I hate how inflexible Lirin is. I mean, yeah, he was willing to see Kaladin's struggles with mental health, but he's so convinced that his way is the only way. He's totally unwilling to see protecting from anyone else's perspective and yet seems to want everyone to see it from his. And anyone who doesn't, or does not direct agree, becomes monstrous in his eyes. Sometimes it seems like that to him, nothing is worth fighting for; like he would give up his own family for peace. Obviously, I don't think he would do that, but that's the subtle feeling I get from him since he takes his ideology to such extremes.
@zhazhagab0r4 жыл бұрын
Shallan has lived so long with her self-hatred and self-judgement that it literally fractured her personality. She needs someone like Adolin who offers genuine unconditional love. Adolin has been set up throughout the series as that supporter- for Renarin, Kaladin, Shallan, Maya- he doesn't offer all the answers to them, but this unconditional support and love is what leads directly to Maya's growth.
@ebnovels4 жыл бұрын
I don’t think someone should need someone to be whole. It’s good to have people love and support you, but NEEDING another person in order to have stability mentally is-from what I understand-not necessarily advised.
@zhazhagab0r4 жыл бұрын
@@ebnovels Not necessarily that she needs him to be whole, but that she did need help. The help that Adolin offered was the help she needed in order to heal. She doesn't heal because of Adolin (SHE is the one who finally confronts her own self-hatred), but his acceptance gives her the courage to finally do what needs to be done. People do need help sometimes- not a crutch, but a boost.
@ebnovels4 жыл бұрын
I do think people need help for sure, I just disagree with the idea that she needs a person (in this case, Adolin), because saying she needs someone like Adolin versus saying she needs help are different things in my mind. This is from sitting in on a therapy session for a family member. The therapist made it very clear that support systems are of course good, but that reliance can’t be placed on others, because others won’t always do things right, others are going to make their own mistakes, others can’t always be there for you, etc. So I just get a little curious about word choice in these instances, since saying someone needs someone can imply certain things! Hopefully that made sense 😄

I think Lirin weighs on Kaladin as much as Dalinar does to Adolin. As Lirin is yelling at Kaladin in the hospital there are descriptions of starting to feel heavy and tired again. I think that scene was to show that a lot of the reason Kaladin is so hard on himself and so depressed is because Lirin has instilled in Kaladin that killing makes you a monster. Kaladin is fighting against that to do what he believes is right but Adolin is doing the same. He is defying his father in small ways while still doing what he thinks is right because he knows that Dalinar is fighting for what is right. Also giving himself for judgment was a smart move. I don't dislike Adolin though so is easier for me to not see every move he makes as bad.

Each stormlight archive book does an extremely good job of focusing in on the themes of the order of knights radiant the book is about. Rhythm of War is about Willshapers, and a lot of sections in this book really speak to the idea of “I will forge my own path.”, one specific example being how sons are different men from their fathers. I’m about to finish Part 3, and wow, I have NO complaints at all. None! If we continue this way, then there is a high chance this will be my favorite book. I love how Part 2 is so chill and calm...and then something happens that reminds you something nefarious is looming in the background such as Adolin and Shallan’s date and gazing at the starspren, which was such a beautiful scene and then in the next chapter we have those Tukari attacking them, same case with Kaladin drinking with Teft(a fun scene)and then we flash back to the Fused getting closer and closer. Speaking of the Fused, one thing I CANNOT get over is that the early reviews didn’t talk about these new antagonists. They are PHENOMENAL. Each antagonist involved is just...chef’s kiss and I finally understand why Amaram, Ialai and Torol got killed off. I love Raboniel and there is a certain scene in Part 3 involving Raboniel where um...hmmm...there is a lot more to her. I was so shocked when Lirin snapped. Thus far, we always see him as this chill man who can keep a level head and when he exploded at Kaladin- what a way to end Part 2. Now, when Kaladin saved Teft, I understood where he is coming from, I can’t fault him for being himself. But Lirin had a point, sometimes Kaladin really has to use his head rather than his heart, I mean, that was what got him into the “and for my boon” situation. I love how Sanderson makes us see both sides of this situation and not make one side ultimately right. I love how Navani took charge in this part and how Sanderson handles Kaladin’s depression with so much expertise. So far, ROW is doing everything I wanted in Oathbringer, us seeing a powerful new antagonists, Vyre, Raboniel, heck, Lezian is horrifying(and also somehow Taravangian), Adolin finally getting an arc, Kaladin’s depression tackled full hand, more Navani, more of the Ghostbloods and who they REALLY are, Shallan’s sickness...ahhh, I love this book so much! I’m only left with about 38% of the book to read, and here’s to praying those parts are blow me away. This book could actually top Words Of Radiance in my opinion, and that’s saying something because WOR was Sanderson at his best.

