This video demo is by far the best demo of a musical instrument that I have ever seen. For one thing - excellent musicians playing live music that grooves is SO MUCH more enjoyable than hearing the sad sequenced tracks on demos of digital based instruments. Secondly, most demos I’ve seen do one of two things - try to dazzle us with out-of-this world effects, or else show the painstaking efforts used to faithfully emulate some piece of vintage gear. Here, Dan Goldman shows off both the classic Rhodes sounds we all know, as well as the amazing possibilities of the built-in effects. Third, he’s changing the sound on the fly using dedicated controls, and not squinting at a tiny LCD screen or jabbing buttons hoping to call up the right preset. And most important of all - it’s a freakin’ genuine Rhodes piano - almost certainly the best generation yet - and it just doesn’t get better than that!

Hi Dan, your Rhodes travel was incredible and filled of true passion for this instrument that everyone can feel. But I am now more than happy to have you also back as a musician, having good memory of your past playing any kind of keyboard, improvising your own songs (Ascension still my favorite) or demoing product (SV-2 with Korg UK when our paths crossed). I understand you very busy with your manufacturing activity but let's try to keep an eye on the music and continue to please us with further videos like this. All the best and cheers. That is pretty convenient having the Maestro Ring Modulator and the rest conveniently located and built in on the front rail. Are they digital or analog?

The effects are analogue. VCA driven phaser and compressor, bucket brigade chorus and delay. Analogue drive too and resonant filter.

Brilliant! The Rhodes sounds amazing. What was your signal path? Were you using an amp? (Lab Series L4?)

I forget Dan but can you control the various effect parameters from eg foot switches / expression pedals, etc or will that come with further MIDI development? Thanks for great demo btw
@goldphinga Жыл бұрын
Hey! Yes- you can control wah, volume, pan rate and depth, phaser rate, chorus rate, delay time and mix via the 2 expression inputs as standard. In this video I was using the pedals for delay mix and also wah. Cheers!

Can you program those settings on the Rhodes for recall, or do you have to dial them in each by hand in real time?
@goldphinga Жыл бұрын
It’s all real time, much like a Minimoog. It’s very easy to quickly dial and reset things and designed to be super intuitive.

A Rhodes is a younger man's instrument. I've owned a few (have the scars to show for it) and they're just too heavy to lug around anymore. 😢
@andybrice27113 ай бұрын
I think perhaps this company should develop a digital version too, with a focus on being cheaper and more portable.
@peterb79232 ай бұрын
@@andybrice2711 Well, first off, Rhodes already makes a plug-in version of the MK 8 that sells for $300 or less and is as portable as your notebook computer. It is, IMO, the best Rhodes plug-in available, and I have about 6 or 7 Rhodes plug-ins, as well as an actual 1975 Mark I Stage 88 to compare with. So basically, they are already doing what you suggest. But if you mean that they should manufacture a hardware digital keyboard, I think there's no chance of that happening, and with good reason. Rhodes is not set up to crank out several thousand keyboards a year; that would require an additional investment of millions of dollars. And how would it be any better than the dozens of inexpensive digital keyboards that are currently available from Yamaha, Korg, etc., which all have "usable" Rhodes patches?
