In this video I go over 10 menu options found in Nikon cameras that not every one knows about. These are common settings that come up in conversations about Nikon cameras and not many people know they exist or are even an option!
1. Focus Point Wrap around
2. Power off Delay
3. Exposure Delay Mode
4. Shutter Speed & Aperture lock
5. Release Button to use Dial
6. Airplane mode
7. My Menu
8. Playback display options
9. The "?"
10. Information display
I talk about each of these camera settings and how they can be useful to real world photography.
If you haven't seen my Z autofocus video give that a watch here : • The Complete Autofocus...

note with the Z6 & Z7 the My Menu settings are not saved when you use Save Settings. Same with U1/2/3, they're not saved either. If enough people tell Nikon, maybe they will fix it.

Wow, after dozens of sessions with my settings, I learned 3(!) new things: Release button to use dial (very handy for using the front control dial), Info Display (night mode), and what Airplane mode really does (turns off WiFi & Bluetooth which, like you, I never use) for better battery life. Big thanks for this video!

Another tip related to the exposure delay mode, if you want to really make sure you shake the camera as less as possible then you can use the touch screen release mode to trigger the shutter with a very light tap on the touch screen. I feel this requires you to press down on the camera even less

Your AF explanations well received indeed (keep doing these, please), I have tried to construct a table, with the different parameters to adjust how AF works, and the effect in the cells between the parameters. This illustrates the scatteredness of these parameters in the UI. I started that with a decision graph, first, but the table is more simple and can be glanced over in the blink of an eye.

Wow, really cool infos! Thanks! Another great thing about exposure delay is that the setting is saved to customer user settings 1, 2, 3. I was a bit shocked that the "motoring modes" (don't know the real name in English, single frame, burst and self-timer) are not saved in the user settings. Exposure delay is a nice workaround.

Exposure Delay Mode useful as I’ve found the cable plug in to camera fiddly as its not obvious which way round it goes in I had put a small tippex mark on the side of the cable to denote that’s backward facing. Again, a good video explaining how to setup and use your camera. Thanks You do know you are a Nikon nerd when you already have changed all those settings. :-) Regarding nr. 5 - Release button to use dial. You don't have to hit the button the second time to accept the change. As soon as you have made the change via the dial, you can hit the shutter-button, and start shooting with the new setting. Making it much quicker to use. Also, you didn't mention the asterisk * symbol in the menu. If you in the Custom Setting Menu go into one of the submenus, A, B - G you will see a long list of options with names like example; c1, c2, c3 etc. If there is an * over the letter c, it means you have changed that setting to something else than the cameras standard setting. That is always nice to know.

VERY helpful vid. Thank you! I used my z7 on a commercial assignment yesterday. Nothing beats working with new equipment under pressure if you want to see how it performs. My #1 gripe was the z7 "turning off" constantly. The delay was driving me crazy. Now I understand how to correct this... and consequently I've just ordered another battery! Another help would be turning off image review right after a shot in the EVF. I began immediately tapping the shutter release to clear it because I needed to see the live action before me and keep shooting. I'm guessing there's an option to control that, just need to find it. Thanks very much, Ricci!

Got a Z7 love it but there are a few things I’d improve via firmware or in the next model, 1. Longer than 30 second exposures similar to how Fuji does it including displaying the time as it ticks down, I would be happy with say 3 minutes. 2. Focus stacking added to the i menu 3. Slightly better implementation of focus stacking where you could touch a few pre selected points to focus on and also AE bracket each step.

Great points! I'm strongly considering selling my Fuji kit for the Z7, since I frequently print large (24" x 36" and up), and while I get excellent, sharp results from my X-T3 system, I feel that I would see a nice improvement in sharpness and detail retention at these larger print sizes, with the Z7 and the stellar sharp Nikkor S lenses!

