What makes Shallan less likable than the rest of the main characters is due to her character choices. But, honestly, those choices paint her flaws and strengths in a way that is unique to the other characters. Her internal struggles with identity are seldom a theme people tend to like. It touches on many "cringey" things, but that's what makes her character much more organic. 3rd book rocked her character upside down but I know that means there's more for her to develop. Personally, she's the character I most relate to with Renarin a close second.
@tanisha5709

Shallan isn't my favorite either, a lot of her struggles are also relatable to me but in the context that I worked through those things years ago. That kind of makes her boring to me because I'm not getting anything new from her arc, and that's on top of not liking her personality. I can totally understand why a lot of people enjoy her though. I love Renarin too though and I want more of his perspective!

Agreed. At first I also disliked Adolin calling Kaladin "bridgeboy" but by the end of Oathbringer it turned into a nickname of sorts- a reluctant admission of Adolin that Kaladin is freakin' awesome and Adolin is actually second best in many respects. Apart from that Adolin is a good guy, no sign of him being a conceited princeling.

Technically he has several repeating trope characters like his love of making a bookish female character. I think it was war breaker, elantris, and Stormlight that he made characters all very similar. Don't quote me on that, it has been a while since I read them. That being said I still feel like the characters seem fresh to me each time, they are similar but unique.

Love Stormlight Archives because the characters feel like real people, with flaws like real people. I disagree with your assessment of Adolin. I can't say that he's my favourite character, but in terms of his privilege he's actually not too bad. I don't want to rant too long about this, so I'ma just say this; Adolin has had a very privileged upbringing, perhaps one of the most privileged of his generation, yet despite this he still acts primarily out of duty to his family and the people that he is responsible to protect, as the son of the Blackthorn. He is a good person at heart, and does not act out of greed or selfishness, but rather out of a desire to see the world become a better place. Yes, he is cocky and arrogant at times, but given his position and upbringing, it would be more shocking to me if a child who was raised from birth with the expectation of being an important person *wasn't* cocky and self-assured. I mean, he was a kid too, a kid who everyone showed respect to because his father was the mf Blackthorn, his uncle was the mf King, and storms help the man who upsets 5 year old Adolin. Given that, Adolin probably could've turned out much worse than he is, not that I think he's bad.
@DL-idk
@DL-idk 4 жыл бұрын
Can't agree more. He probably has never seen things from the lower class prospective and I can't blame him for being ignorant, because who isn't? Everyone could be ignorant and locked down in their own prospectives-Kaladin had been stuck in that lighteye resenting mode for so long and I won't say it's any better than Adolin's arrogant (hatred could be very dangerous, no matter how much it is justified). It's not Adolin's fault that he's so privileged and not his fault either that many others are not. Just like it's not Kaladin's fault that his eyes are dark.

I seriously feel Oathbringer should have been longer because there were many interactions between characters and smaller events that were brushed off to focus on more plot important events. I'll give some examples so spoiler warning. Like Jasnah's arrival felt a little underwhelming, she was just there and started doing things, nothing significant between her and Kaladin, considering the number of radiants it's not unreasonable to expect a little bit more interaction. Even after so many parties coming together in Urithru everyone mostly stayed in their own circle and split off in different directions. Also after the final battle a lot of things happened quickly in background like Szeth joining them etc, I wanted that more fleshed out. I read it at release so it's been some time, there were a couple other things i forgot.

Lift is a chaotic neutral character and feels like archetype you might more often find in manga and anime. I think viewing it through that prism helps you understand her as a character more and why she behaves the way that she does. Also, reading Edgedancer makes her personality make a lot more sense. Also, pancakes aren't specifically what you might think. There are pancakes all around our world and they are very different than the sugar-filled American breakfast food. So maybe that'll help you make sense of her pancake love. Especially since she's a character who literally gets her power from food. In short: I think lift is great. But I definitely get why others don't like her. Chaotic neutral characters aren't normal in most fiction. It makes us uncomfortable because we can't pin them down.

After learning of Lift's visit with the Nightwatcher, I think she instantly became more compelling. She asked not to change, and I think her curse is remaining a child, in a child-like state, forever. Her boon is to have the ability to change everything around her with her abilities, but she remains the same. I don't think we ever really know how old she is (or how long she's been alive rather) and I wouldn't be surprised to find out she's been around well beyond what her physical appearance implies.

