That’s crazy, I just had a male Cane Corso named Diesel pass away and we’re looking for another dog for our family. We discovered the Vizsla and thought it might be a good fit but I’m also considering a Rhodesian Ridgeback after learning more about the breed. Thanks for the info!

I've had 2 Ridgebacks. When I got my first one, a friend who was from Africa said 'there is only one thing wrong with them' naturally I was waiting for her to tell me they were aggressive or something, but no, she said 'when they die, their owners grieve for them'. She spoke the truth. It's been 18 months since my boy passed away and I still miss him.

I cannot even let my mind go there because I end up in tears every time. I adopted a ridgeback cross bullmastiff and I am starting to see that she’s getting older which makes me want to quit work and spend all my time with her. I know that’s a bit crazy but I had not even heard of what I have experienced with her. I don’t know what type of intelligence these dogs have, but we, humans, are nowhere near understanding it. She once prevented, what I believe was, an opportunistic abduction attempt of my little nephew. We were dining in a cafe in an outdoor area (on the street). Would have stayed for well over an hour. My dog was chilled out and sat under the table, got treats from everyone. A lot of people walked passed us, it was a nice warm day and she did not react to a single person. Suddenly!! She threw herself across the table and placed her body in front of my nephew’s high chair, which was at the edge of the table. She barked and growled aggressively while moving from right to left covering 180degrees of his exposed back. When I looked up, there were 2 odd-looking men making a beeline for us. They were wearing dark clothes, glasses and hats. There was something off about them - they were possibly under the influence of something. My dog was so loud that everyone started staring at them. As they got closer, one of them grabbed the other and redirected him. Everyone was looking around, except for those men. They sped up and disappeared around the corner. She kept barking in their direction until they were out if sight and then sat behind him as we got ready to leave. I have no idea what she smelled or what she sensed from those two men that she didn’t from anyone else, but I only wish I caught it on video. It was like she sensed something malevolent from them.m, or maybe she smelled drugs?! I guess I will never know but I do know that she was protecting my nephew specifically from those two men. She was absolutely fearless. It was just … incredible to witness. I only wish I caught it on video. I trust dog’s intuition wholeheartedly.

I am on my 8th Ridgeback. They are truly magnificent pets! A word of advice, when your dog;s muzzle starts to turn white (like your's). it is time to get your next puppy. Your adult dog will help you train your new puppy by example . Conversely, the puppy will be good company for the older dog, keeping your old boy in good spirits during his remaining time with you. Good luck.

Totally agree, I've done this twice now and it gives the older dog a new lease of life. Only problem was in my first case the younger dog died too very soon after the older dog. She pined way for him, even though we bought another dog (Bull mastiff) to try and help. I miss all our dogs, but with the Ridgebacks there is some how just a different connection entirely, I cant put my finger on it but it totally exists.

I’ve owned my amazing , curious, sincere, loyal, beautiful, athletic, compassionate Rhodesian Ridgeback since May 2017 and I could not agree more with this video. Sedona (my Ridgeback) has truly enriched my life - I’ve owned a dog nearly my whole life - every breed from Australian Blue Heelers to a Jack Russell terrier , a red nose Pit Bull and several mixed breeds of Labrador retrievers...and I sincerely and uniquely love all the dogs I’ve been blessed with but Sedona is like my soul mate , and her zany , curious, unapologetically unique facial expressions and mannerisms as well as her athleticism and intelligence and quirky habits make her the best of the best. I adore learning about Ridgebacks now and sharing tales and enthusiasm with fellow Ridgeback owners and I’ve NEVER done that with any other breed of dog I have owned ...I love y’all - all of those who are reading and love their Ridgeback too - you’re my people 💜💋

I have a friend who used to have 2 male Rottweiler dogs maybe around 12 yrs ago. Stereotypical Rotties (big, intimidating, healthy dogs), and because they knew me, they didn't bark and/or act aggressive towards me. Then as my friend and I were shooting the breeze, we (and especially the Rotties) notice some guy walking his Ridgeback, which was also a male. The Rotties started out barking and acting dominant, but the guy's RR, also a male, was almost oblivious to the 2 Rotties' noise towards it. And as I noticed the RR was so calm, I asked if he could bring the dog over (the Rotties were secured behind a fence), and he did. What happened over the next couple mins blew my mind, was both the Rotties seemed to assume a more submissive position in the presence of the "in-charge" RR. I almost got the feeling that the reason why the Rotties' instincts told them to be more submissive is after the initial seconds of barking and trying to act all tough, it obviously didn't affect the RR in the slightest, which I think the 2 Rotties sensed, and then they knew their place. VERY impressive, ALL-AROUND dog is the RR, that's for sure.

I would walk him daily at the beach and he would do his thing then one time two Questionable Charchters started to aproach me as the sun had alkready set, asking me for money possible try to jump and rob me until they realized the dog sitting 100m by himself started to jog towards us because "Hank" also didnt trust them and they said good bye as quickly as they could. But never ever get aggressive with them, a firm talking to will do. They are super sensitive and if you're their dad then they won't want to do anything to upset you . But losing them is heartbreaking, you will really get attached to them, you just won't be able to stop yourself. Good luck.

