Alright guys I have to chime in on this and give a differing opinion. This is a VERY aggressive guide that has you switching to Hammers way too soon. You just don't have the mana early on and you're gonna be burning through mana potions. Let me recommend sticking with Holy Fire/Zeal until you get Spirit in at least 1 hand, preferably both hands. Then switch to hammers, but before then the Mana is just too big of an issue. Rykker is an experienced player and should have pointed that out. Mana is a HUGE issue if you switch to hammers this early. You only have like 40 mana. It's a VERY BIG DEAL.

exactly my thoughts. this guide is useless and the dude has no idea. holyfire/zeal pretty much means no mana requirement. you can breeze that way with a team all the way to hell

same with fohdin, it's just better to go holy fire/zealot till you got spirits & insight, the 25mana cost of foh is brutal early on, you can easily farm in nightmare with it till you got the required gear.

Agree, I would rather stay in Holy Fire then respec into FOH around 35-40 after getting dual Spirits/Lore. Hammers are a opting to aim and with the biffs to FOH it’s a more streamlined approach to leveling.

I go 3 into fire resist, 4 into zeal and then max Holy Fire, then finish maxing fire resist. You will be wrecking normal mode just by walking by. Then reset to Hammers or Fist of Heavens after you craft an Insight Polearm for your Merc. (You can use mediation aura and cast Fist if Heavens if you dont want to wait, but Hammers needs concentration aura to be top tier.)

This is all bulshet. Just prepare your Zeal by hitting one point to Sacrafice on 2 lvl. After that hit one point to Might aura - preparing for Holy fire. At lvl 6 - you start to put skills ONLY TO HOLY FIRE TILL YOU MAX IT OUT. You need the RANGE of the aura - the most. The extra points goes to Resist Fire. You are looking for Blue/Yellow/Socketed Scepter with +++ Holy Fire skill. Any Blue/Yellow shield with +++ resistence and 2-3 sockets, which you put Ruby, Saphir, Topaz there. Tal+Eth Armor and Nef+Tir helmet - later into Orth+Sol. Rings - Yellow/Blue - Resists + Str/Dex stats. Amulet ++ to Paladin skills, Str/Dext stats, resistence, attack/cast speed. You dont re-skill till Nightmare Act 4, where you should be 55+ if you kill everything walking around and having some more fun without any guides and builds. Then - reskill into Fist of Heavens, after you prepare 4 socket Crystal sword (Spirit) and 4 socket Paldin shield (spirit). Move to Hell and start farming act1 and act2 till you have better gear.

Thanks for the solid guide. While I admit hammerdin is one of the best builds in the game I prefer to level up to late nightmare/early hell as holy shock paladin. With a fast weapon It can make quick work of any non-lightning immunes. When you synergize it with resist lightning, it provides huge lightning damage bonus on your zeal attacks.

People complaining about the guide. Hammers is the way to go. I guess some people aren’t used to slamming pots but yes holy fire is OP but the transition to hammers at a4 chaos is insane. I tested both builds and hammers just shreds. Yes it’s so fun running around holy fire but this is the most optimized build to clear fast and get to hell quickest. Rhykker knows his stuff. I’m a 30+ year old d2 HC veteran. This is the best build.

@Nggaplz The only immunes are the act 2 skele summoner things so deff hammers. The Smiter is specifically to mule and do ubers and the zealer is probably bested by the nova sorc for key farming actually.

Great guide, and I'm assuming you will be doing this for each class as a series. With that in mind, I think it would be great if you start off each guide with a quick summary (almost like a TLDW) of which skills or general playstyle the build will focus on in the Starting, Early, Mid, and Lategame, so the viewer is able to conceptualize what is being recommended, rather than feeling like just blindly following the guide point by point. For example, just a short introduction like "this build will focus on becoming a Holy Fire Zealot early on, and eventually transition into a Hammerdin which you can take all the way into Endgame" would have done so much for both new and experienced players, while still making them want to check back to it every few levels to really optimize the progression.

I would recommend trying this build at end game before you start NG. That way you can respec soon after if you don't like it.

