I just read that Jack/ Kenneth McMillan died from liver disease in '89. No offense to Kenneth, but no one is surprised-- frankly, he looks like he put a few back before every episode on this show... which is fine. He died at age 59. Doesn't he look 65 on this show--in the late '70s?

My 21st Damn, it was awful. I was b’moaning to my next elder brother that I was the last of the huge family to reach the age of majority, and no one would care. He reassured me that he would singlehandedly arrange the biggest shindig. It wasn’t bad enough that he never did, but that we worked together~~ the big day, he said nothing. The next day, nothing. He never did in the time that followed. No one remembered it that year. So, yes.... this episode hits home for me. HA! ‘Home’. Right. When I was 23, I left that whole family behind and never went back. They actually hunted me down and tried to lay guilt on ME for them falling low after I left. Lucky for television families, they always make it up to each other.

Brenda mentions heading to The Automat for lunch, and I haven't thought about that place in a long time-- a vending machine restaurant might sound odd today but they were popular in their time. Also: Brenda says "It's my party, and I'll cry if I want to" ... what a fun line, just perfect and a cool nod to the song.

Benny and Gary were so funny, they were like two brothers who were close. In NYC, it's a wonder Rhode can afford rent for such a nice apartment, her job in those days probably didn't pay much.Johnny was a dork, but he was harmless, and Rhoda should've treated him nicer.Even though he is conceited, sometimes he seems hurt.Brenda does act like a spoiled brat, but Rhode needs to get her work in order...she is disappointing her customers.I'd hate to have that job.

Rhoda's vest/sweater (14:50) looks like the forerunner to the the "swest" introduced in an episode of "Becker". Margaret's out-of-work husband Louis would drink and use his "Knitwit" knitting machine to churn out garments that were combinations of sweaters and vests. His use of color was creative to say the least and his technique badly needed honing. Obviously, Rhoda's "swest" is much more attractive, but I still wouldn't have chosen it.

I am surprised a costume shop would be that busy, making Rhoda work that hard. There'd be several such shops in NYC. I think Brenda needs to grow up. She has a 9 to 5 job, when her job ends for the day it is over. Rhoda has to keep making those costumes for customers regardless of the time. If Brenda wanted a special day on her birthday, Benny could have taken her out, he is her boyfriend. Johnny Ventura looked so much better on this ep, for some reason. Weird. His eyes looked so pretty in this ep, really expressive.

Lots of multiple casting about. Couple examples John Ritter player two different roles, as did David Masur who was a young producer sent to improve ratings at WJM in an MTM episode and later on Rhoda as Brenda’s boyfriend in the early seasons, Nick Lobo, (in year 2 or 3, he also introduced “ Johnny Venture” The Las Vegas lounge singer who had eyes and a gold chain for Rhoda and his character continued on as a semi-regular in these later seasons.
