Ric, this is one of your best posts. At 62 I can certainly relate. I did not put this message into practice until a couple of years ago wracked up my shoulder trying to lift like 32! Couldn't hardly even lift the arm to wash my hair for 6 months. You are right, make an effort within your means, and keep the diet in check is the best advice.

Thank you so much Ric for this video, I struggled with letting go for about 10 years. I'm 60 and trained all my life . Had a great career in powerlifting obtaining 3 national records in the Bp in 3 different wt. classes. Then I stated with a spine disease, I was able to switch to BB, simce I could use lighter weights. I had been big and cut for the last 12years. Then the progression of my spine disease when rampant . 8 months ago I had to stop lifting completely. Like right now. My T12 broke and pinned my spine 41degrees forward leaving me bent completely over and causing partial paralysis. Needless to say. My spine has been completely reconstructed. I'm recouping now.bout i've lost all of my muscle almost 50#. I'm not allowed to lift ever again, but I was able to research on guys like us and how we age and how we mentally handle getting SMALL. I'm very happy in my new body people don't even recognize me. God has blessed me with the season in my life for BB and powerlifting. Nothing lasts forever and I enjoyed every minute of it. Now I;m in a new season. I think it's called Golden Years. LOL Thanks Ric

Great video... 49 here. I still lift. Nothing like I could in my 30's. The recovery is much longer. You look in excellent shape. I changed over to the 15-20 rep semi heavy weights and I feel the burn much better. My joints don't hurt as much the next day. Thank you

Ric, Thankyou so much for these videos. I'm 29 so although not an oldie I'm truly grateful for you sharing your knowledge and stories of the industry with us. Ive learnt a lot and through the guidance you (and others) give, I've built a decent physique lifting weights, eating well and having a good night's sleep. People over complicate training. Get these 3 things right, have a positive mindset and put effort into your workouts and you can't fail.

I do see myself maturing mentally, though. I realize as I get older, I gain freedom from trying to be perfect. There is a great peace in that.

My opinion is that the accumulation of damage that people can cause to their joints over time or the mileage that they put on their joints has a major factor in how we age.If your joints remain healthy then you can keep doing a lot more as you get older. At 45 years old which is still relatively young, all my joints are still good. I have powerlifted in the past and still train heavy but I don't train heavy every workout or all year long. I vary my workouts through the year which for me has been the key to remaining injury free. One last point for my 2 cents worth is that I think for me because I have stayed around 165 lbs. by choice that it is easier to maintain the muscularity that I have had throughout my life and feel that it will be easier to maintain well into my older age. Your lighter body types that are muscular tend to do well in advanced age. Look at Sylvester Stallone who doesn't weigh very much, he has been able to maintain a lot of his physique despite almost being 70 years old. Same thing with Jean Claude VanDam who also doesn't weigh very much he still looks close to the same as he did in his younger years. So I think your weight that you maintain your physique at while younger has something to do with it. When you are around 240 lbs. ripped in your 20's and 30's it is not very likely that you will be able to be that same weight and size ripped close to 70 when you get older. But for the lighter guys it is possible. Good video and valid points. I think protecting your joints while young like you mention is the big key factor.

A fine, honest posting about an important topic for us body proud muscle heads. At least for the ones lucky enough to face old age. My antidote for a bruised ego as I confront ever diminishing returns for ever greater effort at 60? Well, I wisely invested for many years in gratitude. I am a Christian man and whenever I looked in the mirror and saw a sleek, fine tuned, muscular body, I trained myself, not to say ,"I'm awesome! Look what I did!" But rather I would say, "Look how lucky I am! See how blessed I have been!" I put a lot of hard work into my physique, but I always saw my body as a gift. I saw brutal but beautiful sets as a gift. I saw my health as a gift. I saw good food as a gift. Since it was never about how wonderful I was, my ego is safe. Best of all, I got to live for four decades, in the happiest place on earth, gratitude! And now that I have to give some of the gift back, I can happily remember. "The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away. Blessed be the name of the Lord." Friend, you have many fine reminders that you were given a gift that all men want, but few receive. So enjoy the gratitude. It makes us old men smile.

Truer words have never been spoken. I went a little too heavy, a little too often, and prided myself on never skipping workouts. Caught up to me in my late 40s, and now I am forced to train light, slow, controlled, with emphasis on contracting, positive, and the negative.

Well Ric that was a great mini seminar on the aging process. Very down -to -earth, factual and truthful. Wish there were more of the older bodybuilders who would speak up and let us know of their true experiences but I suppose their ego from their greater years gets in the way. Frank Zane and Dave Draper are two exceptions who keep us inspired, but are realistic about the age factor in their current writings. After a very hard working career, first as a Professional wrestler full time for 8 years then 28 years running a group of Health Clubs in the UK and retiring from that I have tried to continue with my first love to try and stay healthy and maintain a reasonably good shape I find that at 82 I feel great and enjoy the battle in the gym with the muscle aging process . You were right on target with your training advice and the importance of a good diet, I have found a big help is that I stayed away from any steroid etc.input when I was younger and I always take a sound balance of good quality food supplements including Protein powder and extra BCAA's along with a pretty clean diet. It would be great if you could get an Interview (unless you have already done one) with a former champion Chet Yorton who still looked great just a few years ago at an Iron Man -John Balik sponsored Muscle beach event. I think he still lives somewhere in your area . If you have any contact for Chet please pass on to me if possible, as I had some nice time with him when he came over to the UK for the Mr Universe. bob@sweeney29.freeserve.co.uk

russ carney jr Yeah, I would tend to agree that by the time 70 rolls around for those of us still fortunate enough to be still here and able to train, it’s pretty much over. There are a few exceptions though. Take Robby Robinson for instance. I don’t know anything about his private life but he seems to have stayed on a strict diet and workout routine for well over four decades now. Not sure what he may have sacrificed to maintain that but age is catching up with him big time now also.