I just did the respec and made the switch from Holy Fire/Zeal to Blessed Hammer and the game is now ruined for me. I'm in act 3, I have all the equipment reccomended and I can't damage a thing. Not only that, but Rykker said get strength to 43 and put the rest into Vitality. Well turns out Blessed Hammer uses mana and I'm running out every 2 seconds. My character/game is ruined, Idk if I can respec again to go back to a holy fire build or what but Blessed Hammer sucks, I can't do a thing right now

I was very sceptical about going hammers so early seeing all these comments but ive played with it for about 30 minutes now and it seems to be very good and super strong. Yes mana needs go up but not at bad a the sorcerers. Aslong as you have the enemy to your left around to your front you basically 1shot everything and it large groups can nust spam and kill most so overall i think its a good thing

Try Holy Fire sometimes for normal. Starting a level like 7 destroys the screen. The only reason to ever go BH this early is if you are doing a no respec. Holy fire will fall off in nightmare (act 4 has some hard areas as well). But its just not worth skipping the best normal leveling spec there is to keep one respec.

Hey great guide! The did fix the sacrifice range bug in 2.4! It was an amazing fix. Something to add, as it is super important, you can also pick up broad swords or long swords to get 4os from sok quest, it’s sometimes faster to find, but can cost a few more str or dex attributes.

Another thing that you can do if you are finding difficult to get good equipment is to get Chance of getting items. This can not only help to find yellow rare object but also set green or legendary ones. You can find this % Chance on normal or uncommon items and you also have the option to input Topaz gem in armor to improve even more this luck attribute. I can tell you it worked pretty decently for me and it's giving me other options to play aside following this guide step by step.

Or if your lazy like me, you skip much of this, shop at akara for bonus to holy fire scepter as soon as you can and put points into holy fire and fire resist, you hit less fast but everything dies quite fast without actually hitting them as they already did before the 2.4 buff. You can take zeal on lvl 12, but I did this build with a friend of mine he took zeal and I put into Fire Resist and my kill speed remained higher as most things die before you actually hit them and this will speed you through the early game while collecting high amounts of experience for free (think I put 1 rank in zeal when I got to the Spirit stage). Save strength/dex gems for your merc (you might need them to have your merc be able to carry the polearm) and try to get a good savage polearms from the cube, 1 Diamond + 1 Staff + 1 Kris + 1 Belt --> Savage Polearm Class Weapon, later you can chose from more options in merc, cold rogue with insight is an option now. Normal will be a complete breeze, cow or baal till you're level 45 (cows die from second aura burst if you have NO gear) before going to NM push on till it gets hard (I usually hit that either act 4 or 5 before 2.4, but it depends allot on what you find, as long as you pass act 2 before needing a respec your fine) and then you can use your respec (or not as you can get to hell on pure holy fire), in 2.4 a good respec option would be FoH+Holy Bolt (though I should mention I am not a fan of the Hammerdin, its strong but lame imo), FoH build will be slow in act 2 (as many builds are), but it is very nice in Chaos and more versatile then most builds, switching from Conviction to another aura in demon/undead invested areas doesn't lose you much dps as the Holy Bolts deal most of the screen damage, the lightning is just main target. Just try and get bonus to skills / fire skills / HF where you can, work on defence and don't forget to laugh maniacally when whiping the floor with Andariel :) Its not very gear dependend (though lucky drops make it allot stronger ofcourse) and your not spending time allot in town if you don't want (mana not an issue as normal attack works just fine and many enemies die before you get to them or when they get in melee range anyway).

I've been testing this since I want to not start with Sorc for once. The kill speed is actually pretty good but one thing that annoyed the hell out of me was Diablo and his never-ending Red Lightning. Do you guys Shoot bow? Run around him until he eventually dies? I want to actually do something besides running around, but it seems like trying to melee, despite the high fire damage, actually puts you in danger and it's better to just pull more mobs and run around. Is this correct?

