How wonderful! What a superb example of repurposing and reusing existing building and materials and done without adding some brutalist facade which detracts from the historic building 👏🏻

A sympathetic balance of heritage and practical living. Amazing Effort!

I love the vertical, tilting louvres on the outside and the pierced stair risers - hate those open threads and always imagine that my foot will go right through the void. The blue brick is beautiful.

I wish more houses had horses. The sound of hay munching is very relaxing.

OK, so I've watched all six videos. Of the six houses shortlisted, two were designed by the architect for the architect. Given the age of the designers of the Peckham House I suspect that they had family help to carry out the work. Another two houses were commissioned by wealthy families using their kids as the designers - a total unrealistic example of how house design works in reality (for them there were no commercial pressures, no time pressures). The Hall seems to be a genuine commercial relationship between architect and client but given the length of the construction programme - 5 years - and the size of the house / extent of the work I would estimate it cost well over £5m. So that just leaves the Farmworker's House which appears to be a normal client / Architect appointment and with a budget that doesn't run into the many millions. So it should win.

Indeed, mostly vanity projects, however it does highlight just how risk averse present day developers are, ( or how conservative, we as buyers, are)

@andyphillips7435 or possibly just commercial - for a few of theses projects the payback will only come from.the value of living in a house tailored to their demands, not from the price when eventually sold.

And is good design only feasible for the wealthy with land and property that have been owned for generations?

@elinoreastwood3062 Largely, yes, unfortunately.

Interesting awards. I’d love to see something like this, but where the candidates were affordable for the average person. Maybe there wouldn’t be enough candidates to create a shortlist

It saddens me that most people here in the US, haven't the vision or desire to preserve our built heritage, the way that Britain and so many other countries succeed in conserving and preserving.

easything to say, but our old houses are more often rotted wood rather than brick or stone my friends life is ruined financially, stuck in an old fixer upper out of money to fix it

@MisterHolaMan I'm in the same situation. My 1861 woodframe cottage was derelict, when I purchased it ten years ago. I've spent a lot to save it, and still have a lot more to go, but no regrets. I wouldn't have it any other way.

There are certainly lots of requirements to preserve the old buildings here in UK - but I just put a very questionable modern extension onto an ancient stone cottage here in England (regret how it looks compared to all these beautiful restorations!) they’re not all preserved in good taste here that’s for sure!

nobody needs a bedroom of that magnitude , highlighting such only goes to show 'how out of touch one is'. I propose an online campaign to hand the house over to economic migrants whilst the current inhabitants can rent a two bed in Brixton and shop at Lidl ! #therealworld
