I understand it that when he sings "Man on the Middle Cross " he is referring to Jesus. Meaning that he is thankful that Jesus (who was on the middle cross as the bible tells us) died and rose to forgive us of our sins. I agree with you, that women, men, everyone needs forgiveness from sins, but I just thought I would help to clarify that lyric. Hope that helps.