@@Avermra There is no single answer to how you kill diablo normal I think, depends on your gear and level. Diablo is usually to most difficult part of the normal journey and only a few builds will chew him up easily. I usually level to atleast 27 when going after him (this build has quite an easy leveling grind, just so I can equip a Lore helm, the +1 skill is very useful as is the +30 lightning res when facing Mr. D. I try to get max Lightning resist and as high Fire resist as I can, then circle him and go melee whenever he leaves an opening, circling again whenever he does lightning or hellfire. You can actually overlevel more before progressing if you want as Chaos works up to 34 without penalties. Damage on the weapons is not very important, speed is allot more useful and when taking on high health targets speed even beats bonus to skills, also the high attack speed allows for skipping Zeal longer to have more points into HF and syn. A great weapon for this build if you want to take down bosses (or prefer killing by swinging instead of walking past) is a "Steel" Scimitar or Flail, Pally's get a bonus to attack speed with swords and Scimitar is already fast and a Flail is already very good, bonus is runes and 2 sock Scimitar/Flail are quite easy to get (shop Fara act 2). A bow is often a good and reasonably easy option as well, at level 27 you could even create an Insight bow in the current patch if you managed to get a Sol (in theory atleast, 4 sock bow very rare in normal, can drop from DoH1 and up though) or an Edge if you have a spare Amn (edge is useful to have anyway, but as Spirit is more important you probably won't have a spare Amn), even a Zephyr charsi bow will work pretty well (tbh it's pretty nice to have in this build till due to the movement speed its a great W weapon). What often slow down killing Diablo is a lack of Attack Rating, thus gear that adds to AR is very welcome, as is a Wand of Lower Resist and keep your eyes open for a + Holy Fire scepter, I often get one with little time spend shopping with at least +1 and often +2 is easy as well, +3 is not easily found but definitely doable if you regularly go shopping. Optional nowadays you could use an act 3 Fire merc, less attack rating than an Act 2 (and less damage to D unless you already have a very high AR), but Enchant stays longer than the instant dying Act 2 merc when diablo even looks in its direction, this is ofcourse only a really interesting option in early game. In the end it depends allot on what gear you managed to get before facing him and which level you are (not only because you get more skillpoints, but also because higher level means more chance on hitting Mr. D). With bad luck I'd go bow, with a bit of luck or enough shopping I'd go melee. Even with a not very good setup he can be downed in 60 sec or less (theoretically below 20 sec is very doable depening on the gear you find, especially a Lower Res Wand helps allot).

I'm not a good player and like other folks here thought my paladin was done after the respec because of the mana. The dopamine hit I was getting from the holy fire setup was gone now that I wasn't swinging my melee weapon. In my ignorance, I pictured a paladin being a platewearer that would be doing a mix of some melee hits with light mana usage as this "hammerdin" I kept hearing about. So I decided to shift things up a bit to switch on/off the play style I guess --> In the options, I checked the box that allows you to use/cast whatever ability with a single keyboard press as opposed to the legacy style. With that in place, I actually set my blessed hammer to a keyboard button, functionally removing it as my main attack. Then I just kept my left mouse click as a normal attack which did puny damage, no doubt. But I was mixing the melee and hammers together and getting used to not burning through mana so quick. In order to complement the mana, I ended up (probably not smart) throwing a couple of Tir runes on a socketed scepter that had +x with blessed hammers. This was giving me +4 mana on each kill, so it helped to have close mobs where I could spam the hammer and gain some mana at least. After several levels and making it all the way to Act 5, I had moved almost exclusively to using blessed hammer BUT kept it bound to my keyboard for when I wanted to use that left click melee occasionally. I wrecked Baal at lvl 36 with those hammers. I figure once I'm able to make the spirit sword then I might ditch melee altogether. All that said, I wouldn't completely give up on your pally yet if you feel like you hit a wall like I did...

Before I watched this video I had a scepter with 2+ meditation, 2+ blessed hammer, 1+ vengeance, with two open sockets... After watching this video I whipped that scepter out of my stash that Ive been saving for this exact build and Added two tir runes for 4+ mana after each kill... And between fights swap over to meditation. Hardly using any mana potions😎 i'm at level 25, act 2 lost city

Yeah I wouldn't suggest respec to hammers until at least level 25 imo while hopefully also wielding 2 "spirit" (sword/shield) NOT a spirit + ancients pledge as he suggests id skip the ancients pledge as your in norm or nm at this point and its not really needed, this is something only the paladin can take advantage of this early and is a huge waste to not do. No idea why Rhykker would in a leveling guide nerf a player by having them swap to hammers that early and completely derail the leveling speed in a leveling guide.

OK, I absolutely hated the switch to hammers at such a low level. It's completely impractical and took all the joy from my game. You run out of mana after a few attacks, the stupid hammers are useless in narrow spaces and you're not yet strong enough to tank properly. I actually dropped that toon and decided to do a new one, since respec is limited. The first part, with fire aura is great, but that switch to hammers seems either a bad idea or maybe a bad idea at such a low level.

