Eric Bischoff is who ruined the 98 WCW match between Flair and Hart according to Ric. Bischoff pretty much wanted it to be a squash win for Bret Hart in less than 8 minutes. Which was one of the reasons why Flair stated that Eric Bischoff was more toxic to his career than Jim Heard.

November 13, 1991 in New Haven, CT was the first time these two ever wrestled and I was on the 7th row. I was 12 and even my Dad, who is not a wrestling fan, was entertained by the match and thought it was by far the best of the night. It is a blessing Ric has this channel, love the stories.

Huge respect to Ric for commenting on this. Bret was pissed that he couldn't do a match beyond the scope of his formula (as he wrote in his book) and felt like he was sandbagging or sticking to a rigid routine. To know that Ric was hurting opens everything up. This guy is the GOAT in the eyes of millions and dozens of wrestlers and his stamina is legendary. It's a shame he wasn't 100% for those matches. Hart vs Flair was still amazing (because both guys are phenomenal) but it could've been more. Bret is easily the GOAT in my eyes but things make a lot more sense after hearing Ric give his side. Dude is a legend.

@Rodney Depp, @ the time, even with those matches, I didn’t consider Hart a top guy, tho. Good mid-carder @ best. He was below average on the mic, but made up for his lack of yap with his superior skills in the ring. I grew up about 2 hours northeast of Saskatoon, read about the title change in the Star Phoenix the next day. I hadn't even known they were in town. I doubt my parents would have taken me or let my older brother take me to see it considering it was a school night (not to mention Thanksgiving, though we'd probably celebrated that the night before), but I've been kicking myself for 30 years that it happened so close to home and I wasn't there. I was a teenager and smart enough to know what wrestling really was, so even if I'd known they were in Saskatoon that night I'd never have thought in a million years they'd do a title change at a house show in dinky little Saskatoon of all places. Anyway, I've thought about this a lot.

I just watched that match. It was fabulous. It was so great to see Flair wrestling another technician. The matches where Ric goes against muscle-heads like Sting, Luger, Hogan, Magnum T.A., etc. got a bit stale for me. Flair & Hart exchanging holds & reversals was really fantastic. Also amazing to see a clean finish. One of Flair's best matches in my opinion. Bret brings out the best in opponents... especially incredible considering Flair wasn't even healthy.

Unfortunately, it was for the worst. That's when everyone found out that Eric was sponging ideas off of people like Greg Gagne and others. Unfortunately, it was already too late. Bischoff was in total control and those three were not there to be a part of creative anymore and bail him out of trouble when the Hulkamania/Macho Madness train derailed in 95.