I find your hate of Adolin hilarious (in the way you reacted), not cos it's unfounded! I just found, on rereading Way of Kings in the past week, that I now adore Adolin. You can see his growth is gradual, that the prejudices he's grown up with are part of who he is but he's slowly logic-ing his way into being a better person. "What is life, what is magic, I like to draw" is the PERFECT, most hilarious way to describe Shallan. I almost spat my tea. Yes! Her book should've been called 'edgy dancer'. I was honestly really disappointed, to me she comes across as one of these D&D characters that break the immersion because the player behind her wants to draw all this attention with "haha, am I not funny?", "this campaign is boooring!" and "do we have snacks left?" while having the sickest luck with dice ("oh look, natural 20 again!"), resulting in the player never having to make the difficult decisions the campaign is supposed to force you in. Or that poker player that plays for the first time, goes all in with 2 and 5 because you go easy and play without actual stakes only to say "oh well, I guess I've lost" at the end before players point out that she has actually won because she has a straight.

I feel that comment about Sanderson's writing being boring and chaotic at the same time. His writing is straightforward and I'd even say lacklustre in its prosaic style, but its also chaotic in that he will often add in a couple sentences describing something that is not the focus of the paragraph its in. He does it often enough that it feel like he's really jumping around, adding in tiny bits of world building at seemingly random places, and it can seem very chaotic to me. I'd rather a full paragraph or two describing/world building, then move on.

If you couple the fact that Lift is street urchin and by circumstance would often find herself hungry, and the fact that she is unique in her ability to metabolize food into Stormlight, making herself even more hungry by becoming awesome, you might be a little more accepting of her food infatuation. Her insulting oath is to call someone starvin' because that is one of the worst thing she knows. She takes food to survive and has has made it a game or challenge to take food from those in better circumstances, kings at the top of the list.

I think Shallan's decisions in Words of Radiance can sometimes be frustrating as a reader, because we can see things from a different angle. In skirting the answer he has shared the story of one of his friends telling about how on his mind Thom (a Wheel of Time character) doesn't have a mustache even though he is often describes as blowing air out through his mustache. My biggest thing about Adolin was he had no character development as the series went on. In the early books although he's thoughts and character was formed by the society, you can see that without the discipline of the father to act responsibly at all time and the influence of his mother to add levity and compassion, he could have been quite monstrous as the High Prince's heir and King's nephew. I love that Sanderson was not PC and didn't shy away from the power dynamics of a warrior society with noblity, soliders, servants and slaves. If this was grimdark you know what the highborn/lighteyes would be doing with impunity...

I read warbreaker and it was fine... Should I read mistborn now or stormlight archive....I have ordered way of kings and words of radiance... So can I start stormlight without reading mistborn...??? I want to start stormlight first because I guess mistborn can be underwhelming, unless u tell me I absolutely can't.
@daniel.tufeanu
@daniel.tufeanu 4 жыл бұрын
You can start with Stormlight, people generally recommend Mistborn because it's shorter and easier to digest, as in the Way of Kings the beginning can be a little slow and confusing, so it's best to already have some trust in Brandon, as all the threads connect and pieces fall together progressively
@sixseasonsandamoviee
@sixseasonsandamoviee 4 жыл бұрын
you dont need to read mistborn before stormlight but in my opinion, reading mistborn makes you trust the author more. that is important because stormlight is slower and has a higher learning curve. plus they are 1000 pages long books so you have to approach them with a different midset or you end up feeling thye are too long or they have unnecessary details. reading mistborn makes you trust Brandon enough that the pay off of reading those behemoth books would be well rewarded. Just my opinion.
@tanyam928
@tanyam928 4 жыл бұрын
Stormlight would be better to read after Warbreaker. Some characters from WB show up later in SL even though they are on different worlds. Mistborn won't connect much at all. I liked it but it is separate from SL for now, once each story progresses further than he will connect them. There are a few things that would make more sense, like if you know the magic from MB then you would pick up on one easter egg where a character uses the magic to manipulate another character's emotions. And if you know characters really well from MB then you will recognize a few very minor characters that show up from it. But those things are very minor. The connections with Warbreaker are bigger, but they won't show up until Words of Radiance and Oathbringer.

@@tanyam928 Wait, I totally missed those MB Easter eggs! Can you put up a spoiler warning and point them out to me?
@tanyam928
@tanyam928 4 жыл бұрын
@Hunter McDonnell If you really want to find Easter eggs and all the connections, I would recommend reading Secret History and also looking up the 17th Shard website. They have a forums section where people post and discuss theories or any cosmere topic, which will be very active when the new book comes out. They also have the Coppermind which you can look up any Brandon character, world, book, etc and see all info about them compiled. And another good resource on there is under Arcanum which contains the interviews and posts that Brandon has made about his works, called Words of Brandon (WOBs). The 17th Shard also has a KZbin page where they have a podcast that is good to learn more. **Spoilers... So if you read Secret History then it shows how Hoid/Wit takes a bead and eats it at the Well of Ascension, that is what gives him full Allomancy. There is a scene where Wit is speaking to Shallan's father and puts something in his drink, its bits of metal that he burns and then uses emotional Allomancy. The characters Demoux and Felt are worldhoppers and show up on Roshar. In a letter written by Hoid he mentions Ati, which is the name of the man that took up the shard of Ruin (where the name of the metal atium comes from). In another letter he is writing to other Shards and one he is communicating with is Harmony/Sazed. Brandon has also said that there is a kandra worldhopper somewhere on Roshar and to look out for them. The metal that they use to block themselves from being found in Oathbringer is aluminum which is shown in MB to be inert if tried to burn in Allomancy. And the woman in the Ghostbloods that always wears a mask is a descendant of the people on the Southern continent from Mistborn Era 2. There are a lot of little things you can find the more you look that will have more meaning if you are more familiar with each world in the Cosmere.

