One of the most autonomous producers of our time, Nex Millen does not wait at red lights...he keeps strollin’. He’s been working with up and coming artists for over two decades and although he may not be a household name, he is definitely the one to call for that authentic, timeless Hip Hop sound.
As part of the Philly Hip Hop Movement of the late nineties, NX has crafted tracks for Deadly Snakes, Dave Ghetto and Feb Sweetenberg (Nuthouse), Planetary and Crypt the Warchild (Outerspace), Reef The Lost Cauze, Lawrence Arnell (Army of the Pharaohs), as well as Zilla Rocca (Career Crooks). These days, he still chooses to work wi​th​ independent labels like Culture Power 45, and emerging artists such as SIYAH, SpaceMan Jones, and Truth-I Manifest.
Currently based in Asheville, North Carolina, we caught up with NX during a recent visit to Brewerytown Beats for the “Reality of It” video shoot (a project he produced with rap artist D Prime). While wearing a blindfold, NX randomly picked up albums by The Trumbadors, Germain Nostalgia, and the Quincy Jones Roots Soundtrack.
Unfortunately, due to his tight schedule, he didn’t have time to flip the records on the spot, only to give them a listen. However, as promised, he took the records back to his lab and pumped out three tracks. “There is not a record Ican’t flip into something satisfying!” he says, and he most assuredly proved his point!
