There seems to be some confusion about the premise of this video. That's on me. Let me clarify. I recently found out Amazon keeps an updated best sellers list of just about every category of products they sell. As luck would have it, BBQ rubs are one of them. Here is that list... Top 5 BBQ SEASONINGS (Updated hourly): amzn.to/30eC4My Once I saw that list, I had an idea for a video. I thought it would be fun to buy whatever the top selling bbq rubs are and give them a shot and see which one I liked best. To clarify, this isn't MY list. They are simply the top 5 best selling bbq rubs on amazon that are appropriate to use on pork which was my meat of choice for this experiment (since that's what most of my experiments are about.) This was just a side-by-side comparison of the top selling rubs on Amazon from their list. The market has spoken (and because of this list, we know what the market likes), I thought it would be fun to compare them. That's as deep as it goes. Thanks for watching, guys. I'll try to be more clear in the future.

The BBQ Rub from killer hogs is the rub for BBQ not the “AP” rub. AP rub is just an “all purpose” salt pepper and garlic mixture. The BBQ Rub from killer hogs is the actual rub and it’s the best one I’ve ever used.
@BabyBackManiac5 жыл бұрын
*edited 9/14 to address more common confusion* OK. I'm started to understand why there was confusion. Here are some common themes I am hearing in comments. 1) “Why didn’t I use a different rub by Killer Hogs?” For the same reason I didn’t use a different rub by Special Ship or KosmoQ. The premise of this video was to compare the rubs in Amazon’s top 5 best selling barbecue rubs list which is here (updated hourly):amzn.to/30eC4MyThat list is what I worked off of. There are a lot of great rubs I could have included had I just been looking for the 5 best rubs I could find, but again, that was not the point. The point was to used the ones on the Amazon best seller barbecue list. Amazon is such a huge retailer that best selling on Amazon may very well translate to some of the best selling in the world so I thought it would be interesting to see if they were any good. 2)Some of you have questioned whether the KH AP rub was intended for pork. Pork is actually the first protein suggested on the bottle. 3)Some of you have also questioned whether KH AP rub was meant to be a stand alone rub. Again, the directions clearly state it is designed to stand alone but you can also combine it with others if you want. So It’s designed to be used either way. I personally (like many of you) think it’s optimally used combined with other flavors… ...which is exactly what I said and did in this video so I don’t really understand the confusion on this one. My guess is you guys are commenting before the video is over. Either way, thank you for leaving the comment because it helped me understand the confusion. I'll try to do a better job of explaining these things in the future.
@Homecooking-lq6yv5 жыл бұрын
Baby Back Maniac Yeah I get that, my only thing is I don’t consider the “AP” seasoning a rub like the other ones it was up against. But I was just pointing out that it’s not that brands actually rub but as you stated I’m sure you realize that. Thanks for the video.
@Aristogrub5 жыл бұрын
I was just about to leave this same comment, so now I won’t! Instead I’ll just say that I now buy Killer Hog’s “The BBQ Rub” by the five pound bag because we like it on almost everything we smoke. Great vid as always. Scott

Like so many have said, AP is All Purpose SPG rub. You finally got there with the approach to base later. Malcolm knows his stuff and if you spend some time watching his videos you would see he uses the AP as a base and then covers with his BBQ rub which is an awesome rub. I use it all the time and works great on ribs. Kosmo’s honey rub is another if you like the sweeter flavor and combine with his Hot for a little sweet heat.

Nice video Justin, great comparison video..... I have been wanting to try the whole line of Special Sh*t rubs, that Killer Hogz AP rub is a little salty by it self, I use it as an under base and add a sweet rub on top. Great video again, I need to get back to doing videos myself now that my arm has healed from shoulder surgery.

Really like these comparison videos. I use the AP as a base rub or binder rub. Put it on, let the ribs sweat and then add the next layers. Great for what it is. I have used that cinnamon danish rub as a finishing rub on apple flavored ribs, worked great for that. Usually use it on my breakfast bagels though, LOL. I tried similar experiment, Byrons just made everything taste like polish sausage. I found Kosmos Honey Killer Bee was the best for store bought rub as it has a lil sweetness. FYI for jerk rub/paste try Eaton's (available on Amazon). It is way better then Walker's Wood, has more well rounded flavor, tastes fresher, and has a bit more sweetness (while still being spicy). Walker's wood is what is sold to American's as it is more commercial...Eaton's is what us Jamaicans use (when making from scratch; I use the Eaton's Hot actually). Also, try using the jerk and after marinating put on a rub (brown sugar, smoked paprika, and some SPG) before the cook. It will add a bit more BBQ depth to all that jerk flavor and help create a better bark. Then, glaze with bbq sauce spiked with pepper jelly and/or mango or pineapple juice.

AP Rub is about 65% of different salts. Rest of it is pepper, garlic, spices & just a touch of sugar i think... Use it as stand alone rub for a meat? No. Use it as baselayer instead of salt? Yes. Everytime i do bbq i use it as baselayer for my pork, poultry, beef, veggies, hell even for a fish. At this moment i have an opened jar of it and five on my spice cabinet waiting for use. Well i also have Killer Hogs Steak and TX rubs couple jars in there waiting. Everything Malcolm makes is good.

Would be nice to see the best for grilling chicken. I know that a lot of people complain about Bad Byron's for being too salty but I like that it can go to 400 and not burn.It is also affordable at $16 for 26 ounces. This as compared to $26 for 12 ounces for The BBQ Rub from Killer Hogs on Amazon. It drops to .69 cents a pound if you spent $56 for 5 pounds on Amazon. I would love to try The BBQ Rub but not at this price.