Ok here we go - my tongue in cheek roasts: Shallan exists for Brandon to insert his worst puns into the books. (Well, and Hoid, but that's obvious ;P ) Starting another Sanderson series? Get ready for the fight scene that breaks down the magic system. (I swear this is why I can't get my wife past the first chapter of a Sanderson novel.)

I love Adolin, but I hate it when both Adolin and Shallan call Kaladin bridgeboy because it comes across as very elitist and classist
@OrionSeas
@OrionSeas 4 жыл бұрын
I think that's kind of the point, at least from the start. Adolin doesn't trust him and Shallan doesn't like him. Adolin sees him as impudent and disrespectful, so he intentionally chooses to talk down to him to show him what he thinks. And he's partly justified in this opinion: Kaladin *does* tend to defy command structure and has a prejudice against lighteyes that leads him to disrespect all of them. Shallan and he get off on the wrong foot, so to speak, and they have no reason to like each other until they begin to understand one another. Since she's betrothed to Adolin it makes sense that she joins him in calling him bridgeboy. I don't like it, because it's unkind and I want them to treat each other better, especially once they start to become friends. There's a point that I remember asking myself why they still call him that because it doesn't make sense to me anymore, but I think part of it is that not as much time has actually passed as it seems and it's still sort of a habit. Just because they're *good* people doesn't mean they're always *nice* people.

Here is my controversial / highly disputed opinion. But first SPOILERS!!!! Brandon's rewrite of the Kaladin, Szeth fight was a terrible idea, it doesn't fit were Kaladin was as a character, Killing to protect was still something that was OK in his mind at this point, it takes away from the sacrifice Rock made at the end of book 3, and it makes Kaladin way worse. In the first iteration Kaladin accidentally stabs Szeth because he was expecting him to parry, unfortunate but understandable in a fight for your life. In the rewrite Kaladin cuts off his hand making Szeth lose his ability to fly and rather than holding him and letting him down gently he drops him in a high storm hundreds of feet in the air to chase after a sword. The first one was accidental the second was prioritizing a weapon over life.

There are minor easter eggs that will be fun to find between the different series but none of them are so big that it means that you have to read them in any order. The different series take place on different planets in the "cosmere." The technical chronological order would be Elantris, Emperor's Soul, first Mistborn trilogy, Warbreaker, Shadows for Silence, Stormlight Archive, Wax and Wayne era Mistborn, and then Sixth of Dusk. Mistborn and Stormlight are the big series, the others are smaller, standalones. I would recommend Warbreaker and then Stormlight, but you can read them in any order really. Hope you like them too!

Honestly, I get the hate on Adolin because he seems privileged and a bit boring, but I know he understands how much effort it takes to be a highprince. Like when he was talking to Azure, he mentions how duty is serving the greater good rather than yourself. Additionally, he had worked hard to get where he is at... he has won his own shard plates in duels and has trained for years. He’s become the best in dueling and although this happened because of his privileges, it’s hard to deny it.

I feel like its obvious why you SHOULD like Kaladin. Its just the typical hero. With Adolin theres more nuance. Plus youre right, he does come from privilege but what I like is HOW he uses that privilege and is still a good guy. Lets be honest, we can actually learn and take things from Adolins story and use him as a model for ourselves. Especially in a time like now during Black Lives Matter and other scenarios. None of us will be in Kaladins position. Raised in a above average home to be a doctor but instead joining the army, where your family dies and you are saved by a magic fairy and have untold godly powers? Its a cool character and story. But Adolins is realistic. (well as much as you can in a fantasy story lol) I feel like he only treats Kaladin badly bc Kaladin is kinda a butt, AND he feels like he cant trust Kaladin because he thinks hes hiding something...which Kaladin is. lol so, I would take that argument to defend Adolin any day :)

The ending is just so utterly epic, basically all of part 5. My favorite stormlight books pre-RoW was exactly reverse to Eliot's. It went Oathbringer, WoR, WoK. Post RoW it's probably O, WoR, RoW, WoK. I don't dislike WoK by any means, but there was so much worldbuilding since it was a first book, and it felt a bit draggy to me.