So noticing the build tends to not pay much heed to Defense from physical attacks. Guessing that is picked up somehow? Would be great to get a shield that has a very high block rate and defense rating with 3 sockets, but not seeing those. Maybe will be at nightmare level?

Take the crystal sword to someone in normal act 5, but make sure it's a crystal sword that you get from the cow level which cannot be opened until after normal. Yeah please explain this Rykker

So in act 5 You receive reward from first quest that can make sockets in weapon/Armor. To have crystal sword with only 4 sockets no more no less You need to farm for it in Cow level on normal difficulty (that's possible to open only after You completed normal difficulty). Once You get that crystal sword with 4 sockets no more no less You can use to make yourself a Spirit rune word.

Base skill level is the amount of points you put into a skill when leveling. Active skill level is your base skill point with any + to skills from gear you wear. So let's say you put 5 skill points into Might Aura and you wear a spirit sword (+2 to all skills). In this case the base skill level is 5 and the active skill level is 7. Hope that helps

Yea i got a lvl 50 holy fire is insane in normal and nightmare just one shots everything on screen while i just run around looting chests lol damage not great in hell best to respec then i prefer to keep this char for low lvl farming though as it can kill faster than a lvl 99 sorc on low lvl stuff

Important, please give people heads up on not wasting the socket quest ahead of time. Most people will run through the game and your video progressively. This means that by the time they hear your comment about “ hopefully you have saved your quest reward …” it ends up being too late, and you’re F’d. NOW WHAT?😢

Im a lvl 33 paladin with spirit in one hand. Just switched from holyfirezeal to hammerdin. Definitely would recommend to waiting till at least nightmare mode and seeing how you like it before making the switch. And spirit in one hand at least is extremely importany so early on. Its basically a must if you dont have something like insight on a merc which you probably wont pre nightmare. It feels good but i might jist do den of evil and wait till i have spirit one hanf or both and definitely insight on merc. Can anyone say which would be better for keeping mana up? Dual wield spirit vs spirit in one hand and merc with insight?

It is cool to see Diablo 2 guides. When I players back in the day I would take all points in all skills, equip wathever I found and stop playing at normal dificulty, because why play the same game but harder?

It depends on why you play the game in the first place. If you want to just take in the atmosphere, engage with the game systems and experience the story, playing again on a harder difficulty really isn't important or even sensible. But many people play arpgs to experiment with every inch of their class and see how far they can push their limits, utilizing every way to gain more power. To those, the first playthrough is just a tutorial Also it's not just a binary option, like always there's a spectrum

love the guide, but the scepter and chipped gem recipe does not transmute in the cube. Nothing happens. at least not in online game, have not tried in other mode.

I’m act 2 rn as a paladin and it seems I’ve gone too middle grown with my build. So with any build it seems like you want to leave alone most of the skill points and insert them into one or two of the skills on the tree?

I favor a necro wand with 10fcr and 2 mana after each kill vs +3 to BH, and nadir helm or 2 tir helm, and 3 tir armor, this will get you going with little mana need unless you deal with single traget. Res can be shoped on gloves boots and belt. Oh and maxing out BH roght away will starve you in mana, so do 10BH and max concentration, then after do BH 2 synergy over and over

Yeah holy fire till late NM for sure. Its just too good. Free melee damage free aoe damage. 2.5 update - Still true. Dont go Bh so early, its such a trap (litterally just remade my guy , why would i want 1/2 the damage with 10x worse damage application and mana issues)? HF + Blessed Aim act 2 merc destroy everything including fire enchanted, clear entire screens while running. Switch off it in NM yes NM act 4. To BH or FoH. Another update - Holy Fire -> FoH is the way. The clear is better the resist are even less of an issue. I would say the exception is if you run some BH + Smite hybrid for bossing (But FoH does this as well).

Tbh, I hate those strict leveling guides, especially parts when they restrict you into stat point allocation. In normal it's really easy not to die with not perfect allocation but you can put onto yourself some dandy-looking armors early on. And even make Stealth in a good armor. So you can without any thought put strength points while your health is enough ofc

because pts in vit are better than a slightly higher def armor for stealth. Defense is no where as important in d2 as resistances are.

@@SentryxVoid Defence is important when you know how to use it. And don't forget fashion aspect. Lots of characters have some way to multiply defence and 200% from 17 and 250 are quite the numbers.
