I'm learning that the rotary trumpet isn't really a matter of taste, preferance or looks (cause some are really pretty) but actually a different type of trumpet, meant for different uses. Similarly to the piccolo trumpet. And yes, I know there's a piccolo valve trumpet as well.

Here in Germany rotary trumpets are very common. Not in the lower price range for students, but when you grow your skills you would usually “upgrade” to a rotary. You hardly see anything different in the orchestras. But I believe that good quality piston trumpets should be regarded higher, I really love my Yamaha 6340. Rotary trumpets need a mouthpiece with a large backbore! JK Exclusive Classic is a lineup of sizes; I use a Yamaha 15E. Common Bach or Schilke mouthpieces do not give a nice sound on a rotary, at least in my experience.

Meanwhile I replaced my rotary trumpets with a CarolBrass 8060, which can produce a similar sound while maintaining the general advantages of the piston concept. It should be noticed that there are very few rotary trumpets with a reversed valve block, so that it is actually in the middle of the tubing and allows for a long leadpipe-like a piston trumpet. Unfortunately I haven’t had the chance to try one, yet.

Bought an inexpensive Thomann Rotary and the JK a 4D Mouthpiece truly made a huge difference over the standard MP i played with my Prized Kanstul 1001… A Shilke 20D2d.. actually like the sound better than my 1001…..

Being a massive nerd and hobbyist collector, I completely sympathize with how American Trumpet players are often reluctant to play rotaries. Dramatically different feel. The Perinet Trumpet has a very distinct feeling which requires a lot of dedication to master. Rotary Trumpet feels more similar to all of those other instruments that no one here plays or knows anything about. Small backbore or insufficient gap will result in a really bad day. I agree with the other commenter, Hauke, that the JK Exclusive Trumpet-Classic series is a really good choice. Big backbore, large throat, and a cup shape that feels almost like a square. The result is a big, orchestral sound. And if all else fails, you can just use that mouthpiece on your Perinet Trumpet, and hope that your mind-over-matter game is good enough to fool the audience. Probably is if you're good enough to get paid to play Trumpet. 👍

When you say it feels almost like a square, do you mean the rim shape? Or maybe a straight-sided cup with a flat bottom?
@Markworth

@@THall-vi8cp The latter. Even though it's not, it feels like the cup shape is flat sided with almost flat bottom. I'm not sure why/how, but it's not a bad thing.

Now that's very interesting. Most of the recommendations I've received here in the States have been to find a deeper V-shaped cup. Scott Laskey custom made one for Bud Herseth, and that design became the V3 cup, which could practically double as a funnel for changing motor oil. I have one, and it makes all of my instruments sound almost like a flügelhorn. Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. Now I have a better idea of what I should be looking for.

"American" trumpet? Most of the modern piston trumpets were modeled on the French Besson, with Mons. Perinet's valves.

Rotary trumpets are German concert trumpets. They are great in sound and are beautiful to listen to in churches