I did exactly that 50 years ago. Got out of the Army and shortly went to a dog show in Patterson NJ. Boxer? Bull mastiff? Shepard? And then someone walked by with a Ridgeback. I found a breeder upstate and went to see. After human's greeting at the door I was introduced to the male of the house. When he tolerated me, I patted my chest and he stood up and put his paws up to my collar bones (I'm 6' 2"). SOLD. My RR became "Clyde." i never knew you could buy a "brother." Maybe the best decision in my life (except for marrying my wife, which came years later.) B-)

Years ago I lived in SB and had a close friend with an older female Rodi named Shala who was such a big and sweet girl. One day Robin spent the day at a very remote beach which you had to literally hike nearly a mile to access. She always brought Shala with her and had a friends much younger dog with her whom she was dog sitting for a few day's. The two pups just played together all day. On the long hike back to the car, the two dogs kept running way up in front of the trail beyond Robin's sights which wasn't a problem because Shala had long since proved she'd always come back to her Master Mistress. Suddenly as Robin's just walking along, peacefully enjoying the end of their great day, Shala suddenly comes running furiously back on the trail towards her with the young pup right behind her. Now, Shala had a completely different demeanor which Robin knew indicated something was up and on her radar. Shala ran right past Robin, not to her. And when Robin turned around to see where the hell she was going and focused on so Intently, she was shocked to see a naked man running up the trail towards her, holding a thick tree branch in his hands as if he had been chasing and stalking her, but not realizing that she had two dogs with her further on up the trail. She said that the look on that man's face when he saw Shala, the big and fiercely protective Rodi with that warrior band of fur sticking straight up for battle, was priceless and one of pure terror! He dropped the wooden club pronto, turned around and started running back, butt naked in the opposite direction in fear for his life and limbs! Shala continued to chase after him with the young pup being loyal and taught to do the same. Robin stood there in shock and a hysterically proud moment before calling her back and praising her! That night, the dynamic duo had some steak and crablegs for their service to Robin and Humanity. Now, how did Shala know when she was far up a winding trail, that there was a deranged and naked man stalking Robin from behind and that playtime was over? Seriously impressive are these amazing and perfected creatures! RIP the lovely Shala and Robin!

@@elinorwilliams1659 Hard to say. The first three Ridgebacks hardly shed at all, where as the latest one sheds loads, she seems to have the softest coat and her pedigree is top notch so... It might be an idea to see one of your local breeders and ask them, they may even let you pay a visit and you should be able to tell first hand. @@adventurerwannabe it honestly depends on the region. The UK RR tend to be smaller than Europe and the southern hemisphere. Mine is a healthy 57kg and his grandparents were imported from Australia, which is why he is much larger than the UK breed average. Its all to do with selective breeding. In the UK they are bred as companions, so it makes sense for them to be smaller compared to other countires; where they may still be used as working/guard dogs.
@adventurerwannabe
@adventurerwannabe 3 жыл бұрын
@@naomilastres7190 actually the Main reason why they should not be bred so large is because its bad for the dogs function as a working breed. South african breed Standard was based on function and states 37.5kg as Max ideal weight. Big ridgebacks are too slow and not agile enough...would not stand a chance in their task of dodging lion attacks while keeping them at bay

I lived in apt when I got my RR. She was crate trained from day one and was very safe, secure and calm in her crate, but I only worked PT, so not gone 8 hrs a day or anything. Over time, we left her in one room, then eventually she got free run of the house. She never had anxiety issues, even when we both worked 9-5. I think people think of crates as restriction and punishment, but with proper crate training, the dog will happily go to their crate to get a break from stimulation. Mine would get tired and sit by the bedroom door to wait to be let into her crate, it was really funny. We also spent hours at the dog park almost everyday, for lots of exercise and socialization. I loved going to dog parks, but you have to be careful with them. RR's are truly the best. My girl is 13.5, and I also grew up with one. Hard to imagine life without a RR.

Great video and a beautiful dog. I currently have 5, from 2 different litters and they are 3 and almost 2 years old. When I moved to my retirement place in Wyoming I quickly realized there was a pack of coyotes, about 8, lurking around and causing trouble. My first 3 were protective yet out numbered, so I got 2 more to even the odds. One day the coyotes were trying to get to my egg suppliers(chickens) and grass controllers (goats) . My newly formed pack of 5 chased and cornered the coyotes in a pond. There was no actual fighting, but the coyotes got the hint and have not been seen February 😁 These dogs are fearless and ferocious yet smart and athletic. They require repetitive training and treats, lol. He speaks the truth about how a RR will follow its owner. Best way to relieve separation anxiety is to have another dog around of equal size and demeanor. My 5 will have dust ups everyday it's not pouring rain. They require action, not just running. They also love to join their humans on the couch. I lost total control of my couches 😂😂😂

Mine is 3 years old about 80lbs. She is extremely protective within the home. Late at night she'll start growling at a strange noise in the middle of the night. She gets separation anxiety pretty badly. She follows me everywhere lol. Freyja just chased a rabbit around in the backyard until she succeeded. She rarely barks except when she wants to be fed or your attention. You're not alone.