Syl is the greatest. Also, Adolin is one of my favorite characters. One thing you kind of didn't mention about when he was leaving, is that Dalinar was trying to imply that if he didn't follow in Dalinar's footsteps, he was heading toward being like Taravangian. To which Adolin said something along the lines of it not just being one or the other and just because he wasn't like Dad (who killed his mom) it didn't mean he was going to end up being a Taravangian.
@ebnovels4 жыл бұрын
I think that’s an interesting thing to point out, simply because I kind of agree with Adolin, but also think that scene highlights how privileged he is. He killed someone important in their society and his only punishment is his father trying to guide him in the right direction. When Kaladin demanded a duel from Amaram, he was put in prison. But I think your point was that Adolin did get some of his frustration out? Which is true, I just want him to get the really angry feelings out 😂

@@ebnovels Well, Dalinar killed his own wife (even if it was an "accident.") Wouldn't it be hypocritical for him to punish Adolin for killing someone who was literally threatening both of them? Oh man, I hope Adolin doesn't have to fight Kaladin. I ship that friendship SO much lol. Ever since Kal helped Adolin in thqt 4:1 dual and then Adolin went to jail on principle for Kal, I've subconsciously made up little friendship scenes in my mind - almost like boring mini fanfics between those two. I've read a lot of actual fanfic with these two as well... so perhaps I'm biased! To be fair, Kal DID used to (and still does to some extent) worry about failing his father. Also, Dalinar has WAY more authority and gravitas than Lirin. It feels natural to me that he wants his dad's approval. Not too long ago Adolin stood up to his dad and refused to be King. He not only has to deal with the normal "wanting your parents to be proud of you" like Kaladin, but also the expectation from everyone else to follow in his dad's steps (and the other accomplished Kholin family memebers for that matter). Adolin is swimming in a sea of radiants and is coping WAY better than I would be (I'd be jealous and depressed all the time). I just wish we had more of the behind the scenes conversation Adolin and Shallan. It felt like a lot got edited out or something... as if Brandon had to swap out some dialogue between them in order to get all of Shallans inner monologues/bpd "right". I'm on board with the theory that Adolin becomes an edgedancer eventually and revives the bond with Maya somehow - or perhaps have a new or partial type of bond that may be different from anything we've seen before. I'd be ok if he didn't become radiant though. It might be helpful to have a few main characters that never bond spren for perspective. Anyway, I love seeing others comments and thoughts on these videos!

I loved the Kaladin quotes about depression as well as him speaking to his dad about himself. I thought it was a little hysterical for him to tell Teft "you're just an addict. You don't have battle shock" (paraphrased above). Kal should know better than to tell someone else how they feel.

+1 to pretty much everything. I find it baffling that in a series where characters aim at really high moral grounds, take responsibility even for things they can't be fully blamed for, and question the need for killing even in the face of apocalypse... Adolin seems to be presented as the best of them all, whether he kills Sadeas and hides it, or butchers a squad of people, there are no second thoughts, neither from him, nor Shallan, nor the narrative.
@ebnovels4 жыл бұрын
I could lay into Adolin so much more, but I try to hold back, since I know a lot of people love and relate to him 😅
@Ailvara4 жыл бұрын
@@ebnovels It's amazing, really. In many ways he's the blandest and most WYSIWYG character, and yet... most polarising. I think a video about everything wrong with this character would be amazing, both on its own and as an intro to discussion. I understand why you wouldn't "destroy" him here, but a separate video that anyone who'd be too disturbed about could easily avoid would be great.

@@HarrowHark9 Fandom is for everyone, not only people who think the same way you do. And if you think shipping is the only reason to not love the character, you're only proving you need a video.

I like Adolin for Shallan. I know their motives are questionable at times, and I would like to have Adolin to be a better flosh out character. But those two need each other and I don't want either of them to turn evil, but I feel they might in some way. Also I feel that the way he feels about his father while not the best reason to try harder it is relatable to a lot people. There is growth needed for sure.

I love pattern the most! His sense of humor lightens the mood in a book full of intense, broken, broody people. No mating, dividing by zero, I love having feet! I love his nerdy ‘dad joke’ humor. His kind of character interjects fun into a book genre full of scary world ending apocalypses.

I always hate Lirin, he is a self righteous fool, but i was fuming at the way he was being with Kaladin in this. I don't care if he is sometimes understanding or coming round to things or just trying to protect Kaladin. He is dead to me 😑😅

Adolin is just a little ray or sunshine who doesn't think too hard about things. How you get champion of Odium from that is just beyond me. Oh and I thought Dalinar was being as bad of a dad to Adolin as Lirin was being to Kaladin... Seriously guys, both of your sons are awesome, could you not??

I think the problem with Adolin's anger concerning his mother is that it's not something anyone can change. In the Way of Kings, Adolin was so confrontational because he was scared his father would lead their house to ruin. Here, the only thing in jeopardy is their relationship and I would assume he thinks shouting out accusations would just make everything worse.

When I thought Pattern was te spy I was so heartbroken.I felt as betrayed as Shallan! Also, I too was really mad a Lirin with all he said to Kaladin, especially in that situation and in the state he was in. I feel like he is very understanding and very patient with everybody except Kaladin. Like he can bend his expectations of almos everybody else, and that makes mad. All the Kaladin scenes I loved! Teft staying was the best thing ever. And I really love Adolin, but I agree it's troubling that he is okay with everything Shallan does. Also, I find hilarious that you want him to be Odium's champion so bad!
