Since making this video, I have played a variety of other rhythm games. Gonna post a short addendum here: Rotaeno - S tier: The perfect mobile rhythm game, and the one that works best on a phone. Uses the gyroscope for the original gameplay mechanic of tilting the device to reach notes, and features a goofy yet endearing story. The developers also seem to be invested in frequent content updates for this game. Deemo - S tier: Really fun gameplay, beautiful and entrancing art and music, and an excellent story. No complaints. A Dance of Fire and Ice - A tier: Despite occasionally falling into tedious repetitiveness like Geometry Dash, ADOFAI does an excellent job portraying rhythms in a unique way that becomes more and more readable over time. The Neo Cosmos DLC is also really fun and introduces a lot of interesting gimmicks. Pulsus - A tier: Why hadn't anyone thought of a number pad rhythm game before? It makes for some really satisfying gameplay. Fuser - A tier: Not exactly a rhythm game, more of a really fun and user-friendly DJ sim. Some of the beats you make end up going way too hard, completely by accident. Synth Riders - B tier: Beat Saber is good enough that what feels like a less engaging version of it is still fun. Beatstar - B tier: An interesting cross between generic mobile game and rhythm game. Features a hit or miss soundtrack heavy on pop music and decently fun 3 key gameplay. It's missing important rhythm game features, such as multiple difficulties for songs, and unfortunately blocks you from playing at times like many other free mobile games. Musynx - C tier: An overly cutesy VSRG with a horrible song selection, but it's a nice way to delve into the world of 6 key. Cytus II - C tier: Admittedly I haven't played this one too much, but I find the gameplay to be unreadable and unsatisfying and the story elements to be overly confusing. Friday Night Funkin - C tier: Cool art and music, but the base game gameplay is too basic and easy to be fun. I get there's mods to make it more challenging/interesting, but I'm not counting those as part of the game. I'll continue to update this as I play more new games.

Short Note: Although it may seem fnf might be C tier, the community behind the game isn't

Man I hope you got into main Taiko games as well they're so much fun to look at! Also, have you played Deemo as well? That's the game which made me discover what's so interesting about the genre as well (also the story, artstyle, music itself is god tier and so on) EDIT: About Friday night Funkin, the Newgrounds flash version actually fixed a lot of input issues and added a lot of stuff. It's not the best but the artstyle and music make a lot for it, don't led the "fame" let you down it has some great stuff within og content and mods EDIT 2: Now that I think about it, why people don't consider Patapon on the list? It's such a charming game, if you haven't played it that's another one I strongly recommend!

Thanks for such a long comment - I'll try to respond to all of it. I haven't played any official taiko games because playing on a controller would be quite challenging for me and I don't own a taiko drum. I've heard of Deemo, and have played some of its music in other games but have not played it yet. I tried FNF after this video released, and while the art and music were charming but the sub-par gameplay stopped it from having any lasting replay value. The base game was too easy to be fun and the mods I tried did not have very great mapping. I do appreciate how many of the nearly game-breaking issues have been fixed though. I've never heard of Patapon but I'd look into it.

regarding osu: skinning allows you to modify the playfield any way you want. Most (if not all) regular players go for minimal skins, therefore removing all of the flashy sh$#@ The ONE issue stable osu! still has is, *KIAI TIME* . That thing is SO annoying and there's no way to turn it off (you can only delete them from the charts). Lazer's kinda on the right path, but it seems its developement's mainly focused on standard ^^" PS: It's kind of a pain in the a$@# to set up, but you could try beatoraja for BMS (IIDX but free and community driven/created content)

I agree with my placement on that even more now than when I made this because I've been getting into VSRGs more recently. I much prefer the accuracy focused gameplay of a game like Etterna, which values every single millisecond away from perfect you are. I also prefer the more diverse mapping styles of that game, the better ranking system that highlights a variety of skills, the better optimization and smoother feel (which helps massively with reading), and the ability to fully customize gameplay and rate mods.

As someone with 900 hours and 5 years of experience in osu standard, I'd like to comment on some of the things you said about the game, as a lot of it is outright incorrect and makes the game sound much more one dimensional than it is. The fact that the only way to consistently gain ranks is by playing short farm maps, is a misconseption by most of the community. This USED to be the case, however now, long maps are a far better way to gain pp. If you look at the game's highest pp plays, they are dominated by long, consistency aim and consistency speed maps. A 5 minute 5.7 star map, usually will give more pp than a 1 minute 6.5 star map. So I'd like to rephrase what you said to make it correct: the most consistent way for a ONE DIMENSIONAL AIM PLAYER to get ranks is by playing short pp farm maps. The pp system makes it possible to gain ranks by playing this maps, HOWEVER, the further you get and the higher pp plays you need to set, it becomes less and less feasible for you to gain ranks by playing short farm maps. The pp system now insentivizes players (especially after the last rework) to play long, consistency based maps to gain ranks. And regarding your complaints about music, they are completely absurd. I'd like to preface by saying that if you combined the music selection from the other three gamemodes, you'd maybe get half of what you can find in osu!std. Any song you find on the other gamemodes, there is a 90% chance someone has made it on standard. If you only play maps with anime music, that's your fault, not the game's fault. Aim maps are mainly anime music. Flow aim and slower streammaps are much more diverse, with everything ranging from very weeb songs (ie: super nuko world) to metal (dragonforce, gyze, galneryus, etc.) to relaxing electronic music (ie: sidetracked day). Speed maps are similarly diverse, consisting mainly of electronic and video game music. Tech maps have a lot of dubstep (ie: camellia songs) There's also a lot of speedcore songs, in the form of mainly Renard/Lapfox Trax and Kobaryo. The game has songs that you enjoy listening to, you just don't have the skill to play those maps. That's on you. Get better. Or play with nofail, that exists for a reason. On the other hand...I agree with everything you said about o!m, etterna better.

i see you edited your comment to add stuff about music, and while yeah i can find songs i enjoy even at my skill level, i still feel like osu standard has a worse selection than most every other rhythm game i've played. there are definitely exceptions to this rule, such as musynx and osu catch. taiko and mania have very different song selections from what i've seen edit: i'm also not sure how good music being locked behind difficulty barriers makes the overall song selection any better... if it was good, shouldn't it still be good across all different difficulties?
@mooshiros7053
@mooshiros7053 2 жыл бұрын
@@northern_limit I'm not saying that the song is better in the harder difficulty, just that there are more good songs in the harder difficulty ranges. People tend to prefer to make difficult maps than easy maps, and as such there are more difficult maps than easy maps. That means that the song selection is more varied in the harder difficulty ranges. By my experience this is pretty similar across all the rhythm games I've played (osu!standard, osu!mania, osu!taiko, etterna, and clone hero). In osu this is magnified by the fact that longer songs require less difficulties than shorter songs. So while the anime ops are required to have easier difficulties in order to be ranked since they're shorter, a lot of the longer (and better) songs only need 1 or 2 difficulties, and since those difficulties tend to be difficult, are locked behind a difficulty barrier. Hope that made sense.

Short farm Maps are not at all the only way to gain rank in osu. It's just the easiest way. Also they are literally working on a way to get rid of combo scoring as we speak. Songs you enjoy are not mapped? That's fucking cap. Damn near every song is in Osu because the mapping Community is bigger than most other rhythm game communities combined LMAO. In addition to that there are more featured artists in osu then literally every other rhythm game combined. Like over 200 at this point You literally quit the game because you just didn't look hard enough. Little did you know there was a search bar...