Truth spoken here as far as my situation. Turning 60 this week. Had spine surgery four years ago and haven't been able to get back to training or golf, my two loves, since. Surgeons want me to have a fusion but I don't want to start on that road. I've found a physical therapist who specifically deals with sport and spine issues so I'm going to give him a try. Unfortunately he doesn't take my insurance so I'll give it a couple of months to see if I can make some progress. It can get quite depressing at times thinking about what I used to be able to do. My goal is to get back to the gym doing a three day a week full body routine, eliminating any exercises that will stress my lower lumbar spine. No squats, deadlifts, etc. And hopefully get back to the golf course. I've got one quarter of my life left and want to live it as much as possible.

Mr. Drasin; This is probably the most insightful video you have produced yet. Those of us in your age range (I'm 67) wrestle with this dilema every day we wrap our hands around a barbell and try to finish a workout. Where did my strength go? Where did my muscular size go? All the vitamins, liver capsules, creatine & protein doesn't seem to help. Very demoralizing. My thighs are swimming in my jeans where before I was complaining I couldn't find a pair to fit my thighs. Our Chicago barbell heroes of yesteryear, like Olympic lifters Clyde Emrich & Fred Lowe, power lifters like Bill Seno, bodybuilders like Bob Gajda are now nothing compared to what they were in their prime, breaks my heart. Then I look at myself and ask "what happened?" After a lifetime of training(I started at 13) it's really tough to accept what you covered in your video. Nevertheless, your video provided some of the best advice on the subject I've heard to date. Time to adjust training accordingly. Thanks, Al Jakich

These are wise words and I hope people will listen. I'm 59 and back in the day I would hike 2 miles returning from work and do a grueling split routine every week without ever taking any thing other than a protein drink and I'm talking before creatin supplements. Articles on steroids were interesting but I never in the least felt tempted. Still I got close to 17 inch arms. Over the years I've generally had physical jobs and as I grew older I enjoyed some jogging and have always been a huge walker. Today I do a part time loading dock job and manage some sets of push-ups ,sit ups and curls with a heavy wooden hutch. I have good lungs and I'm more interested in longevity with mobility as opposed to super strength even though my boss says I lift more on the job than would be expected of a young person. Still the bottom line is I literally laugh at myself when looking in the mirror compared to when I was 27 plus I groan when getting up in the morning. And that's okay. The lady's will just have to like me for my personality. Ha ha.

every cell in our whole bodies changes some with age no denying that, but young or old if you stop stimulating the muscle it's going to shrink down. So you have to stay with it and be consistent. With joint deterioration, old injuries etc you have to make the warm up really the most important part of training...take the muscle through it's range of motion with no weight on it, flex it, light weights before you even think of going heavy, do giant sets-- very good for the older bodybuilder because you keep a good overall pump while taking longer between sets. I'm 53 and have gained steadily through the years, but I know I have to put a lot of thought into it because the name of the game is to grow while avoiding injuries. And cut sugar out of your life, you'll get your healthy glow back.

Great vid, I love these kinda talks. Besides genetics and skin and body type I suspect some guys who never worked out majorly in the past and were big because of it can be ahead of the game if they start working out later in life. They will see more noticeable gains (obviously) rather than maintaining what once was, cause it was never there in the first place, the joints won't be as shot and the skin won't be previously stretched -if that makes sense.

I've noticed something about men who don't hurt when they are over 60 and those who do. The ones that hurt are ones who were tough on their bodies in their younger years. Either contact sports or a mechanic who worked on transmissions his whole life have aching bodies/joint... etc. Those who don't tend to have these problems were ... for the most part pencil pushers, salesman, officer workers... They weren't fat in youth... ate decent. They just never put much physical stress on thier bodies/joints.

Ric - your words are gold and I really appreciate what you are saying as I am an aging half assed bodybuilder/gymrat for life. I am 61 and am in decent shape for the shape I'm in. I read Vince Basiles comments and began to think that he didn't really know what he was talking about as trust me, I am very well acquainted with age related sarcopenia and its a real bitch. With further thought however I remembered Dr. Alan Mintz and Dr. Jeffery Life the poster boys for Cenegenics Antiaging Clinics. Although Mintz died of a what was likely a stroke at age 69 -both of these guys built crazy muscles very late in life- like in their 60's. Why do you suppose they were able to do this successfully at such an advanced age. I know they used steroids and HGH but then so do a lot of others. You yourself have stated that you have used them with somewhat equivocal results at your age.Are these guys just boatloading the doses and/or are they just genetic marvels? What gives Ric ?
