In this episode of The History of we, for the first time, dive into a nation's entire camouflage history. That nation? Rhodesia. In this video we cover all the patterns from the World War II Denison smocks up through the various Rhodesian Brushstroke patterns.

When I was a kid, some of my relatives emigrated to South Africa (late 70's), and one Christmas I was given a full Rhodesian camouflage suit (trousers, shorts, tunic, cap) and I distinctly remember hiding in the bushes at the bottom of my grandma and grandads garden one Christmas day night, with my two uncles looking from the bedroom window with a powerful torch/spotlight, trying to spot me in between the shrubs and bushes.. Even though Northern England on Christmas Day night, close to the North Sea coast, the temperatures and the foliage is 'slightly' different to Central/Southern Africa in the bush, my uncles couldn't find me and I wasn't found until I voluntarily surrendered around midnight when it was time for us all to leave my grandparents and for us to go home.. (or maybe it was a cunning plan to occupy the noisy and boisterous kids while the adults got down to drinking and eating..😂😂) Either way, it was a pretty good camouflage pattern, and it is so effective that I didn't even realise that there was a matching cap in the top pocket until 6 months later. 😂

@@lauritorni4879 I wish I still had it, but Its been lost or discarded over the last 35-40 years. It was a perfect replica, even down to the distinctive cap with the rear flap, even the buttons and the shoulder patches etc were identical to the genuine uniform. It was probably a couple of years before Rhodesia was renamed Zimbabwe so it was probably based on the genuine Rhodesian Army combat uniform.

I was a kid in South Africa in the 70s. I had a childs overall in Rhodesian camo that I wore as often as possible. My parents destroyed it when they found out camo was illegal in civilian hands... was I upset! I had many ex-Rhodesian friends in the 80s and 90s. Most of them burned their camo before fleeing over the border to South Africa because they were told the new Zimbabwe border guards acted harshly with known white Rhodesian ex soldiers. Many of the troops experimented with their camo by dying it themselves. An ex-C Squadron SAS mate had the 1970 standard pattern dyed black for night operations. As the black washed out over time and the underlying pattern re-emerged, the more effective it became for night ops. He had different patterns for different times of the year from heavily faded to new to dyed camo.

It's interesting that old camouflage are still very useful today even if they are not used by the military or by sometimes by its S.O.F and PMC's are used. And I gotta say....Tigerstripes, Brushstrokes, and U.S Woodland are just awesome camouflages. Sure today's camo have some uses. But used in jungles, temperate forests and swamps can literally be useful. But hot damn nothing beats old camo.

Several minor variations have been produced printed on different types of abrics. A good video thank you! I remember a group of men walking away from me along the banks of the Zambezi river. After about eighty metres distant I could no longer see their upper bodies covered in camouflage but could clearly see their white legs, as they wore shorts. It looked like legs walking without torsos it was really weird. Also, during a refresher training exercise I had a platoon of men looking for me in broad daylight from twenty metres away but they could not spot me. It was superb camo.

I served in the Rhodesian Army Infantry from 08 January 1976 through 31 January, 1977 and I still have my combat cap, combat jacket, camo hat, two camo T-shirts and two company T-shirts plus my dog tags stained by my sweat, a camo shirt that was my dad's, (as he was still serving at 46 when I did my service at 18) and, even a SAP combat jacket that an SAP member gave him on one of his operational stints...

Very interesting. Thank you for a really informative video. I see your footnote, regarding SADF troops around #300 on the counter. Certainly circa early nineteen eighties. National Servicemen and their PT instructor. (Crossed swords = Physical Training) Definitely old style SADF Nutria-Browns, 'Bos hoed' (Bush Hat) and canvas web belts. Difficult to place where these recruits are being put through their paces? One man's dry Savanna is another man's Ovamboland. They're certainly being given some tips on military etiquette. Those were the 'daze'

Malayan Emergency or Darurat was also caused by Chinese Civil War, it all started by the Chinese Nationalist and Chinese Communist rivalry in China 1927, later the KMT-CPC rivalry spread to the overseas Chinese communities including the ones in Malaya and Borneo. I still have a full set of RLI camo's,given to me in the mid 1980's, when I was serving and working in South Africa .They belonged to a close friends older brother who served in the RLI.I worked with many men who served up there,from RLI ,RAR,SAS ,Selous Scouts and Special Branch .Lest We Forget.

I am wondering why it took so long for the USA to to issue camo pattern utility uniforms to all troops. When I first arrived in Vietnam (1966) we were wearing the standard olive green jungle utilities. Camo patterns were worn only by special units. And other than in Vietnam, the army and the Marines wore he cotton O.D. uniform. However, by the time I left Vietnam for the last time (early 1972), camo utilities were pretty well issued to all the troops... Was price the issue or was it that the armchair leaders didn't like the look of camo pattern uniforms. Or was it a ploy to keep "special" units "special" by having them wear "special" uniforms... The pattern that I liked the most was the green "Tiger Stripe" variety... I was a combat cameraman with the Pacific Fleet Combat Camera Group and spent an aggregate of 26-months in-country filming the Brown Water Navy, the Seabees, the Vietnamese Navy River Assault Groups and various other activities. My unit went the "el cheapo" way in providing us uniforms. They issued us olive drab shirts that had been refused by the SeaBees because they were woven so tightly that they couldn't breath. My unit got these shirts free from salvage. I did my first amphibious landing (Deckhouse Three Phase Two) wearing one of these shirts. That ws in IV Corps area, just north of Vung Tau in heavy jungle. I almost died from the heat and the shirts were terrible.

In the mid 80s I stumbled upon a Rhodesian jacket. It was either the second or fourth version. It was in a surplus store in Canada and I don't remember which city that it was in. Calgary, Edmonton, Ottawa or maybe Winnipeg. Anyway, I was shocked to see it and if I remember correctly, it had a hefty price tag. I don't remember the exact amount but I think it was $400 or more. Far beyond what I could spend at the time. That's probably about $1200 in today's dollars. That was back when the Swiss pattern was about $1500 for a complete set. Now you can get it for $10.

You look at the amount of over gear modern armies like the US and just looking at the combat effectiveness of theRLI and the SADF the only thing I can say is to modern armies is simply armatures. I do have a bias in considering my grandfather was Rhodesian and my dad served in the sadf

I had a cap with the rear flap that was of the 1st pattern.My father got it from a guy that served in the war and came to the US from Rhodesia in the mid/late 70's to live.It had all buttons,not snaps.Yeah it was pretty faded. Might still have it somewhere.

Reminder that there was serious talk of issuing those on fireforce duty other uniforms because Brushstroke worked too well and allied aircraft often nearly hit troopers because they couldnt see them.

7:13 Looks like just a faded, sun bleached, regular brushstroke kepi. That would explain the inside being the normal color, as it was untouched by the hot Rhodesian sun.
