Originally seen as Portugal's prodigal son alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, Ricardo Quaresma was expected to rise to the peak of the footballing mountain and achieve Ballon D'Ors, Champions Leagues et al. Moreso than his jaw-dropping skills, and tremendous goals, he is sadly known to be one of the ultimate "wonderkid flops", clashing with managers, playing with selfishness, and failing to keep a lid on his wild temperament.

I'll say this till I'm dead and gone: Quaresma's first 4 year stint at FC Porto were Ballon D'Or level. The Dragon Stadium was always packed because every 'portista' wanted to see his magic on the pitch, thanks to Jesualdo Ferreira, the only manager who understood his psychological issues. Those were the days.
@asnark7115

I never thought so. There was something in his game that set his limit: All he had were dribbling feint tricks and ONLY to one side. If a player who looked as good as Qaresma did in Portugal on a team with other players so good there's no double-marking any of them steps up to a larger league, with a one-sided, one-trick limit, no defense, he won't start for a big club. Contrast him with CR7: CR7 could dribble at any speed with either side of either foot and give nothing away. He could do tricks and feints for the camera- like his stepover tap dances- but he could also shove past or jet around defenders without wasting time doing ball tricks. Now that I think about it, even CR7's best "trick" was basically a symmetry and aerobics drill.

Yup. Anyone objective watching this guy on the ball would put him STRAIGHT into the top five most skillful players EVER. It's actually scary seeing him dribble at a level the very best skilled ATGs would be impressed by! Sadly, an upbinging that likely fostered a sociopathic mentality puts him amongst those players that could and should have been worldwide legends, but doesn't allow them to flourish. Basically, he needed a manager who would fully recognise his genius and build a team around him (the gamble being his mentality would diminish with the responsibility). Without this, he was always going to clash with any controlling -style manager. Would have loved for him to to have nicknamed 'Charisma' ; )

@@user-tm6rp4uj5vHazard were nothing like Quaresma tho? Hazard didn’t do unnecessary tricks and was overall a much much better footballer. He wasn’t great in working defensively but he tried at least under mou. He was just so good that it was a necessary sacrifice for the greater good that he didn’t need to defend as much. That’s why Willian got to work tirelessly and Azpi wasn’t allowed to go up in the pitch when he was a LB. Hazard took chelsea to 2 league titles,2 Europa league titles, 1 FA cup title, 1 Carabao cup titles. All while also being voted POTY in the prem 14/15 & should’ve won it in 16/17 & 18/19 if it was fair. Quaresma didn’t have that impact in an elite club & that’s why managers didn’t accept his shenanigans

If your countryman signs you to play in another country, it's a sign that he has plans for you. It's clear that two personalities clashed. Quaresma has a temper and an ego. I would see him sitting on the Inter bench with headphones and not even dressed to play. I didn't really like him for the national side that much, either. I always thought players like him and Nani always held the ball a little longer than they should have. But he got his during Euro 2016, I think helping Portugal win that shines a light on his confusing career.

Technique: Maradona + Ronaldinho = Quaresma. 🔥🔥🔥
@asnark7115
@asnark7115 Жыл бұрын
Only somebody who never saw Dinho or Maradona play would ever say something that incredibly stupid. Qaresma was a bang-average international level player. Canada, the US and Mexico have each produced better wings than Qaresma. Mexico has had 2 or 3. And Maradona's best "techniques" were not directly related to the ball. He could read and position himself in a 1/2 touch passing field better than any flashy player in history not named Messi or Pele, and MAradona also had serious quickness stepping out from a standstill with or without the ball. Qaresma has neither of those, he just took off running fast and hoped things worked out; that defenders would only challenge him from the same side, all the time.

Joao Felix today is a much better comparison who like Quaresma at this stage of his career has only shone in the Liga Portugal and since moving from Benfica to Atletico Madrid and failed 6 month loan move at Chelsea last season seems to also have a really poor work ethic and a big ego for somebody that hasn't really achieved anything yet. Now could be on his 3rd big club if Barcelona manage to capture him on loan before the deadline.