In their dear sweet way, these great hunters and protectors are constantly sniffing the air. One sniff with that massive nose gives the Dog 800 times more information than we get as humans. My profession was Respiratory, so it was a no brainer to note that instead of drooling or panting Ridgebacks have a three phase inspiratory effort and quick exhalation.. Also vibration sensitive elements as periphery awareness are some of their favorite triggers. Bisquits are #1...

Just came across your Channel very good Info and Presentation Brother. Awesome Diesel as well. I agree with all you said about the personality of RR our Malcolm we have had for 4 years is attached at the hip. We travel the USA in carnival business setting up at state fairs and other events living 10 months in a 5th wheel. We do have 2 acres back home at "Winter Quaters" in Texas but are only there for the Holidays and any refurb on equipment and some how fit in two trade shows during that time to look and purchase the newest greatest rides and services. Ok just to get to a point you made about Rhodesian Ridgebacks thick skin on feet. So it is no issue during heat for them to be on pavement? The loyatly of the breed is the best I have ever had and I am sure ours is the exception but he is completely content laying on "his bed" in the trailer under the A/C vent and fan and will be in the same spot when we come every 2-3hrs to get let him out to stretch. run if possible and take care of business. Not going to lie there has been times it might have been 10hrs and the same he is chilling. I have never had a animal be able to hold #1 or #2 for amazingly extended periods of times alot longer than you or I. The poor boy has done #1 I am convinced for 2 minutes 120 seconds straight. He has never had a accident or tore anything up in the trailer other than ONE MAJOR thing. The TRASH. With this breed it is imperative to not leave the trash anywhere they can get to it and probably not even there either. I have found things I didn't know we had. Just plain loaf bread....Ate a whole brand new package left low on the counter. NEVER have a problem as long as someone is with him so he can be touching you on the couch, bed, chair and be able to have his eyes on you. Like Tommy said if you get up to do anything including your own business #1 or #2 they will be right here with you. Love our RR Malcolm and we owned previous their complete life of 12-13 years Rottweilers. The Mom and Dad as pups and their litter 2 yrs later that we kept 2 out of the 1st born and the runt. They were the best Ture Companions, Protectors, Smart, Loyal and Loving till there very last Breath. Miss them daily. RIP Zeus, Zena, Zoey, & Harley. I know why Harley out of all Z names. We went to the scum that had another couple come to pick her up and two weeks later we find her fur missing bones showing and the look of death in her eyes. Needless to say the Man was in Jail headed for a 20yr Fed Prision sentence and the Wife well she had her own issues and we just wanted the baby out of the environment and home with not only his Fur Parents but his Human Parents. She was so well taken care of by her sister Zena and of course Zeus and Zoe. She was without a doubt Daddies Girl both Zeus and Myself. Sorry for long winded story just very excited to find another person with the respect and love for the breed . GOD Bless, Thank You. Be Safe and Stay Healthy!

Onto my third one currently and my first boy as well as my first puppy - got the other two as rescues. Having from a pup is waaaaay easier but still a challenge. One thing I’m slightly apprehensive about is how big he’ll get. The heaviest the girls ever got was 36 kilos. Little dude is 7 months and already the same! It’s training training training solid at the moment, but he’s delightful. Agree with everything you said about the breed. I’ll never have a dog of any other. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

I rescued mine at 4 months. I had 3 other male dogs, one RR/Mastiff mix, one Akbash and a Redbone Coonhound on my 25 acre farm. My pure RR was not only a fearless guardian, but also great with my horses, cows, pigs, chickens and ducks. He is a gentle dog until he senses something is amiss. Not a huge barker, especially compared to my hound, but when he does, it’s definitely for a reason. By far, the most loyal and clingy, but very stubborn and only responded to positive reinforcement with training. He is by far the most likely to attack a predator (we have coyotes, bears and mountain lions) without any care for his own well being. I live this breed and they are absolutely stunning creatures. Not a dog for a novice or timid owner.

She was 5 years old female dog abadonded in kennel in dog sheilter as a abused dog which can attack to everybody. When we take our first together look to the eyes we loved each other in 1 sec. I just ,,run" into her kennel and give her so big hug and she just piss by happines. I take her home imidiatelly. She was the biggest and the breavest dog what i ever saw. Our previous Ridgebacks were fed kibble, our new boy will be fed a raw diet which has been professionally formulated to ensure proper nutrition. If you have Netflix watch "Pet Fooled", it will give you a real perspective on the lack of oversight concerning dog food production. You will question all commercial kibble. Perhaps they'd do better in cooler weather, but anything north of 75 degrees or 3 miles and they're worthless! 😂 I've had THREE and they have all been different, but have all been calm, assertive, stubborn, loyal, and eager for a treat or 12. My recommentdation is if you train your Ridgeback (sight hound) to come when called, you will save yourself a lot of frustration. Oh, and keep them lean like Diesel.
