On the 17th October 1980 the 1st Battalion The Rhodesian Light Infantry (the Saints) was disbanded and held their final parade. They displayed their colours and marched into history. The amazing story of the Incredible Rhodesian Light Infantry is history that deserves to be remembered. Thank God for the RLI!

@One leap too many in London Town yes, but there are a big difference between USSR/China (China is most responsible for help) and UK. USSR/China were political enemies of Rhodesia. So it is clear that they did and behave themselves as enemies. But uk was Allies of Rhodesia.

@@user-je8qo5dz5w The eastern block+China aided the Guerilla's with military support, yes. But the UK was clearly an enemy of Rhodesia. You know, in cold war, nobody believed the journalist's from the eastern block. The western media waged a propaganda campaign and the UK put politcal pressure on Rhodesia, doesn't let become an recogonized, properly independent country like South Africa. Atleast under Ian Smith's government.

As a Zimbabwean/ Rhodesian of British stock, I am beyond honoured and grateful of Rhodesia 's achievements. This country created some of the greatest men and women, both white and black. We were raised on Kindness, courage, strength, compassion, generosity, chivalry and honesty. We were a nation of traditional virtues, values and morals. We honoured, respected and protected all our wildlife and national parks ( who are still thriving today ). Proud to be African, proud to be Rhodesian, proud to be Zimbabwean

Actually some of the central aspects of apartheid (segregated suburbs and segregated government schools etc) were also at the heart of the Rhodesian way of life .Moreover, it is significant that Rhodesia also had whites-only regiments like the RLI. Consequently, my apartheid-supporting South African mother and maternal grandparents felt at home north of Beitbridge.

Abandoned and isolated by the world, yet they fought on like lions. Amazing country and fighting men. Reading Hannes Wessels's books about the SAS, RLI fireforce missions, RAR and Selous Scouts, gives me a special appreciation for just how bravely and successfully all these men fought for their country. It makes me sick thinking about how my country, and the West, abandoned them to the forces of Communism and Robert Mugabe. History tells us the rest.

Having travelled through the country a few times since the 90's I can appreciate the hardships these men faced on active duty. From what I've subsequently seen and heard the Rhodesian Army fought like lions. Brave men, who despite being victors on the battlefield, were defeated by the collusion and betrayal of politicians!! To this day, the country has never recovered (or ever will IMO).

My dad fought in the Rhodesia war, it changed him some what, he would come home for six weeks and be gone for six weeks, this carried on for a long time, I was very small then, did not quite under then. It’s so sad to see what’s happened- this should have never happened- I am sure there was a better way.

They needed a slow and gradual pace of decolonisation to bring the standards of living of European and African in line, probably also more immigration from Europe and Asia to quell racial tensions. Sadly post ww2 politics and African decolonisation had other things in store for Rhodesia. These fighters knew the desperate situation that would ensue if Rhodesia was handed over to Mugabe, so they fought for a better future. Then again it's hard to fault Africans fighting for equality in their nation, just a tragedy for everyone but the corrupt ZANU PF elites.

I can't help but to admire their parade drill. Heavily influenced by the British as was the Canadian Army when I served. Also noticed the use of FN FAL. I trained with them in the late 60s early 70s. I still think it's a superior assault rifle.

@ByHisCallyes it is and yes it does. I'm an old man and stuck in my ways. The FN FAL is a reliable, accurate assault rifle. It would have been better if it was .280 caliber as originally proposed by the British but of course the Yankees had to duck that up. The FN FAL could compete with the AK47. There are a lot of dead Americans killed in Vietnam because their M16 didn't work at a crucial moment.

The FN only had a big kick if you were used to firing a pop gun 😂. First weapon I fired & it did me alright for the next 8 years in the hondo. Get used to it & the kick doesn't seem so bad. I used to shut my gas adjustment off, so all the gases would recycle the weapon. Gave me the biggest kick, but l never ever had a stoppage in any contact (firefight) Hell in one contact even fired 2 rifle grenades FROM THE SHOULDER. Next morning had a bruise from my right nipple down to my elbow. Didn't feel a thing whilst firing them. Funny what adrenaline can do to you when someone with an AK doesn't like you