One feature I’d love to see implemented is automatic (or manual) screen rotation, as with a smartphone. When I mount a body to a copy stand and flip up the screen, the menu is upside down. It would seem a simple fix since the cameras already have virtual horizon. Thanks for the great videos…looking forward to those Z9 reviews in the future.

Thanks for the video! I never used a remote since they stopped to equip their cameras with infrared ... Hate cable releases. And now I will start to use exposure delay insted of self timer :) The only thing that annoys me a bit is that you can't assign a specified time (e.g. 1 second) to one button - you always have to rotate the wheel to select the time.

If you're shooting landscapes on a tripod, I highly recommend using Electronic Front Curtain Shutter mode. This will give you the most vibration-free image possible (as well as prolong the life of your shutter). It's good up to 1/2000s frame rate, so you can pretty much leave it in that mode full-time, or you can add it to a user-control preset.

I often used U-settings on my DSLRs but not on my Z6, mainly because all temporary changes are going back to saved settings as soon as the camera is turned off. On my D7x00-cameras temporary changes stayed there until I selected another mode. I found this very useful as a basic setting for different types of photos, U1 for indoor flash, U2 for outdoor photographing. I selected a U-mode, made some changes depending on the situation, and when I have finished my session (or screwed everything up :) I just dial on the mode switch and everything resets to saved settings. Do you ever use U-settings? What menu settings cannot be saved to Ux?

@@beardog6569 Shooting agility dogs, I see the speed to 1200 (or higher if there are a lot of Border Collies) and at least f/7. Then I let ISO float. That way I can freeze the action and with a deep enough depth of field to give me some buffer on the faster dogs. But between runs sometimes I'd accidently end up changing either one while moving around. So, yes, shooting manual is the way to go; and the way I go.

Very practical and welcome, these brief explanations. My general comment on written user guides and reference manuals is that they do not rise above the level of: a feature in a picture is labeled number x - legend: x is [name], text: the [name] thing is to adjust [name].

@@RicciTalks - between teachers, there is a discipline called didactic. It gives us models and jargon that facilitate to talk about the profession of teaching, and speed up learning it. We all know there are different learning types with either visual (a), auditory (b) or kinesthetic (c) learning preferences. It is funny to note how "visual" people are able to talk for hours about "visual" things that auditory people can listen to but cannot visualize. KZbin is full of it. More essential is another classification of learners. You are revealing here you are the "messing about" type (1) (experimentation or trial and error). Another category is the "thinker"(2) (building a cognitive model in the brain). You will also note that some learners are "bookworms" (3) and want to know the "definition" of everything - these write user guides and understand nothing (sick comment, sorry, but that's how those come across). Finally there is a group of "lazy bones" (4) who want a "shopping list" (tell me what I need) and "recipe" (tell me the steps how to do it) and don't dare to go deeper (no definitions, no experimentation, no thinking). My experience in teaching is that some learners move between these types, depending on the learning phase, subject and/or context. So your videos combine showing and explaining and touch on a, b, 4 and a bit of 2 - don't feel offended, you are doing well. (the feel/smell/touch people of c generally already know the limitations to them of video). Long story short, you can see why and where the market is, for F2F tutoring.

Thanks, I really enjoyed this video. I shoot sports with a D5 and D500 usually set Manual 1/1000 min, 2.8 with auto iso and was frustrated when shutter changed and I wasn't aware of it for several sequences. Apparently I changed the setting without knowing so I set up My Menu with shutter and Aperture lock, problem solved. I wonder if you might address an issue I'm noticing with my new Z6. During my first two portrait sessions with it , it would pop out of flash mode, the red flash icon lower right hand corner of lcd. I use godox AD200s with R2PRO II controller. Seems as every time I would show the shots to my subject on the LCD, it would revert to no flash. I would turn off the controller then back on, good to go. . New batteries, firm tightening on hot shoe didn't seem to help. worked just fine on my D810. anyhow love your channel and my new Z6, 24-70 f4 kit lens so sharp......

