2091 The drones carry a couple small bombs which are dropped on and easily penetrate through the thinner armor on tanks! The drone is then reused and sent back to do it over and over again. Low prices drones kill multi million dollar tanks! Even tanks with "self defense" systems only have a very limited amount of "self defense" rounds they can fire. And all the drone operators have to do is drop more shells than the tank has to try to defend itself. Laser systems dont work on drones that reflect the lasers. The mentality of building expensive behemoths belongs to the past century. Warfare has move way past that outdated mentality.
@raykoziupa8275
@raykoziupa8275 Жыл бұрын
@@Demane69 Wars are NOT won by spending huge amounts on making expensive targets! For example, a Russian tank that costs $5 million can be taken out by a $100 shell dropped from a $1000 drone. You can deploy roughly 5000 drones for the price of one tank! NO tank...no matter how good it's defenses can defend itself from 5000 drones. 99% of the drones will survive the tanks defenses intact to repeat the cycle and wipe out thousands of tanks. The age of the tank or other armored vehicles being "supreme" is over. It has gone the way of the dinosaurs like the Maginou line in France. Billions spent on a huge "impenetrable" fortress line that was easily made useless by tanks ( like today's drones) being more manuverable, cheaper, and more numerous...just did an end run around it. Lasers require a large amount of power to be effective. That requires a significant size machine. A laser defense system will NOT take out all 5000 drones in a drone swarm that blocks out the sun! It only takes one hit to take out the vehicle. Frequency jamming is a joke. Drones can easily be made rf proof and have A.I targeting and need NO two way communication with an operator. Only a fool spends money on fighting today's war with technology and tactics from the last century. The wise person uses technology and tactics from the NEXT century.

it's a wheeled version of the boston dynamics robo-dog, great idea and tech, but they keep advertising it to SOF when it fits more with regular infantry. Having a bunch of ISR, firepower, and cargo carry itself along with a regular patrol would be great, you'd probably want two so one could stay and fight and the other shuttle wounded back to base and ammo/food/water/meds to the front. But that's means each patrol costs 10x its price?. But sending one of these on a blind hike through the woods with some sneaky people seems like a great way for those people to get this thing stuck and it to become a liability. Interesting tech but needs some tweaks

it needs more armor the advantage to it being un maned is that its weight is low relative to its size if this thing isnt ment to be disposable then i would hope it has atleast .50 cal rated armored and maybe even more i mean like i said without a crew you shouldnt have a hard time adding a stupid amount of armor to the thing i mean even Bradley levels of armor should be achievable

Armor? It's a support vehicle to assist troop movements, scouts, etc, not a cavalry charger leading them on the front lines.

So armor the unmanned thing whose 2-3 person crew operates it remotely? Well, if the troops it supports have armor. (I'm not sure which deserves such protection more, or desires it 😏)

Impressive demonstration but probably not mobile enough to keep up with infantry in rough country. Give them small, quiet camera drones so they can see what they're up against and data links to call in precision whupass when they need it.

I was actually thinking of a tethered drone that could rise off the top of the mast to peak around and over. Like climbing a tree. Would be nice to see in dark fog smoke thermal et al Seems best use would be drop or move out support. Then fall back to.

the main thing i can think of is 6 guys hiding out in the woods or a building with this thing going please dont see me. the bigger issue when things go south the gear you would normally have on you is strapped to this thing, its not like it can throw you a mag or prep a charge/ grenade or get the next mg belt ready let alone any first aid. in the rear or secured locations i think it will be awesome just not in the front or the dark front, to many unknowns

Impressive piece of equipment. Does the U.S. military utilize any of these? 🌴☀️🌴
@MisterLEM0NS
@MisterLEM0NS Жыл бұрын
No, because the last thing a squad need is more equipment than they can carry, a unit too big to traverse certain areas, another vehicle to maintain, a constant source of RF emissions on top of their exact location, a platform with a bigass weapon on top requiring a supply of specialty munitions, and a soft target the size of a shed following them around that can be *completely* disabled by electronic warfare or a 1 watt laser. Like so many other conceptual pieces of shit, it's a cooperate circlejerk making something really shiny that grabs lots of attention foaming at the mouth to get in on those fat defense budget contracts. Looks fun on paper, absolutely worthless in practice.

Yes it Is impressive. Britian has already purchased them from Canada. Give the U.S. some time, it was only released in 2020. Buddy has NO clue what he's talking about. Time's are changing fast. Outstanding piece of kit. (Edit: he also likes his own comments lmao) It's last test, it fired and hit a 4x4 target over 4 klms away with it's Thales laser guided missiles. It's a very low profile A-UGV.

@@locknload9143 It's a great piece of kit until it gets caught up in the first set of overgrown foliage when your squad has to traverse a draw. keep this kit to the roads... it has no place being integrated into the dismounted infantry unit.

i wonder how it fares against landmines, seems like the largest hindrance in the application of a vehicle like this
@sleepingninjaquiettime
@sleepingninjaquiettime Жыл бұрын
Everything is hindered by land mines/IEDs. I don't think land mines will be a problem considering it's pacing soldiers who are boots on the ground. These vehicles are probably meant to be deployed to areas that are isolated and too rough for wheeled or tracked vehicles, so I don't think land mines will be a big threat. I imagine they will have some sort of combat engineer/EOD/sapper variant for those threats.

How loud is it? If it needs to run an ICE motor to recharge batteries, that would be somewhat ok, if it has a power supply allowing a silent run option. If it only has an ICE motor, then that would be problematic for SOF soldiers.

ICE is its primary power, and it can run hours on batteries-only. Like the difference between soldiers running into a launching place, then crawling sneakily to the target.

Tbh that drone vehicle isn't really new, the us had a very similar vehicle wich also featured in a game stemming from the xbox 360 and playstation 3 era: the game homefront, the vehicle i am talking about is name in that game as the goliath. Wich was also made to carry cargo and was able to have at least a auto canon. Thus the concept is nothing really new...