I am a big Quaresma fan, but in an era of stats and # impacts per game, these flicks are great highlight reels but ultimately the reason why he never was able to cement his place in one of the top European teams that could aspire to win a UCL is because he would clash with managers about his approach to the game. Comparing him to the era of CR7, Messi, Deco, Ibrahimovic, Iniesta, Xavi and other greats was that although from a technical ability standpoint he was probably the best from a productivity POV he was well below his peers. From a technical standpoint and mindset he is comparable to Ronaldinho and Neymar. You normally have three ways of overcoming a defender: 1. pass the ball to a team mate and do the famous 1 2 passing drill, i.e. you overcome the defender as a team (this was Barcelona tiki-taka mantra) (low risk approach) 2. Avoid the player by running laterally or diagonally, drifting one or more defenders, i.e. creating space elsewhere (medium risk) 3. Drible the defender, i.e. go into close-quarters and just overcome that defender either by speed/acceleration or using a drible. (high risk) Option 3. is a high risk approach and may not the most productive option. It is high risk because 1-on-1 against a defender it is all about a probability, you are not going to win all exchanges and you may lose possession that took your team mates time to recover. And sometimes it may not be the best option, especially when you are in transition (defense-offense) and the best option is to be direct: minimal touches and long passes for a running team mate. Neymar falls in the same category as Quaresma. Phenomenal player and an ability to embarrass anyone on the pitch, but lacked productivity. The only player that is the exception and I rate as the best player I have ever seen in anyone's peak is Ronaldinho, where he had that same virtuosity but was way more productive, i.e, scored a lot more goals, the number of impacts per game was quite high and he was essential for PSG, Barcelona and Brazil wins. Having said that, football is not all about winning and embracing a Messi or CR7 mindset and these moments should also be appreciated, because once these players hang their boots we will be coming here for these highlight reels. I had great times watching Quaresma play for Portugal and FC Porto, but a few times... I wish he would just play it simple and pass the ball quicker. Phenomenal player! One of my favourites!

he... dint fell short, he just matured later, but still did it ! there's a reason why he was the 5 striker in poland game. Cr7 felt secure whit him has last shot. it's a sporting thing year's ago, knowing farwell quaresma was way better then what happend.

He should have went to a team in England that gave him freedom.. look at okocha at Bolton .. Henry who flopped at juventus looked terrible went to arsenal and became a legend.. if he went to a mid table team and was given the freedom he had the talent to make it in the prem.. just needed the right team and Jose mourinho Chelsea wasn't it okocha wouldn't have gotten a game at Chelsea.. but he tore teams apart in the EPL no doubt the guy was a talented player when in the right team with the right manager.. look at Barcelona riquelme prosineski hagi zlatan all world class but didn't make it at Barcelona.. even maradona didn't enjoy his time at Barcelona.. but he was definitely a talented player look what he done at Napoli against team's like AC Milan juventus Lazio inter Milan sampdoria Roma .. all the best players were in Italy from van basten Rudd guilt.. to zico platini baggio at Florentine.. but maradona was the best player in the league and won Napoli the league and the uafa cup. Some players just need the right team and freedom to play.. look at the difference when Villarreal made riquelme there number 10 and built the team around him they got into the champions League.. compared to Barcelona playing him as a winger .. and the opposite kluivert going from Ajax champions League winner to AC Milan and playing badly to then going to Barcelona and finding his form again.. berkamp in Italy didn't work out but at arsenal.. the guy looked world class and also scored some breath taking goals for Holland especially the one against Argentina.. and his goal for arsenal Vs juventus was pure genius

I grew up idolizing this man more so then neymar messi ronaldo, anyone. Yeah okay sure he didn't reach the heights he should have but the pure flair this guy had inspired me as a winger. I learned how to do the outside of the boot because of him. I tried to do everything I saw him do on the pitch. I even followed him on twitter before he got verified and I wasn't even sure if it was really his account then he followed me back a few years later!! So sick. Imagine your idol randomly following you on twitter.

Had Quaresma works hard and improve himself then no question he would be probably on the same level as Ronaldo and Messi. Good to see he redeemed himself though.

I am Benfica fan, but Quaresma, one of my favourite players of all time. Barcelona destroyed his carrear. If he had Fergusson in his life, he would be better than CR7 in my opinion.

Sporting had in the attack Ronaldo, Quaresma and Mário Jardel. Because Jardel's depression and drug addiction and how young Ronaldo and Quaresma were it didn't workout.

Guys who are talking about him becoming potentially better than Ronaldo are not taking into account Ronaldo's complete attacker abilities over the years. Ronaldo has the height and jump to score headers, making him a viable forward to score 40+ goals a season. I love Quaresma and his skills but he never scored more than 15 a season. Ronaldo also evolved into a poacher mentality rather than Quaresma's crossing/assist focus so it's not as easy to compare the two.

In Portugal, players like Ricardo Quaresma and Luis Figo were more providers than goalscorers, while wingers like Cristiano and Simao were more goalscorers than providers.
