Wow, indeed Mr. Humphrey! By the way, I saw something a while back that might come in handy for bowl making. This one wood turner had a tool mounted to the lathe that used a curved blade to cut the inside of the bowl out as a solid plug. He got a whole other, smaller bowl out of it to match, which otherwise would have been horsed out as wood shavings for his stove. Keep on keeping on!

Agreed! It is a quite good piece of maple. The combination of natural curl and the ambrosia is great. And your turning makes it a wonderful salad or fruit bowl. However . . . . . . . all that beautiful wood on the floor as shavings. What a shame. I don't know if it would have been possible to core a piece this size but it would have been nice if something were to be possible. If you ever run across another piece like this one would you consider bandsawing off the bottom and cutting out the center? Still, this is a beautiful bowl and nothing can take anything away from that.👍👍Thank you for sharing. This is great piece to kick off 2023. The past years have been entertaining and educational. I presume 2023 will be the same. Have a great New Year and stay safe.🙂🙂
@RHumphrey Жыл бұрын
Thank you, my friend! ...is it really a shame though? I made the best of that chunk of wood by proper orientation, not a lot of activity in the wood as I worked down through the inside. You're a woodturner so you know there's always going to be shavings piled under the lathe. I hear you, in that we should strive to waste as little as possible, but I honestly feel I did this chunk of wood some lasting justice. (not tooting my own horn, just saying I'm happy with the results) Be well and safe and you get your new shop set up!! 😊
@glencrandall7051 Жыл бұрын
@@RHumphrey Yes, I do agree that you did justice by that piece of maple. The new shop is progressing but a bit slowly. The building is up and insulated. The garage doors were delivered but not yet installed. My son in law and I are sheeting the walls for additional insulation. When that is complete I will have the electrical done. Then the fun can begin.

Gorgeous bowl, heirloom quality. The simple design you chose really highlights the properties of the wood. One thing I couldn’t figure out is what ‘figure’ in wood is? Nice work.
@RHumphrey Жыл бұрын
Thank you very much, Lynda! Figure refers to the patterns in the grain that often look like waves. They can take many other shapes, like feathering, quilting, and even flames. It takes place in trees at the crotches and also along the length of the trunk or limbs due to abnormal growth for many different reasons. When finished to a fine degree, the figure often looks holographic and shows depth when none exists.

I wonder if you could save some of this wood for a second bowl, next time using a trepanning tool. Maybe this way: cutting the bottom section, trepanning (cutting an internal circle) to form a new round wood block/blank and a thick wood ring - glue the ring to the base and turn them to make the bowl. Now you still have the internal wood blank for a second bowl. What do you think?
@RHumphrey Жыл бұрын
I prefer a traditional solid bowl when that is my goal. I wouldn't want glued joints like you're referring to, to interfere with the natural flow of this grain.
@Smallathe Жыл бұрын
@@RHumphrey Good point about the grain. Too bad there is no way to save the middle part that is always removed. Thanks!

Beautiful chunk of wood and you have worked it to perfection, amazing colours and grain. Just a quick question Rod, do you ever use a higher grit over a 1000?
@RHumphrey Жыл бұрын
Thanks very much, John! I have gone higher than 1000 on bowls, but Honestly the glassy feel and look of a 1000 grit finish seems just right... unless I'm finishing a pen or other smalls with a CA glue and micromesh finish (up to 12000 grit) I have received some very nasty letters and emails from supposed woodturners, chastising me for not finishing to 2000 grit, and people bragging about how they don't use sandpaper below 220 grit, lol... but, 1000 seems right on the money to me.