I Ricci, just in regards to you using exposure delay mode. I do exactly the same setup for my long exposures, but what I like to do is activate the touch shutter, so when it comes to stopping the exposure longer then 30 seconds, you only need to lightly touch the back screen and it stops the exposure. For me it is far less risky then trying to press in a physical shutter button.
@aussie8114
@aussie8114 4 жыл бұрын
On a long exposure the slight movement from a shutter press forms a very tiny percentage of the shot so it doesn’t effect the image at all, not unless you’re extremely clumsy. For the same reason mirror lock up has no noticeable advantage on a longer shutter speed shot. The speed range mirror up has benefits for depends on your focal length. But generally it’s about 1 second to 1/25, anything longer or shorter and mirror up has no visible benefits.
@dakotabrownphotography
@dakotabrownphotography 4 жыл бұрын
LAZY DOG it does depend on the subject that your shooting. If there is a bright light source in the scene then the small movement of the camera from pushing the shutter could have an impact. For example a star trail photo at a longer focal length, the bump could possibly make the end of the star trail slightly misaligned. I think that the fact that the touch shutter is a button on the screen already, there is no harm in completely eliminating the risk by enabling such a small thing. I still use exposure delay but it’s finishing the exposure is where the risk is

one question from this video, does the airplane mode disable the wr-r10 function for RADIO flash control and remote release?, or does this not occur, as they use the remote or 10-pin sockets?
@RicciTalks

Wr-r10 can still be used when in airplane mode. Airplane mode only refers to wifi and Bluetooth The wr-r10 only emits when being used so really you wouldn’t be using it on a plane so doesn’t need to be covered by the “airplane” mode protocol

Also be aware that if increasing the standby delay on the Z series cameras VR will be enabled on adapted F lenses until it goes into standby. I reduced the standby timer on my Z6 once I figured this out. Reduces battery life and likely not great for the VR system

#4 I have asked Nikon via regular channels to give me and my Z 7 an EV lock. I have to say that the requirement for "Manual" has become slightly less with "metering for the highlights", but I still have the requirement. Under an overcast sky, you can shoot panoramas on some Auto and your shots will stitch without any problem, metering for the highlights. When the sky/light varies between pictures, you need to go full Manual (including ISO and white-balance). In panos you have time to set manual properly, generally. The most important use case, for me, for locked EV, is event photography in mixed light environments where one picture has bright outside as background and another has not. Auto gives very different exposures. Here, I meter (measure light in the space) and set that exposure, to stick with it. All shots align relative to the people in them. Now allow me to a) have EV lock and b) adjust shutter/aperture with e.g. the lens's ring. In EV lock, the shutter/aperture combination is coupled inversely: if you change the exposure by 1 stop faster, the aperture opens up one stop at the same time. This gives constant exposure and allows you to take one shot with background blur and another one with everybody in the shot being sharp. Or adapt to motion. It also limits your adjustment to the aperture range of your lens, so if you need to go beyond that, you need to adjust ISO. I would want to see that and distance+DoF on a lens with display built in. Call it old Hasselblad-Zeiss-lens nostalgia (whatever), but it worked extremely well way back and still would today. I think that natural light, wedding and event photographers would all love it. By the way, the Nikon sphinx and oracle answered, thank you for the idea, we put it on our list, we are very busy and may have other priorities. A couple firmware updates later, I tend to think this means, go figure and don't call us, we call you.

thanks Ricci for the tips! I'm wondeing why not all the functions are allowed to set in the "i" menu. For inxtance, Enable/Disable grid, or the DOF preview for instance... i was not able to find them to add them to the "i" menu. If you know how, can you help me? thanks and cheers from Argentina.

Does the stabilisation turn of in the nikon z6 when on a tripod? Or can I use different custom modes? With my old dslr I could have custom settings for different types of photography (for the delay exposure with night photography). I hate to always turn the delay function on again, everytime the camera goes into standby-mode.
The TRUTH about shooting at ISO 100 that the PROS know.
