@ysahehre43167 жыл бұрын
Bill Thornton the actors have chemistry together, yes. But I'm tellin u, it was V.Harper. Ur right about it being one of the best sitcoms of it's time. This show was a hallmark of the culture then. Rhoda was a quintessential character and it carries through the film to today. There is a vibe that aligns v.harper to rhoda to the 70s.

When I rewatch shows that I grew up with like this one, sometimes I like to look up the actors who appeared on them just to see if they're still around and if so, what they're up to these days. I just looked up Scoey Mitchell and sadly he just passed away a few days ago at age 92. That's a long life, but it still sad that he's gone. I feel like I just missed him and if I'd looked him up last week, I'd have been happy to see that he was still alive. It's depressing that are so few folks from this show and others from that time period who are still with us. RIP Scoey.

Rhoda remains my favourite show now and always. Missing Valerie harper. Loved the chemistry between Rhoda, Brenda and their mother.
@annajacob79812 жыл бұрын
@robina mohammad sidaway You're right, those 3 women had great chemistry. It's what made the show so very special. Chemistry is also exactly what's missing between Rhoda and Joe -- and why, imho, Joe's character was written off the show. Between Rhoda and Joe (and underneath it, between Valerie and David Groh) there wasn't that same kind of easy relationship groove. Also, the actor David Groh didn’t have the same comedic chops as Valerie Harper. His character Joe's frustrations over Rhoda's antics were not expressed lovingly. Joe came across as very angry, instead of just being lovingly annoyed (like Ricky did with Lucy 😊). This lack of comic rhythm and Joe's lack of adoring passion for Rhoda - regardless of her insecurities, which drove her wacky words and behaviors - meant that Joe (actually David Groh) had to go. Sadly, it was a fatal miscasting error which led to the show's unraveling and early ending, in the middle of Season 5. Also, imo, the scripts suffered after their divorce because they were written primarily by men. Rhoda's stories and scripts needed a woman's POV and touch, like The MTM Show. MTM's best episodes were written by stellar women writers, including Treva Silverman and Charlotte Brown.
@girlfromthebronxbywayofelb7288Ай бұрын
The Ricky and Lucy thing only looked loving because it was the 1950s. The spankings are especially repugnant. It's called assault, abuse, and unfortunately a generation of young girls and boys were able to think it was cute and funny because the writers included it in that show. And that doesn't even address the number of times he sabotaged her attempts to seek work. Not all of that show is so funny after all.

She had a natural beauty. I'm sure make-up only made her even more striking than her natural look. Her eyes could easily seduce you. The hair was to die for. The only thing that limited her was her dead-on performance as Rhoda that pigeon holed her and audiences couldn't see her as any other character. I don't think so. Brenda is the one who introduced Joe and Rhoda. He treated her like a little sister. In fact, he wanted to celebrate her birthday with her and he didn't want her to go to San Francisco. The problem with the marriage is that Joe was lousy at being a husband. In fact, when they separated, he said that he didn't even know what he wanted. I think that he just wanted to date.

Apartment buildings were very different back in the day. Some landlords still lived in their own buildings, so they kept a close eye on things. In other cases, the landlord would allow the super to rent the apartments. That worked pretty well, because the supers lived in the building, and a good super was a good judge of character.

I think Joe would have had a good second marriage if he had married Brenda. He seems very fond of her, and she is laid back, casual, and loving. Rhoda is a hothead and can get really bitchy toward Joe. She is very sensitive, and causes many of their fights. I think Brenda needs to make her own decisions more. She never can even decide what to wear. How did she survive when Rhoda lived in Minneapolis? I would hate to go to a square dance. Marriage cannot go smoothly by reading a book about marriage. Rhoda was always living life from self-help books. Stupid! She needs to get off Joe's back.
