Jeff Beck is one of the greatest guitar players of all time, and he's probably your favorite guitar player's favorite guitar player. I consider myself lucky to have seen him play live in 2019 at the Crossroads Guitar Festival, it was a truly unforgettable night. RIP to one of the most influential and legendary musicians of our time.

Saw him in 1989 on a double bill with Stevie Ray Vaughan. On that tour they took turns headlining and Stevie played first that night. Stevie was an absolute monster and I remember thinking how tough it was going to be to follow him. But then Jeff came out and I was absolutely staggered. It was literally the most intense musical experience of my life, and believe me there have been many. I actually forgot to breathe at multiple points and almost passed out. Absolute transcendent rapture.

The Miles Davis of guitar. He was constantly adapting to new musical ideas and surrounded himself with great players who elevated his own performances. That’s just a surface resemblance. He also played in a way where one note and you know it’s him. He played with space, dynamics, melodies, and took huge harmonic chances. I think no one came as close as Jeff to the nuances of the human voice, as his performances of Nessun Dorma and Over the Rainbow demonstrated. He always looked for the next road, not being satisfied with only one road to travel where he’d always see the same territory. He was 1 of 1.

Rhett, you were very fortunate having seen Jeff...for the last number of years (since Live +...Rhonda Smith, by theway, is also an incredible bassist...listen to her solo on You Know You Know) I've been diving into his work and collecting the records I didn't have earlier...I had gotten a Strat body and neck with a reversed headstock and a Telecaster kit for Christmas...both going to be finished in white, ala Beck... I was completely shocked...

That Tal Wilkenfeld/Vinnie Colaiuta band he had in 2007 was amazing. When I heard he died, I immediately went back and listened to the Live at Ronnie Scott sessions from that year. It's amazing.

The performance at Ronnie Scott's posed a problem for the band who were all used to much larger venues. That they managed to come up with my favourite live performance recording in the last 55 years is amazing. I can't play the DVD without crying for the joy of hearing the band play!

Losing Jeff is hard. He was 78 but honestly seemed to be getting better every year to the extent that his loss feels as much like losing a legend as it would a young promising player...thats how inspired he was to the end. Totally agree. I saw him in the summer and the first 5 numbers his playing was even better than the numerous clips and records I've heard. Less impressed when he became a sideman at his own concert, not by his playing but that he had to reign in that talent to fit around Depp's contribution, I'd have preferred him as his own man.

Superstition is the first record I ever bought when I was a little kid. I think I was 13 and it was a 45, cost me 99 cents. I'm now in my 50s and I still remember walking to the store to buy it! Beck has influenced me as a guitar player my whole life. RIP and thanks for the beautiful playing Jeff.

I'll just point out his album with Johnny Depp is amazing. The solo on Isolation, the way he mimics sax and vocals lines on Marvin Gaye and Smokey Robinson covers is beyond beyond. And to think he recorded this in his late 70's blows my mind. He was constantly innovating and improving is skills, tone, and how can he sound like a slide player with no slide. It is insanely incredible what he does with a guitar.

I was lucky enough to be there in 2007 at this version of crossroads. It's hard to really describe the command he had over the whole venue when he came out. Towards the end of Tal's solo you can see up into the crowd and notice a lot of people in standing room only trying to get a better view. The whole place literally just stopped and paid attention. He was a legend!

Dude you have some really cool amps there. I saw Beck play with Buddy Guy just like 5 years ago. He was amazing. It is true...Beck is the guitarist's guitarist. It seems only guitarists could understand and connect with Beck's genius and mastery of the instrument. Beck perfectly placed and phrased each and every note. He milked every ounce of feeling and subtlety from every note. There has never been anyone who can quite sound like him. His technique remains truly unique. Anyone can do whammy tricks but with Beck it was whammy bar, volume knob, tone knob, and a unique vibrato that only he could do. RIP Jeff Beck. His contribution to music, the guitar, and the world cannot be overstated.

I completely understand your comment around Jeff's live sound. You have to see him in person to experience the true power of his tone and mastery of the instrument. I saw Jeff around 1972 or so in a college gym in Rochester, NY. Was a fan already then because of the Truth album. The two things that always stand out for me about Jeff, well, the first is obvious. There has never been and will never be another like him and the artistry he brought to his playing. But the other thing is the pure joy he always showed for other players. You can see in Tal's eyes, how it spread to the whole band. The pure exuberance they all played with is just a joy to watch and listen to. RIP to one of the greatest ever.

Forever grateful to have seen Jeff Beck LIVE myself. I was amazed by his performance in the Felt Forum in NYC in March 2001. One of a kind player, one of the all-time Greats. Sonically he was without peer. One-of-a-kind in that his brilliant voice kept evolving into his late 70's. I truly believe he was meant to leave this earth suddenly at the apex of his talents.

I saw Jeff Beck at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles in 1980. It was the "There and Back" tour. The father of one of my friends at the time was the project engineer during the construction of the Greek Theatre, so we got comped front row seats. It was one of the best shows I have ever seen. Truly gifted.

Thanks for the video - Jeff Beck is my favorite guitarist for his ability to move me in any form of music he chooses. I saw him here in Paris a few years ago, and it was by far the best of the many concerts I have seen - he has given us so much. Thanks, Jeff!!!

Thanks Rhett, a great tribute to, also my favorite guitarist, and one of the most innovative and stylish guitarists ever, we have lost guitar gods before but this time it hurts very dee4ply. We will never get to see him again and it brings tears to my eyes. I'm not a guitarist, I'm a bassist, I play with guitarists and already have heard from old band mates. We are all devastated. I cried watching this. Jeff's been a huge part of my life through my dad who is Jeff's biggest fan and has followed him through his whole career since the 60's. I got to see Jeff live a handful of times with my dad with the highlight being the my first concert in 98 or 99 when he was working out what would be come the Who Else album songs. I'm glad you chose Cause We've Ended as Lovers in the video, it's my favorite song of Jeff's and it is his best in my opinion. He always plays it live and he always plays it slightly different. RIP Jeff.

Great homage to the master, Rhett. Thank you. It's easy to overlook the fact that Beck was a great collaborator and an alchemist of talent. He was better at blending the science and soul of music than any other. RIP.

Rhett, thanks for this video on my HERO, to whom it may matter, this is my Beck Experience, I was a 15 year old kid in Detroit, I went to see him after the Truth album came out, he had an unknown singer, named Rod Stewart, Jeff did not sing, that concert Blew Me Away, what a Night, the next time i saw him was in Albuquerque New Mexico, with Stevie Ray Vaughan, 6 months before SRV died, after they both played, they Both came onstage and Played 4 Yardbird songs together, What a Fuc,,n show, man, i left there that night in Total Guitar Heaven Man, I could not sleep that night, due to it, R.I.P to Jeff & SRV, they are in Guitar Heaven playing again , I am Crying at this time, Now, Cousin Figel

a dude at a music shop in Australia asked me who my favourite guitarist is...i recall replying " i don't really have a single favourite..but Jeff Beck comes pretty close" and he..being a good guitarist himself..nodded approvingly....RIP Jeff..you really did inspire me..i had the priviledge of seeing you gig in Sydney Aus in09...when Wired came out in early 80s i was blown away

I’m reminded of an interview with Clapton during the rehearsals for the ARMS concert in 1983. Beck was playing, and Clapton stopped mid-sentence and said, “He really is the best guitarist in England.”
